STRONG START FOR GOLDEN BEARS The Golden Bears are off to their fifth 3-1 start to a season in head coach Kelly Boe’s eighth season leading the program, with the last being in 2011-12. The program looks for its third 4-1 start under Boe, which he achieved in his first two years leading the team in 2006-07 and 2007-08. LAST WEEKEND: SPLIT VS. MICHIGAN D2’S Last weekend, Concordia picked up a split on a neu- tral floor, losing on Saturday to Northwood (84-91) before rebounding with a big 22-point win over Ferris State (79-57). With both Division II programs hailing from Michigan, the contests were counted as in-re- gion per NCAA regionalization guidelines. SERIES HISTORY: CONCORDIA 5, MSU 14 Concordia is 5-14 all-time against MSU after being swept last season … prior to last year’s sweep, Concor- dia had won three-straight games against MSU includ- ing two on the road … at Gangelhoff Center, Concor- dia is 3-6 against MSU and since MSU has joined the NSIC in the 2008-09 season, Concordia has a 3-7 mark against the Mavericks. LAST YEAR: MAVERICKS SWEEP CONCORDIA On their march to an NSIC title last year, the Mavericks swept Concordia with a tight 76-71 win in Mankato on Dec. 1 before an 86-70 win at Gangelhoff Center in mid- January. In the first meeting, Concordia turned a 7-point deficit with under 10 minutes to play in the contest into its only lead with a 9-1 spurt. Although it would be Concordia’s only lead, the Golden Bears forced a pair of ties down the stretch and a layup by Shea Mandli made it a 1-point game (71-72) in the final minute. Concordia had the ball twice with a chance to tie in that closing minute including the closing seconds before MSU sealed the game late at the foul line. Cole Olstad and Terez VanPelt each scored 18 in the game while Mandli was a perfect 7-7 from the floor for 14 points with six rebounds. In the second meeting, Terez VanPelt’s 22 points and five assists were not enough in an 86-70 home loss to 8th-ranked MSU. Concordia started hot, making 8-of-9 from the floor in the first 8:33 of play for a 19-12 lead. But MSU mounted a 20-2 run during a stretch where Concordia missed six straight shots. MSU opened up a 9-point halftime lead and the game would not be closer than a 7-point margin

CONFERENCE HOME OPENER AHEADAfter a 3-1 start in non-conference play, Concordia tip-off the 22-game NSIC schedule against the top team in the league, #11 Minnesota State, at Gangelhoff Center at 4 p.m.

The Mavericks were picked fi rst in the NSIC Overall and South Division preseason polls by league coach-es, and had the #5 ranking in the nation in the NABC Preseason Top-25 poll as well.

STRONG START FOR GOLDEN BEARSThe Golden Bears are off to their fi fth 3-1 start to a season in head coach Kelly Boe’s eighth season leading the program, with the last being in 2011-12. The program looks for its third 4-1 start under Boe, which he achieved in his fi rst two years leading the team in 2006-07 and 2007-08.

LAST WEEKEND: SPLIT VS. MICHIGAN D2’SLast weekend, Concordia picked up a split on a neu-tral fl oor, losing on Saturday to Northwood (84-91) before rebounding with a big 22-point win over Ferris State (79-57). With both Division II programs hailing from Michigan, the contests were counted as in-re-gion per NCAA regionalization guidelines.

SERIES HISTORY: CONCORDIA 5, MSU 14Concordia is 5-14 all-time against MSU after being swept last season … prior to last year’s sweep, Concor-dia had won three-straight games against MSU includ-ing two on the road … at Gangelhoff Center, Concor-dia is 3-6 against MSU and since MSU has joined the

NSIC in the 2008-09 season, Concordia has a 3-7 mark against the Mavericks.

LAST YEAR: MAVERICKS SWEEP CONCORDIAOn their march to an NSIC title last year, the Mavericks swept Concordia with a tight 76-71 win in Mankato on Dec. 1 before an 86-70 win at Gangelhoff Center in mid-January.

In the fi rst meeting, Concordia turned a 7-point defi cit with under 10 minutes to play in the contest into its only lead with a 9-1 spurt. Although it would be Concordia’s only lead, the Golden Bears forced a pair of ties down the stretch and a layup by Shea Mandli made it a 1-point game (71-72) in the fi nal minute.

Concordia had the ball twice with a chance to tie in that closing minute including the closing seconds before MSU sealed the game late at the foul line.

Cole Olstad and Terez VanPelt each scored 18 in the game while Mandli was a perfect 7-7 from the fl oor for 14 points with six rebounds.

In the second meeting, Terez VanPelt’s 22 points and fi ve assists were not enough in an 86-70 home loss to 8th-ranked MSU.

Concordia started hot, making 8-of-9 from the fl oor in the fi rst 8:33 of play for a 19-12 lead. But MSU mounted a 20-2 run during a stretch where Concordia missed six straight shots. MSU opened up a 9-point halftime lead and the game would not be closer than a 7-point margin

MSU was led by Assem Marei with 18 points, eight rebounds and fi ve assists as fi ve Mavericks scored in double-fi gures.

SCOUTING MINNESOTA STATEThe Mavericks are coming off a trip to the NCAA Sweet Six-teen a year ago, dropping an intense regional fi nal contest to Winona State at home at Taylor Center in Mankato, Minn.

They also won the NSIC Regular Season Overall & South Division Championships along with the NSIC/Sanford Health Tournament Championship.

Armed with plenty of returners, the Mavericks were picked by national coaches as the preseason #5 team in the land and open the NSIC slate as the top team in the NSIC Pre-season Coaches Poll, both overall and in the division.

The early results have done nothing to deter those lofty expectations as MSU is off to a 6-1 start and is currently ranked #11 in the country.

It’s been a balanced effort thus far with six Mavericks averaging in double-fi gures in scoring with junior Zach Monaghan leading the team with 14 per game. Gage Woo-ten is averaging 13.7 points and leads the team with 6.9 rebounds per game.

MSU has been a higher-powered offensive squad, averag-ing 89.6 points per game while shooting 51.3% from the fl oor with 18.3 team assists per contest.

After losing the second game of the season to Alaska An-chorage (72-83) at the CCA Division II West Coast Tip-Off, the Mavericks have won fi ve straight games.

RETURNERS SPARKED STRONG FINISH IN 12-13After starting 0-10 in conference play a year ago, the Gold-en Bears rallied to win 5-straight, 6-of-7 and 7-of-10 down the stretch last season led by then sophomores Terez Van-Pelt, Cole Olstad, junior Cordell Smith and freshmen Mike Yahnke and Shea Mandli. Additionally, current seniors Clay Olstad and Taylor Steinbauer provide experience and depth to the mix which also upgraded with incoming transfers senior Chris Halvorsen and juniors Keith Crock-ett and Travon Mitchell.

Last year’s hot fi nish has sparked a 3-1 start in 2013-14. The team is 9-5 over its last 14 overall games.

VANPELT HAD RECORD-SETTING 2012-13Junior Terez VanPelt was an All-NSIC Second Team per-former a year ago and is among just one of four returning All-NSIC players in the conference this year with all of them being Second Team selections last year. In his breakout sophomore year, VanPelt ranked among the program’s elite players statistically, below is a breakdown of his sophomore season:Points, Season GP Pts. Avg.1. Brian Jamros (2003-04) 28 529 18.92. Terez VanPelt (2012-13) 27 521 19.33. Brian Jamros (2004-05) 29 511 17.64. Craig Heiman (2007-08) 28 505 18.05. Jim Leibel (1994-95) 30 500 16.6

FT Made, Season GP FTM1. Terez VanPelt (2012-13) 27 1502. Kyle Timmer (1992-93) 28 145

In addition to the above marks, VanPelt fi nished with the seventh-best free throw shooting percentage (.838), set the record for free throws attempted (179), had the fi fth-most assists (128) while setting the record for playing time, aver-aging 35.7 minutes per game.

VANPELT OPENS 2013-14 STRONGJunior Terez VanPelt has picked up where he left off for the Golden Bears, as he ranks fi fth in the league in scoring (16.3) and seventh in assists (3.8) per game. He’s scored at least 13 points in each game and is averaging seven free throw attempts per contest. He scored a season-high 19 points in Sunday’s win over Ferris State, aided by 11-12 free throw shooting.

COLE OLSTAD NOTESJunior Cole Olstad is also coming off a breakout sophomore season (like VanPelt). Last year he averaged 15.1 points, a team-high 5.0 rebounds and was second on the team with 52 assists. He topped 10 points in 20 of 26 games played, had 5-plus rebounds 16 times including a career-high 10 rebounds in an early season win over Alaska-Fairbanks.

His 30-point performance last year in a win at U-Mary was the 27th 30-plus point game in program history which has been achieved by 14 different players.

He’s also Concordia’s top wing defender and regularly matches up with an opponent’s top scoring threat, whether it’s the opponent’s 1, 2 or 3 position.

He’s off to a solid start once again in 2013-14, averaging 15.3 points, 3.8 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1.3 steals and has two blocked shots while hitting 92.3% (12-13) from the foul line.

He’s scored in double-fi gures in all four games and has three games with 17 points. In Concordia’s non-conference games against Northwood and Ferris State, he hit three three-pointers on back-to-back days.

CORDELL SMITH: FROM GRIDIRON TO HARDWOODSenior Cordell Smith is a dynamic two-sport athlete mak-ing the transition from football to basketball for the fi nal time in his college career.

After missing the fi rst two games due to the conclusion of the football season, Smith returned in Concordia’s non-conference games against Northwood and Ferris State by averaging 10.0 points and 6.0 rebounds with a 6-1 assist-turnover ratio in 17.5 minutes per game off the bench. He had 12 points in his season debut against Northwood, also collecting seven rebounds with four assists.

Last year he avoided missing any games as he averaged a career-high 20.9 minutes per game and started the fi nal 10 games of the season with the team producing a 6-4 record with him as a starter down the stretch. In those 10 games as a starter, Smith averaged 12.7 points and 7.4 rebounds per game while fi nishing the season by averaging 7.1 points and 4.3 rebounds overall.

His breakout game last year came against Bemidji State, setting career-highs in scoring, rebounding, threes and min-utes while hitting the game-winning three with 4.4 seconds left. He hit 8 of 11 shots and 5 of 7 threes to fi nish with a double-double with 21 points and 10 boards.

As a football player, Smith is a three year starting wide re-ceiver and led the team in receiving yards (554) and touch-downs (10). In his three years as a football player, Smith has 104 catches for 1,650 yards (15.9/catch) and 20 touch-downs in 33 career games played with one year left to play.

FREE THROW MARKSMENLast year, Concordia led the Northern Sun and ranked fourth in the country in free throw shooting, making 78.1% as a team overall (27 games) and an even sharper 80.4% mark in 22 NSIC contests. Terez VanPelt had a string of 30-straight free throws made spanning nearly fi ve full games during the conference schedule as he set program records for free throws made (150) and attempted (179).

All seven players who averaged at least 14 minutes per game shot at least 72% from the foul line as well.

Free throw shooting has been key early in 2013-14 again, as Concordia has attempted at least 18 free throws in all four games while getting to the foul line on average 6.3

more times per game than the opposition. While Concor-dia’s team percentage is down to start the year (.717), the team has a +4.5 average scoring margin at the stripe on the year.

Cole Olstad has been the top free throw shooter early, making 92.3% (12-13) while Shea Mandli (9-11, 81.8%) has also been excellent. Senior Cordell Smith has made 10-12 (83.3%) in his fi rst two games back last weekend as well.

80 IS THE MAGIC NUMBER FOR BOE’S TEAMSThe Golden Bears only topped 80 points in a game six times last season and once so far in 2013-14, but the team also only allowed 80-plus points eight times last year and once this year. The Bears went 4-2 in games in which they scored 80+ a year ago but are 0-1 so far this year.

Since Kelly Boe has been head coach, Concordia is 44-13 when scoring at least 80 points, 15-2 when scoring 90-plus and 8-0 when scoring 100-plus.

When allowing 80 or more points under Boe, Concordia is 8-48. They are 3-15 when allowing 90-plus and are 1-1 when allowing over 100 points.

In games where both teams score 80-plus points, they are 8-13 all-time under Boe.

2013-14’S MAGIC NUMBER 70?While history suggests the Golden Bears’ record hinges on which team hits 80, this year Concordia has found success by keeping the game under 80.

In Concordia’s three wins, the Golden Bears have scored in the 70’s each time, while holding the opponent under 70 in each game as well. In Concordia’s only loss, the Golden Bears scored a season-high 84 points but surrendered 91 in the process.

SOPHOMORE POSTS MANDLI & YAHNKEConcordia has a pair of sophomore post players, Shea Mandli and Mike Yahnke, that contributed and started regularly last year as freshmen.

In 2013-14, Mandli has drawn all four starts in the post after starting 21 out of the 25 games he played last year.

Yahnke has been the fi rst big man off the bench this sea-son after starting 16 of the 26 games he played last year in his redshirt freshman year after transfering from Division I Texas Pan American.

Both have been productive in their roles in 2013-14, with Mandli averaging 6.0 points and 5.0 rebounds while Yahnke averages a team-high 6.5 rebounds and scores 5.8 points off the bench.

Both big men can hit the three-pointer as well, each attempt-ing at least one per game. Yahnke’s had the hot hand early, making 3-of-6 from long range.

Mandli had 16 points, six rebounds and three assists in the win over Mayville State while Yahnke added nine points and 11 rebounds off the bench in the same game.

HALVORSEN: GOLDEN GOPHER TO GOLDEN BEARWhen senior Chris Halvorsen graduated from the Univer-sity of Minnesota with a degree in biostatistics, he decided to transfer to Concordia for his fi nal year of eligibility to pur-sue an MBA degree.

He’s slated into the starting lineup early on where he brings athleticism to the team’s defense and rebounding while add-ing another inside presence. He’s second on the team with 6.0 rebounds per game. In the opener, he had 10 points, nine rebounds, two steals and two blocks in 31 minutes in a win over Mayville State.

He was an Academic All-Big Ten student-athlete at Min-nesota as a reserve on the NCAA Tournament third round 2012-13 squad.

KEITH CROCKETT THE COMBO GUARDJunior transfer Keith Crockett has been an immediate starter for the Golden Bears as the off guard, although he’s shown ability to play the point as well. The versatile guard has averaged 10.8 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2.3 assists.

He’s scored in double fi gures in three out of four games this year, has at least four rebounds and two assists in every game as well. He’s also been connecting from long range, making 53.3% (8-15) from three-point distance while hitting at least one in each game with a season-high four three-pointers against Northwood.

MITCHELL BRINGS INSTANT OFFENSE OFF BENCHJunior Travon Mitchell has also made an immediate impact while getting big minutes off the bench and is the team’s third leading scorer with 11.8 points per game.

The transfer guard has played at least 20 minutes in every game off the bench and hit double fi gures in three of the four games with at least eight points in all four games. He’s also hit at least one three-pointer every game with at least two three’s in three out of four games.

BROTHERLY LOVE: THE OLSTAD CONNECTIONSenior Clay Olstad and junior Cole Olstad are playing in their third and fi nal year together as college players. The duo led Plainview-Elgin-Millville High School to multiple state tournament runs before joining the Golden Bears. Clay has emerged as a key reserve as a senior, averaging 10.5 minutes off the bench while scoring nine points on three three-pointers in the win over Waldorf.

The Olstad family connection to Concordia runs deeper, as the brothers have two older sisters, Kali and Candace, that played for the Concordia women’s team together. Also one year apart, Candace played from 2005-09 and scored 1,267 points while Kali played from 2006-10 and scored 888 points. Candace won two NSIC regular season and tourna-ment titles and competed in three NCAA Tournaments while Kali won three NSIC regular season titles, two NSIC tourna-ment titles and also competed in three NCAA Tournaments including a Sweet 16 run in her senior year.

Kelly Boe has been head coach of the Golden Bears since the 2006-07 season and is now in his 10th year in the men’s basketball program entering the 2013-14 season. He has compiled a 103-94 overall record as head coach while producing a 73-69 mark in Northern Sun play.

The eighth head coach in the history of the men’s basketball program, Boe is the program’s all-time leader in winning percentage and his 102 wins rank third in school history.

Boe has led the Golden Bears to the upper tier of the Northern Sun by leading the team to host fi rst round NSIC Tournament games three times in his tenure as head coach while only missing out on the 8-team

tournament once before it moved to a 16-team fi eld in 2012-13.

In his fi rst season as head coach, Boe led the Golden Bears to their best season in school history in 2006-07 and the best season at the Division II level with a 21-8 overall record. Concordia also had its best fi nish in the NSIC with a 13-5 overall mark and a tie for third in the fi nal conference standings.

The Golden Bears posted their second 13-win NSIC campaign in the 2010-11 season while picking up a number of key road victories along the way against perennial league powers Winona State, St. Cloud State and Minnesota State among others.

Prior to being named head coach of Golden Bear basketball in the summer of 2006, Boe spent the previous two years as the top assistant coach at Concordia. In those two years, Boe assisted in guiding the Golden Bears to back-to-back winning seasons and a com-bined 34-23 record.

Boe’s background includes three successful NCAA Division II assistant coaching runs with St. Cloud State University (1997-99), Minnesota State University, Mankato (2001-03) and Concordia University (2004-06).

In between his fi rst two NCAA DII stints, Boe had a two-year stop at Madison Area Technical College, where he was an assistant for one season before taking over as head coach and guiding the squad to a Wisconsin Technical College League title in the 2000-01 season.

He started his career at St. John’s University as an assistant coach where he was able to learn under Jim Smith, who is the all-time winningest collegiate basketball coach in the state of Minnesota.

Boe has a master’s degree in sports management from St. Cloud State and a Bachelor of Science in Education/Sports Management from St. John’s University, graduating from SJU in 1996.
