UPDATE

Year-to-date through April 30, 2014

COLUMBUS RESCUE MISSION WOMEN’S MINISTRY BRUNCH

The CRM Women’s Ministry Brunch held on April 26, 2014, was a huge success. Over 115 women attended and $3,700 was raised for the Women’s Ministry.

Trinity Lutheran Church Council met May 12, 2014. President Kendall Christensen called the meeting to order. Pastor White led the recharge.

Pastor White reported the Constitution and Bylaws Working Group held “Town Hall” meetings on April 24 and 27. There was open discussion and the group is still in the “receiving congregational input” stage. It has been determined that some of the proposed initial language may not be needed and that there is still work to do in redrafting some of the wording.

Pastor White and four members of the Chancel Design Team met with Sinclair Hille Architects, a church design firm from Lincoln. They will prepare a proposal for developing a chancel design and an artist rendition of the project. Pastor also spoke with Chris Chavanu Electric from Lincoln for a second opinion on the sound speakers for the Chancel.

Kathy Barcel presented the chosen Shaw brand carpet tile square sample that would be installed for the Fireside Room, Fellowship Hall and hallways. Cost of the carpet for those areas will be $33,000. The Endowment Board will be asked to help fund this project.

Pastor White reviewed the 400,000 Meals for the Heartland Project the LCMC will package during the National Gathering in Des Moines this October. We will ask the Congregation for a freewill offering to help with the cost of these meals.

The meeting closed with prayer. The next meeting will be Monday, June 9, 2014, at 7 p.m.

FIRESIDE FORUM SANCTITY OF LIFE This coming summer we are continuing with our combined Adult Classes beginning June 1. Our series entitled “Sanctity of

Life” and produced by the American Family Association is an in-depth study of life and health issues. Scientist, medical professionals and experts in their fields share with us both pros and cons on issues such as cloning, stem-cell research and abortion.

JOY CIRCLE Second Tuesday of the Month—2:30 p.m.

Joy Circle has been meeting on Tuesday evenings for many years, but now we are changing to Tuesday afternoons. We begin all meetings with coffee and dessert and then the Bible study, and we close all meetings with prayer and visiting.

Our project is the “Center For Survivors” as they are in need of a variety of items. At present we are using Rick Warren’s book “The Purpose Driven Life” as our Bible study.

We encourage any and all women of the church interested in an afternoon Bible Study to call or just drop in starting June 10. The Welcome Mat is out. Join us in the Fireside Room.

Hey, Everyone! My name is Billy Czapla and I help minister to the Trinity Junior High program with the rest of the team, including my wife Denise, and both Pastor White and Pastor Zurek running the Confirmation program. Denise and I have been fortunate to be working with the Wired 12:2 program for almost four years. Wow, how time has flown by! Since we see both seventh and eighth graders every year we try to change our curriculum every other year to develop individual and outward growth. This year we have been focused on outward growth which includes the students learning about the Gospel and being able to tell others about it. Without getting into a lot of details, our class has taken it to a new level this year; and the Trinity family should be very proud of all of them.

Part of their training this year was to go to Dare 2 Share in Lincoln. Trinity Wired 12:2 sent a group of 28 students and leaders in 2014. Students learned how to be open about their faith, build confidence on speaking about the Gospel graciously and how to live life in “Reverse” of how the world views we should live? It was outstanding and while we were there the students agreed to do an outreach in the local neighborhood. This is where the idea of the smoke detector battery idea came from; we called it “Power-up” where the battery speaks for itself. But an outreach like this also builds up the students’ confidence to talk about church, God and prayer to complete strangers.

On Saturday, May 3, 16 students along with leaders went around the Trinity neighborhood and offered free smoke detector batteries. All of the batteries were provided by the congregation, and we are grateful for your donations. While offering batteries students used the time to introduce themselves, Trinity, the Gospel and potential prayers that might be needed for the household. Overall it was a huge success; and because of that success, I asked each group to write down one specific testimony of the evening that stuck out to them (their exact words by the way). I hope you enjoy them as much as I did. Thank you for your continued support of our Junior High Ministry-Wired 12:2.

God Bless, Billy Czapla

GROUP 1—JORDAN, PAIGE, TATE, BOSTON

We were invited into her house after introducing ourselves. She brought her husband into the living room with us, and she was very open with us sharing God to her. We exchanged G.O.S.P.E.L. cards and the book. When we all started to pray we all gathered hands, and we prayed and thanked her for her time and continued on our outreach.

GROUP 2—SYDNEY, SARA MACKENZIE, JAZPER

Our most inspirational experience was with a lady named Dorothy. Right away she told us she attended a church right here in Columbus and that she was reading the Bible right when we came to the door. She shared her experiences about being a missionary with us. She told us about the time when she took a mission trip to the Dominican Republic and how she went door to door spreading God's word. When we asked for any prayer requests, she told us that she was having hip surgery this coming week. After we were done praying, she told us that right before we came in to her house she was praying to God the He would give her peace for the surgery. It was definitely God working through us to be the peace that Dorothy was asking for.

GROUP 3—HANNAH, LIAM, AIDEN, LYDIA

We met a lady named Sue. She had cancer but overcame it. We prayed for her health and to gain strength. We also changed her carbon monoxide batteries in her detectors for her.

GROUP 4—ALEX, ZACH, MAGGIE, JENNA

We met a younger woman with kids that did not need batteries from us; but when we asked her if she believed in God, she said “yes.” We asked if she went to church and she said she had not gone for a long time. Before we left we asked if there was anything that we could pray for? She did not understand at first what we meant; and after we explained it, she could not believe that we would be willing to do it, but her aunt Fran (whom she was very close to) was diagnosed with Alzheimer. So we prayed for the woman and her aunt Fran and the woman began to cry as we left the house.

REMEMBERING MY DAD by Pastor Zurek

Walter John Zurek was born November 29, 1915, in the south side of Chicago. His mother died while he was still an infant so he was raised by his Aunt Sophie. He grew up in Chicago during the time of gangsters like Al Capone and the era of Prohibition.

After high school, he enlisted in the United States Air Force as a private and served for 22 years retiring with the rank of Lt. Colonel. He served in both WWII and the Korean War.

In July of 1968, he suffered from a seizure and was diagnosed with a brain tumor. After three major surgeries and almost one full year of chemo, he died at the age of 54. This was the same year I graduated from college and prepared to attend Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota.

My dad was raised a Catholic; but when he met and married my mom, he took classes and became a Lutheran.

There are two things that I remember the most about my dad. First was that every Saturday morning my brother and I would climb into bed with him; and with the smell of pancakes and maple syrup in the air, he would tell us Tarzan stories which he made up on the spot. I think he would have made a great writer.

I also remember our traveling all over the world—Panama, Washington D.C., Alabama, the Philippines Islands, Kansas City, Colorado Springs and finally Thousand Oaks, California.

Wherever we went, there were two constants. One was our family. And despite my objections, my

parents insisted that my brother come along with us.

I also remember that wherever we went, there was always the church. It might have been on a military base, or it might have been in the community where we were living; but there was always the church, and we worshipped together as a family every Sunday. There are many things I wished I had told my dad before he died. But I believe that one day I will be able to have those talks with him. I am writing this as an encouragement, no, as a plea; if you still have your father, take the time now to have those talks and listen to his life story. And, if you have been blessed to have parents who have raised you in the Christian Faith then be sure to thank them and thank God for them.

I hope that you have a great Father’s Day and that you never take your father for granted. Even if he hasn’t been the best father, give him the honor he is due.

NOW ON KTLX WEEKDAYS AT 1:30 P.M. HERE’S WHAT LISTENERS ARE SAYING! “David is so passionate when he teaches; it is so powerful! Love it and will listen every day!! Choosing to be ‘Radical.’ What a difference he has made in my Christian walk. We love Moody Radio!! Thank you!!” – Teresa “In 2010, my wife and I read Radical and it changed our lives. It set us on a course towards missions, and today we are preparing to leave within the next few months as full-time missionaries to South Africa and work with the amaZioni. Please continue to have this programming as it is vital to changing the hearts of Americans that are lost in the American dream.” – Anonymous Listener “It has been refreshing to read some new books by David Platt on discipleship. He is on a very short list of those who rightly explain discipleship. Thank you for the new "Radical" program at Moody Radio. It's a great addition! Respectfully in Christ.” – Mike “I cannot get enough of the clear teaching I find with David Platt. Praise God for your ministry and the commitment you have. I have been a listener of Moody Radio for years, and I am excited that your program is here … God Bless!” – Angela

JUNE 2014 by Glenda Lundstrom

Summer Sundays 2014

It will be a weird summer here at Trinity. And I mean that in the very best way! As adults, the term “weird” is not common in our vocabulary. However, it works pretty well for kids when they communicate their feelings of being left out or different, when they don’t understand, when they do wrong or when they are afraid.

We will work with that this summer to help kids grow in their relationship with Jesus so they know they can always turn to Jesus who is ever-present and loves us no matter what.

Each week will include Praise & Worship with great kid-friendly music where kids can worship God with gusto! Untamed Games and KidVid Cinema will be other activities scattered throughout the summer. All of the activities are engaging as they focus on the Bible Point & verse of the week.

Bring your kids and their friends so they can step back in time to EXPERIENCE One-of-a-Kind Bible Adventures. Each week is a stand-alone session. Their friends are always welcome and will fit right in!

THERE IS NO FEE

Our Breakout Mission Team will be sharing Christ in Summer Sundays on June 8th as they engage kids in the Luke 17 Bible story of The Ten Left-Out Lepers. Bible Point: Even when you’re left out … Jesus loves you. Key Verse: “I am with you always … .” Matthew 28:20 Why it matters: Kids know the loneliness of being left out. Knowing the TRUTH of how Jesus loves them and is with them can make all the difference in how they cope and how they show Jesus’ love to others.
