Speaker(s): Stephanie Jacobe, Archdiocese of Washington; Patrick Hayes, Redemptorist Archives of the Baltimore Province Religious and diocesan archives professionals have been quietly developing a set of best practices to assess, acquire, catalog, and store the Catholica that remains in the wake of a closed or merged parish, or other Religious Institute property. This includes everything from paper documents and photographs, to architec- tural or artistic elements of physical structures. Often they do so with an eye to future use (repurposing) or collection development within the archive, where researchers will have access to heritage materials that

It will also present a more globalized context for these practices in the aftermath of the Novem- ber 2018 conference in Rome on the disposition of church patrimony from closed parishes and other Religious Institute properties. Speaker: Dan Justynski, Sisters of Mercy of the Americas - Northeast Community This course will discuss the desirability by municipalities and other land trust organizations for land conservation projects; the ideal timing of such projects; seeking the advice of local counsel; completing the applicable survey, title and appraisal work; coordination with the project partners, stakeholders, municipal sponsors, conservation groups and land trusts; the extent of Owner involvement; and legal and other documentation for the project. 10:30am to 11:30am Track MSP1906A Religious Facilities Needs Analysis & Programming. Speaker: R. Gregory Turner, Turner Duran Architects As the key initial step in long term facilities planning for parishes and Religious Institutions, the needs analysis process and its corollary, program definition, require a well‐organized effort. This course describes the “how-to” for doing so. 10:30am to 11:30am Track MSP1907A Asbestos Awareness and Maintenance Requirements Review. Speaker: Ashley Giesa, Engineering Systems Inc. (“ESi”) This course will discuss the rules, regulations and best practices associated with the identification, inspection and maintenance of asbestos-containing materials in schools and other religious properties, and the implementation of appropriate response actions in a safe and complete manner. Course takeaways will also include the following: where to look up asbestos laws and requirements; enhancing your ability to recognize potential asbestos-containing materials; and an outline of asbestos-related maintenance activities.

Speaker(s): Jean Hastie and Lori Pinkerton, Sisters of Mercy of the Americas - West Midwest Community This course will present a case study addressing the repurposing and/or divesting of Religious Institute and Diocesan properties. It will include a discussion of the associated process, engagement and planning methods, as well as provide an example of how to honor the legacy and mission of the religious community to serve a function that will be ministry-focused long after the majority of the religious members are gone. 3:15pm to 4:15pm Track MSP1909A Restoring, Maintaining and Repairing Stained Glass Windows. Speaker: Ronald Bovard, Bovard Studio, Inc. This course will define the restoration of stained glass versus the repair and maintenance of stained glass. The participants will also learn why stained glass windows fail; what comprises stained glass restoration and the techniques used; how to properly design protective covering systems; how to document the restoration process; and the safety and environmental exposures and practices for leaded stained glass restoration. 3:15pm to 4:15pm Track MSP1910A Protect Your Community, Ministries and Diocese through Slip Trip Fall Prevention. Speaker: Jeffrey Harrison, Christian Brothers Services Your organization's ministry can be at risk of incurring a slip trip fall type claim. Approximately 1/3 of all liability claims and 1/3 of all worker compensation claims are the result of slip trip fall type incidents. These incidents can cause serious injuries, potential lawsuits and can ultimately affect an organization's bottom line. This workshop will incorporate risk management strategies and walk each attendee through a 51-page Slip Trip Fall Prevention Resource Toolkit. The workshop will offer practical solutions on how best to prevent a slip trip fall type incident from occurring or reoccurring. FRIDAY, MAY 17, 2019 7:00am to 8:30am Roundtable Discussion Breakfast 9:00am to 12:00pm Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis Tour - Track MSP1911 Tour of the New Catholic Charities Campus for Homeless Services in St. Paul - Dorothy Day Place. Speakers: Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis; Cermak Rhoades Architects, Watson-Forsberg Co. This presentation, led by an AIA-member architect and others, will be a guided and narrated tour of the New Catholic Charities Campus for Homeless Services in St. Paul - Dorothy Day Place. Phase One (Higher Ground St. Paul): First phase of a larger campus of shelter, housing and support services. Addresses long-term homelessness by providing a range of shelter and housing options in one building for 479 people in a high-visibility gateway to downtown Saint Paul. Provides a sheltered, welcoming courtyard space facing the proposed second phase Dorothy Day Place courtyard. Phase Two (St. Paul Opportunity Center and Dorothy Day Residence): Second phase of a larger campus of shelter, housing and support services that includes Higher Ground Saint Paul. This facility provides permanent housing with 100 SRO units and 70 efficiency units, as well as comprehensive support service spaces for residents and clients, including housing and financial assistance, education and employment services, laundry and personal hygiene facilities, meal service in a 300-seat dining room, health and dental clinic and veterans’ resource hub. The large landscaped courtyard faces Higher Ground Saint Paul to create a welcoming, protected outdoor multi-purpose room.
