Kids’ College Celebrates 30 YearsWelcome! Kids’ College is celebrating its 30th year. Interesting, stimulating, & enjoyable learning experiences are provided for students in kindergarten-12th grade. Over 120 courses are offered in the areas of computers, language arts, math, science, the arts, special studies, sports, and dance.

Schedules and FeesAll classes are Monday-Thursday (with the exception of July 4th week). Kids’ College classes meet one hour per day with 15 minutes between classes. The cost is $70.00 per class. Students may register for as many as seven Kids’ College classes per session. Students may not have an open period between classes nor remain on campus during non-class time unless attended by a parent or guardian.

Classes are held from 7:30 AM-5:00 PM. There is a 30 minute lunch break between morning classes and afternoon classes.

Lunch schedule: Kindergarten-1st grade 11:00 AM – 11:30 AM2nd grade & up 12:00 PM – 12:30 PM

RegistrationSelect your courses according to the grade level that your child will be entering in the fall of 2019. Your child or children must be 5 years old by September 1, 2019. Please complete one Registration Form and Parental Acknowledgment and Consent Form per child. Registration starts as soon as the catalog is published. Registrations will not be accepted by email or fax under any circumstances.

There are two easy ways to register for the courses you select:

Mail-In: Simply complete the Registration Form/Acknowledgment Form and mail the forms at least seven days prior to your child’s start date. The mailing address is WCJC, Attn: Kids’ College, 5333 FM 1640, Richmond, TX 77469. Payment by check or credit card must accompany the registration. Make checks payable to: WCJC Kids’ College. All checks must include driver’s license number and date of birth of check signer. A parent will receive a confirmation phone call once their registration forms are processed. All mail-in registrations must be received by June 3, 2019.

Walk-In: You may register in person beginning May 13, 2019, at the WCJC Sugar Land Campus, 14004 University Blvd., Sugar Land, TX 77479.

Please Note: Walk-in registration at the WCJC Sugar Land Campus will end on Thursday, June 6, 2019. There will be no registration on Friday, June 7th. Once Kids’ College begins on Monday, June 10, 2019 registration can only be done in person at Sartartia Middle School on Mondays through Thursdays from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

Late Evening Registration: Held every Tuesday between May 14th and June 4th only.

PaymentsAccepted are cash, credit cards, money orders, & checks. All checks and money orders must include driver’s license number and date of birth of check signer. Beginning June 10th, all general registration will take place at the Kids’ College location at Sartartia Middle School.

First Day ProceduresStep 1: Report to the name badge tables to pick up your child’s name badge and dismissal identification sign or go directly to the gym if your child is registered for Morning Fun.Step 2: Before leaving the name badge table, assist staff in identifying student pick-up locations and have name badges marked accordingly. Check badges for scheduling errors. If an error is made, please take the badge to the registration office.Step 3: Escort your kindergarten and/or 1st grade student to the K-1 hallway. Do not leave your child without staff’s knowledge and supervision. If the student is in 2nd grade or above, please escort him/her to the cafeteria.

Early and Late Arrivals: No Early EntryPlease do not bring your children earlier than 10 minutes before their class starts. The building is open at 7:30 AM. No child is allowed in the building prior to 7:30 AM. Late children are to go directly to the registration office where staff will assist them in getting to the correct classroom. Pick your child up immediately after their last class is dismissed. If your child is attending Afternoon Fun he/she must be picked up no later than 5:00 PM.

SafetyMedical personnel will be on duty from 8:30 AM-4:00 PM (not during Afternoon Fun). Students remaining on campus between the morning and afternoon program (30 minute lunch break) will be supervised by Kids’ College personnel.

Health Concerns and Special NeedsChildren with special needs are required to furnish documentation of their disability. All medication that is brought to the medical personnel for distribution during Kids’ College must be accompanied by a signed doctor’s note.

Reasonable AccommodationsIt is the responsibility of the parent or guardian of the student who has special needs or requires reasonable accommodations to voluntarily and confidentially disclose information regarding those needs to the appropriate Kids’ College personnel. Food AllergiesPlease be aware that flour and peanuts may be a part of our food projects in some courses. If your child is allergic to these or any other ingredients, please request a Student Health Information Form from the Kids’ College office/registration staff and submit the completed form at the time of registration. Children who are allergic to these items may be better served by enrolling in other classes, as we cannot modify these classes in order to accommodate each child’s needs.

ConductBasic standards of good behavior are required at all times for all students. Students may be removed from a class for disruptive behavior or removed from the program for repeated disruptive behavior. No refunds are given in these situations. Shoes with wheels and hover boards are not allowed. You will receive a call requiring you to bring a safe pair of shoes if inappropriate shoes are worn at Kids’ College.

Equipment StorageAn equipment room is provided for students who bring guitars, sports equipment, etc. Students may check them in and out each day, or they may leave them overnight. Please label all equipment. Kids’ College is not responsible for lost or damaged equipment.

Lost and FoundKids’ College is not responsible for articles left behind. Lost articles, if found, are to be turned into the Kids’ College Registration office.

Parking, Drop-Off & Pick-UpK-1 students and their older siblings will use the front door entrance (blue parking), older students will use the red parking (side entrance).

Morning Fun drop off will be at the gym entrance. Do not drop off students earlier than 10 minutes prior to the class start time. Participants may park in any parking space that is not reserved. Please walk children to the designated areas before class; there are signs to follow. Pickup should be within 10 minutes of the child’s last class. Please see the Late Fee Schedule on page 2 for late fee charges. When picking up your child please use the sign with your child’s name and authorization identifier given to you by the Kids’ College staff. Place it on the dash board of your car when driving through to pick up your child or carry it in any time you enter the building. If you fail to present this identification, please report to the office to sign your child out. NO CHILD IS ALLOWED TO WALK OR RIDE A BIKE TO KIDS’ COLLEGE UNLESS ACCOMPANIED BY AN ADULT – NO EXCEPTIONS.

Kids’ College ConcessionsConcessions will be available during breaks as well as during the lunch period. All food and drinks are to be consumed in the commons area only.

Workshops must have a minimum of six students. You will be notified by telephone if a workshop is canceled for any reason.

Computer Gaming-Scratch: Grades 4 & UPStudents will create stories, games, and animations using Scratch. Students will learn concepts such as frame by frame animation as well as learn basic action script functions.

Graphics: Grades 4 & UPWant to learn computer graphics like the pros? Use Adobe Photoshop or Elements to create graphic files for print and online presentations. Special emphasis will be on digital photography and working with and managing digital files.

Web Design: Grades 4 & UPStudents will become familiar with the World Wide Web. They will know the difference between the internet and the web. Students will learn how to make websites and be able to present their projects in a knowledgeable manner.

Language ArtsADVENTURES IN READING Gr. K-1Learn to become a good reader while listening to award winning stories. Students practice listening comprehension skills using follow-up activities games, crafts, and songs. New books are used each session.AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE Gr. 3-5; 6 & upKids will learn basic vocabulary and everyday words in sign language by finger spelling and signing.COOKIN’ UP STORIES Gr. K-1; 2-4Experience a first-hand look at the life of animals. Students will learn about wild and domesticated animals.ELECTRICITY, IT’S A SNAP! Gr. 3-5Students will learn the fundamentals of electric circuits by using Snaptricity kits. These kits are specifically designed for young scientists because no soldering is required, parts just “snap” into place! WORKING WITH WOOD Gr. 2-3; 4-6; 7 & upLearn the techniques of working with wood using different adhesives, finishes, sandpaper, and nails. Students make age-appropriate projects. This class may get messy! A cover shirt or apron is required.

Special StudiesBABYSITTING Gr. 6 & upStudents are taught how to handle emergencies, entertain young children, prevent accidents, and apply simple first aid. A handy babysitting bag to take home is put together during this class.

BREAK-OUT EDU Gr. 3-5; 5-8Break-Out EDU is an escape game for the classroom that will put your problem solving skills, creativity, and teamwork to the test. Work with a group to solve the clues and “break out” before time is up!

CHESS Gr. K-1; 2-3; 4-5; 6 & upLearn basic strategies and enjoy healthy competition in this game. Students participate in a round-robin style tournament.

CRIMINAL JUSTICE Gr. 4 & upFrom learning traffic stop procedures to working a staged crime scene, students experience a packed two weeks in this course. Students are offered knowledge on police paraphernalia and proper use of force as they position themselves for a career in law enforcement.

DEBATE Gr. 5 & upStudents are taught how to communicate opinions in an organized manner. Students practice publically expressing a personal point of view and impromptu thinking and speaking skills.

EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION Gr. 3-4; 5 & upStudents study and practice the elements of communication while boosting self-confidence, learning how to communicate with others, and having fun at the same time.

EMBROIDERY Gr. 3-6Learn basic and advanced embroidery stitches. Students design their own needlework projects.

FIX-IT YOURSELF Gr. 4 & upThe nuts and bolts of simple home repair. Students learn how to change a bike tire as well as easy maintenance throughout the house such as faucet replacement, lamp rewiring, replacing locksets on doors, and ceiling fan assembly.

GOLD RUSH Gr. 2-4; 5-8Gold Rush digs into a variety of subjects such as, geology, geography, and math. Students will examine minerals, create maps, pan for gold, and use basic math to decipher codes that will lead to buried treasure. This class utilizes critical thinking, creative problem solving, and team building. If you enjoyed Archaeology & Dirt, then this is the class for you.

GREEK MYTHOLOGY Gr. 4-5; 6 & upStudents gain a better understanding of ancient Greece and Greek Mythology such as the culture, alphabet, and symbols through modern literature. Students participate in Olympic style games, costume creation, and shield making.

JUNIOR PARAMEDIC Gr. K-1; 2-4; 5-8Students learn basic first aid techniques, rescue breathing, how to handle emergency situations, and personal body protection. Students are exposed to paramedic tools of the trade.

JUNIOR POLICE & FIRE ACADEMIES Gr. K-1These real life super heroes have a long history of intriguing young children. Children learn valuable safety lessons like how to handle bullying, stranger dangers, and stop, drop & roll.

LAW & ORDER Gr. 6 & upThis course imparts an overview of the court system as well as police forensics. Students receive information to help differentiate areas of the law. Famous trials and unbelievable law suits are studied, as well as how and why verdict decisions are made. The 4th Amendment (search and seizure), plus legal terminology and symbols, are taught. This course ends with a mock trial.

LEADERSHIP SKILLS Gr. 4-5; 6 & upDevelop communication and relationship skills for effective leadership. This class discusses how to handle peer pressure, goal setting, making good decisions, and problem solving strategies.

MEMORY TRAINING Gr. 3-5; 6-8Students learn secrets to improve their memory. With a little practice, students find themselves retaining facts, figures, lists, formulas, poetry, and names like never before.

ORGANIZATIONAL SKILLS Gr. 2-3; 3-5; 6 & upThis course is designed to help increase the ability to produce results and gain success. From thinking and preparing to prioritizing and time management, students are taught the skills necessary to minimize the many difficulties of the adolescent years.

PSAT/SAT PREPARATION Gr. 7 & upGet a head start on the SAT! Students learn skills and strategies for taking the SAT while develop a study plan to help obtain a higher score on the PSAT/SAT tests.

SEWING 101 Gr. 4 & upStudents will learn basic sewing skills from proper use of sharp scissors to machine stitching as they complete a take-home project.

SIMPLY SWEET Gr. 5-8Dazzle family and friends with one-of-a-kind crafty kitchen creations. This hands-on class will teach students how to create hand-crafted, edible works of art that are “Simply Sweet”! Please review allergy statement on page 3.

SNACK ATTACK Gr. 3-5; 5-8After-school (or summer) snacks with a twist. Students use recipes to safely measure, mix, and create healthy snacks. There is a tasting party with each snack made. Please review allergy statement on page 3.

SPEECH Gr. 5 & upStudents study oratory, prose, poetic, extemporaneous, persuasive, and informative forms of speech. Students practice public speaking skills including proper expression and body gestures.

ZEN-DOODLING I Gr. 3-5; 5-8This introductory course is an easy-to-learn, fun, and relaxing way of creating beautiful artwork that requires no previous art training or expensive materials yet offers a pathway to creativity and mindfulness by drawing structure patterns inspired by Zentangle. Aimed at beginners, this class will cover a range of simple patterns taught one step at a time. At the end of the course, students will implement the beautiful images they created throughout the sessions into breath-taking projects to take home.ZEN-DOODLING II Gr. 3-5; 5-8Proven to reduce stress and enhance creativity in people of all ages, Zen-Doodling is considered “yoga for the brain!” This course is designed for the “intermediate” Zen-doodler who has had previous Zen-Doodling instruction. A wide range of intricate and challenging patterns will covered for doodlers to draw inspiration from as they tap into their inner artist! The course will conclude with a culmination project that will explore the many artistic possibilities afforded to those who enjoy this beautiful and calming art form!

BASKETBALL INTERMEDIATE (PM ONLY) Gr. 3-5Students learn the fundamentals of techniques used in dribbling, shooting, passing, and defense on the next level. Students will develop basic cheer techniques and learn cheers and chants that can be modified to motivate any sports teams. K-1Students build small motor skills by learning how to use the mouse and keyboard while playing educational games on the computer.COMPUTER KEYBOARDING Gr. 4-8Students learn the keyboard by touch and practice skills that develop or improve typing efficiency.DIGITAL STORYTELLING – MICROSOFT BASICS Gr. 6-8Students use Microsoft PowerPoint to illustrate character, setting, conflict, plot, and theme in original story presentations. Pickup should be within 10 minutes of the child’s last class. Visitation: Parent are allowed visitation by invitation only.Allergies and Medications: If you have a child with allergies and/or medication needs please contact Kids’ College at 281-239-1531 or email [email protected] at time of registration to complete a Student Health Information and/ or Authorization for Dispensing Medication Form.Behavior: Students are expected to be respectful and courteous to one another and KC staff at all times. Disruptive behavior such as hitting, biting, name-calling, running in the building, destruction of property, etc. will not be tolerated. These situations will be handled as follows: Incident 1 – warning and discussion with student, Incident 2 – discussion with parent, Incident 3 – student will be dismissed from the program. No refunds are given in these situations.Publicity Release: Permission is hereby granted to use my child’s photograph and statements for publicity by Wharton County Junior College in press release materials, publications, advertisements, and the college’s website.

+ If your child is attending Morning Fun they may not be dropped off before 7:30 AM.
