Moments after a morning practicesession, Missouri Mavericks announcerBob Rennison stopped one of thenewest members of the team, high-octane forward Geoff Walker, for abrief interview and photo.

As he framed the photo, thepersonable announcer said, “Geoff, there’s a halo around your head.”

He was talking about a celestial

glare that was coming from a lightabove Walker’s head.

Mavericks coach RichardMatvichuk was talking aboutsomething totally different whenhe quipped over the weekend,“Fans are looking for this guyto be the Messiah – and the wayhe’s played the last two games,he just might be.”

Well, maybe that halo wasn’tfrom a light outside the teamlocker room.

“I don’t know about the Messiah,” joked Walker, who spent ve yearsin the American Hockey Leaguebefore spending the past twoseasons in the ECHL. “But I’m aveteran guy who can score goalsand I feel comfortable cominginto a situation where a teamis counting on me to put somepoints on the scoreboard.”

Walker, who joined the teamfollowing the trade of DavidRutherford to the Ontario Reign, teamed with Josh Brittain andteam captain Sebastien Thinelto lead the Mavericks to a 4-2victory over Tulsa Friday nightand a 2-1 nail-biter over Quad City

Saturday. Before those back-to-back wins, the Mavericks had lostseven in a row overall and seven ina row at home.

Brittain and Walker each had agoal and assist in the win over theOilers with Thinel adding a goaland two assists. In the one-goalmargin over the Mallards, Brittainscored his second goal in as many

games and Walker and Thinel eachadded an assist.

“Sebbie and Walker are eachthe type of player who make

everyone else on the ice that

much better and Brittain is reallycoming on strong,” Matvichuksaid. “They have been great thepast two games.”

Walker said he never skated with hisnew linemates before that rst game.

“We skated around in the pre-skate before the game, but myplane had some problems and hadto turn around head back to LasVegas before we landed in KansasCity,” Walker said, “and I got to thearena about 4:30, got ready for thegame and went out and played.

“And I felt instant chemistry withSebastien and Josh. Sebastien is aveteran guy who knows where toput the puck. I know if I’m open, and sometimes, even if I’m notopen, he is going to nd me. I thinkwe’re going to complement each

    other very well.“And Josh is a hard-working

player who will nd a way to scorewhen he gets the puck. It’s funny,I’ve only been here two gamesand I already feel like this is home.I was at a point in Ontario where Ididn’t even want to go to the rink.

“It just wasn’t fun. I didn’tfeel any of the excitement or

chemistry in Ontario that I feltthis past weekend. I can’t evenimagine how much better we aregoing to play when we get a few

    practices under our belts.”

    Thinel and Brittain echoed thosecomments.

“Walker is a veteran guy whocan score a lot of goals for us, andwe have already seen Josh scoresome big goals, so I am excitedabout being on the same line withthem,” Thinel said. “We neededsomeone like Geoff. Like he toldyou, we had immediate chemistry.

“We felt like we knew what eachother expected out there and Ithink that will only get better thesecond half of the season.”

Brittain, who was challengedalong with the rest of the Maverickslast week to raise his level of play, said Walker’s arrival was the sparkthe team needed.

“He comes in and has a goal andassist in his rst game and we

end a seven-game losing streak –that’s huge,” Brittain said. “I can’twait to see what he does next. Heand Sebbie are the veteran leaderson this team and it’s great to be onthe same line with them.”

HOCKEY LINGOCelly – A celebration, usually done after scoring a goal

Cherry Picking - When a player, generally a forward, hangs out behindthe play waiting for an outlet pass so that he can have a breakaway.Chirping - Another relatively new term to hockey, chirping is hockey’sversion of “trash talk”. Chirping is as much a part of the game as thepuck itself and can get pretty nasty at times, especially between twoteams who see each other often.
