“Future at home” is the motto used by Fraunhofer to signal the

transformation of everyday spaces into a networked world of

experiences. The “future parc” contains a house in which twelve

different Fraunhofer institutions are exhibiting unique solutions from

applied research for the working life and our living environment.

Green IT, for instance, supports intelligent energy management,

which helps reduce power consumption costs and protect the envi-

ronment. In such applications, mobile communication makes data

transfer much easier for users. Medical information such as vital

data can be transferred and controlled, too, from just about any-

where – whether you are monitoring the elderly while they sleep or

locating rescue workers as they combat natural disasters. Fraunhofer

researchers are changing the world of public administration as well:

as Europe grows ever closer, different national infrastructures need

to be integrated and electronic data accessed and utilized across

borders. Television, too, is set to change, and in our TV studio we

will be presenting different aspects of real-time image recording

using 3-D camera technology. Fraunhofer excellence can be found in

many of the products you use today, and at CeBIT you can discover

the products of the future that will feature Fraunhofer expertise.

Sincerely,

Hans-Jörg Bullinger

President of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft

At this year’s CeBIT we look forward to

welcoming you at the information desk in

our pedestrian zone. There, you will find

the right contacts to provide with all the

information you need.

If you would like to explore “Future at

home“ at your own pace, you can bor-

row an audio guide in return for a small

deposit. The audio guides are available in

English or German and provide informa-

tive recorded texts on selected exhibits

(for more information, see pp. 28 and 29).

You can then head off through the pe-

destrian zone. Instead of seeing inani-

mate posters, you will be addressed by

interactive infoscreens. These contain

cameras that detect the number and

gender of passers-by and their distance

from the screen. This data is processed

immediately and used to adapt the type

and content of the advertising displayed

PedestrIaN ZoNe

Billboard posters are now a thing of the past. Web 2.0 and

digital media are making advertising interactive, offering both

advertisers and the public customized multimedia advertising.

Fraunhofer IIS’ SHORETM is a tool that detects faces and facial

expressions, identifying the gender and age of any passer-by

and allowing information to be customized as it is displayed.

SHORETM is suitable for both quantitative and qualitative market

research; it adapts to test scenarios, evaluates data in real time

and documents the results.

The identification solutions that

Fraunhofer researchers have developed

together with partners from government

and industry point the way to the future

and are above all secure. The networked

community office highlights the potential

of the new ID card. It provides two-way

authentication for online transactions and

telephone calls. E-government solutions

show how companies can efficiently meet

their statutory registration requirements

in a trusted environment. Implementation

of the EU Services Directive requires the

establishment of a single point of contact

(SPOC) within each country’s national

authorities. Particularly in cross-border

use, electronic documents need to be

absolutely secure.

Up till now, it has not been possible to verify someone’s identity

on the telephone, but that will change with the new ID card.

The Fraunhofer SIT has developed a prototype that can be used

to check the identity of a person over the phone. The VoIP-

based procedure is suitable for VoIP applications in e-business

and e-government. The eID function of the new ID card means

the identity of the caller can be verified with absolute certainty.

With the aid of an RFID reader this function is also suitable for

use with a cell phone.

In preparation for the launch of the new ID card on November 1,

2010, the Fraunhofer FOKUS set up a test and demonstration

center on behalf of the German federal ministry of the interior

(BMI). At this center, the technical components such as the

ID card, the citizen client and the eID server are being put to the

test in a variety of scenarios and showcases. Sample applica-

tions for the new ID card are on display, such as automobile

registration transfers, car rentals, online banking, webshops and

administrative portals.

Together with security printing company Bundesdruckerei, the

Fraunhofer FOKUS will demonstrate how the new ID card can

be deployed in mobile environments. You can use it, for in-

stance, to download songs direct to your car radio. Simply select

the song you want and identify yourself to the provider with

your new ID card. The provider then identifies him or herself as

a bona fide vendor. After this identification process, the song is

released for download.

Nowadays, people have a variety of different identities. These

include, for example, a person’s name and address as they

appear in official documents, but also an individual’s private

or business e-mail address, their status as an employee, a

pseudonym in a chat room – even the anonymity of a Web

surfer. In their joint project European Citizen Card 2.0, the

Fraunhofer FOKUS and Sagem Orga demonstrate how innova-

tive approaches – such as using biometric features in place of a

six-digit PIN – can be put into practice. The Fraunhofer FOKUS

trative procedures with “federated processes”.

What use is life without health? Health is

key, whether in the stressful situations of

working life or during retirement. Ambi-

ent Assisted Living technologies create a

symbiotic intelligent environment that,

for instance, monitors the sleeping posi-

tion of the elderly and ensures they have

no trouble going to bed or getting up.

Sensors integrated either in our clothing

or our surroundings capture movements

and measure our vital parameters or

levels of fitness. For rescue workers in

particular, the constant monitoring of

vital functions is of crucial importance

during emergencies. The data recorded

is collected at a control center, triggering

an early warning system so that work-

ers in peril can receive assistance quickly.

Fraunhofer technologies for autonomous

position location can provide valuable

support when evacuating people from

buildings or large public venues.

In the not-too-distant future, intelligent environments will be

making our lives easier. Touch-free sensors will allow us to con-

trol our surroundings with simply a word or gesture. An intuitive

hand movement is all it will take to turn the television on and

off. Sensors, whether portable or integrated in our surround-

ings, will detect how we are feeling, register our movements

or measure our levels of fitness. Ambient Assisted Living (AAL)

technologies will enable people – especially the elderly – to get

the support they need.

Multi-touch technology is already in use in many areas, e.g. the

latest generation cell phones. At CeBIT the Fraunhofer IGD uses

its multi-touch table to present a visualization platform for 3-D

molecules. With simple hand movements, users can enlarge,

turn or move the molecules. The technology turns complex 3-D

protein structures into a visual experience, allowing us to ana-

lyze them interactively and understand their movement patterns.

Emergency and rescue workers help people in danger, risking

their own lives and health to save others. For their protection,

researchers at the Fraunhofer IIS are developing systems to

continually monitor their vital functions. Systems for measuring

heart rate and breathing are embedded within the worker’s

T-shirt. The readings are transmitted to a control center, so that

the worker can be warned of critical situations in advance and

live in our 3D television studio. Taking

the example of a news broadcast, we will

show you the entire process chain, start-

ing with the 3D recording of the news-

caster on location, followed by real-time

data transfer and data processing, and

culminating in 3D reproduction in the

studio. Two microHD cameras developed

by the Fraunhofer IIS will be shown on

a side-by-side rig along with STAN, the

stereoscopic analyzer developed by the

Fraunhofer HHI, as they conduct a real-

time recording. The H.264 real-time

encoding is via hardware, while the data

is transmitted to the TV studio via wire

(Internet). Reproduction on set is based

on a polarized display, viewed through

3D glasses. This technology paves the

way for the use of 3D media in movie

theaters, television and computer games.

Telephone calls via the Internet, a procedure developed by the Fraunhofer FOKUS,

makes voice over IP possible. Development of the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP),

which can set up whatever type of multimedia connection is desired, dates back

to the early 1990s. Like e-mail, calls can be received anywhere with Internet

access. In 1999, SIP was recognized by the Internet Engineering Task Force

(IEFT) as the official standard for Internet telephony. Just one year later, FOKUS

researchers launched the SIP Express Router (SER), an open software that allows

users to handle more than 3000 internet phone calls per second with a normal

PC. Now, 70 to 80 percent of all internet phone calls in Germany are made using

SER systems.

ESP, airbags, fuel-injection systems – cars today are simply crammed with electronic

gadgets. There are generally more than 100 microprocessors installed in a normal car,

each from a different vendor and with its own software. It is no easy job ensuring

these systems function together as a whole. That is why researchers at the Fraunhofer

IESE has been developing methods for testing the safety of on-board software.

They are not only examining the software programs, but also running risk analyses.

At what point does something become dangerous? How can an accident be pre-

vented? If dangerous weaknesses are detected, there are different ways of eliminating

them. Often, just a small adjustment to a system is enough to compensate for a sensor

failing. But sometimes it is necessary to install redundant systems.

Even though mp3 player are not bigger than a matchbox, they can store a huge selec-

AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) and HE-AAC (High Efficiency AAC). With mp3, music

files can be reduced up to 90 percent without changing the perceptual sound quality.

mp3 was developed by Fraunhofer IIS and became an international standard in 1992.

The breakthrough came in 1998, when low-price memory chips and fast PCs allowed

creating mp3 files and access to the Internet became available for everyone. Today,

smart PassWord storaGe

At ATMs, in the office, in online shops, Internet auctions or when accessing Internet

communities – wherever you look, passwords and PINs are there to guard access.

And their number is increasing every day. But how are ordinary people supposed

to remember all the different passwords they need to know? MobileSitter from the

Fraunhofer SIT is a solution to this problem that can be loaded onto any cell phone.

This secure memory for passwords is resistant to dictionary attacks. The trick lies in

the security software used. MobileSitter does not respond to the entry of an incorrect

master password with the standard “wrong password“ message. Instead, it provides

attackers with a list of PINs and passwords that they could conceivably think are valid.

Only when he has entered all these codes on the Web page of a bank or auction

company, will the hacker realize that he has been duped.

Gesture control was previously the do-

without any direct physical contact. The

range and sophistication of applications

variety of tasks typically performed in

kitchens, where hygiene and practicality

are of paramount importance and hands-

The versatile iPoint can be used in any
