TISHA B’AVTisha B’Av, the ninth day of the Jewish

month of Av, is a day that commemoratesa number of different calamities in Jewishhistory. Among these sad events is thedestruction of both Temples in Jerusalem, the first by the Babylonians in 586 B.C.E.,the second by the Romans in 70 C.E.According to tradition, both events tookplace on the Ninth of Av. In addition, theExpulsion of the Jews from Spain occurredon this date.

The day is observed as a fast. Also, theBook of Lamentations (Eicha) is chanted ina mournful tune. This book, one of theMegillot, is a description of the tragicevents surrounding the ruin of the FirstTemple. Tradition ascribes its authorship tothe prophet Jeremiah. Tisha B’Av is theonly day when Tefillin are not worn at themorning service. This is connected with thefact that in the morning the sadness of theday is too much with us to wear the Tallitand Tefillin, symbols of joy. All in all,Tisha B’Av is a sad day of nationalmourning by Jewish people; we mustactively recollect the past to insure thefuture.

In addition to the reading ofLamentations on Monday evening, August4, the service will be enhanced withdramatic and poetic readings, describingdifferent periods of persecution fromancient times until today. Tuesdaymorning’s service will also include aselection from the Book of Eicha.

NEWS FROM THE KETER MINYANBy Harold Schwartz

The Tallit is one of the most authentic Jewish garments andits use one of the most iconic of all Mitzvot. The history of theuse of the Tallit comes from the Book of Numbers when Godtold Moses to speak to the people and tell them to wear “fringes”on the four corners of their clothes. These “fringes”, known as“Tzizit”, are tied in a very specific and highly symbolic fashion.Beginning with the knot closest to the material edge of theTallit, the tzitzit are tied as follows: 2 knots,7 coils, 2knots, 8coils, 2 knots, 11 coils, 2knots, 13 coils and finally 2 knots. Thesymbolism for these numbers is central to the entire symbolismof the Tallit. Seven plus eight equals fifteen which in“gematria”, numerology, is equal to the value of yud and heh,the first two letters of God’s name. Eleven is equivalent to vavand heh, the last two letters of God’s name (yud heh vavheh).Thirteen is equivalent to Echad (aleph ched dalet) whichmeans One; thus when one looks at the tzizit they rememberthat God is One.

The word “tzizit” in gemartia is equivalent to the number600. If one adds the eight strands and five knots (the four strandson each corner is doubled prior to tying) that equals 13 sotogether we have the number 613, the exact number of Mitzvotin the Torah. What a fantastic symbol to be wearing duringprayer! To gaze at the fringes and remember that God is Oneand we must recall all of his Mitzvot.

We now know the origins of the Mitzvah of the Tzizit andhow symbolic it is in our everyday Jewish tradition. As historyshows, the tzizit were placed on garments other than the Tallit.Avoiding the obvious Jewish symbol in areas of the worldhostile to Jews, the tzizit were placed on inner garments ratherthan the outer garment, the Tallit. The inner garment called theArbah Kanfot, or Four Corners was rectangular in shape, approximately three by five feet with a hole in the center for thehead to go through. Observant Jews, to this day, use thisgarment beneath their clothing to always be surrounded by areminder to observe the 613 Mizvot.

Many customs have arisen over the centuries as to who isrequired to wear a Tallit, when it is required to be worn and eventhe size of the Tallit is subject to much interpretation.Traditional customs provide that a “small Tallit” can be worn byboys from the time of Bar Mitzvah until marriage. At that time, one wears the “large Tallit” in hopes of accommodating futureoffspring (male, of course) under the father’s Tallit.Conservative Jewry makes no distinction regarding size andboth men and women are welcome to wear a Tallit. A Tallit isnot worn by congregants during the afternoon service (exceptfor Yom Kippur and Tisha Ba’Av) and at the evening service.Only those leading the service, reading from or called to theTorah need put on the Tallit during afternoon and eveningservices. Hopefully, this brief discussion of the Tallit and Tzizithas clarified this central symbol in Judaism.

BECOME A DOCENT AT

THE HOLOCAUST MUSEUM

Joel Greenman has been a docent at the Holocaust Museum andrecommends becoming a docent:

One of the most rewarding things that I have gotten involved insince I retired from the active practice of Medicine has been theIllinois Holocaust Museum. Since Illinois was the first state tomandate the teaching of Holocaust studies in middle school, we getthousands of children coming through the museum everyday as partof their curriculum. As a Docent, I get to experience the “I didn’tknow that” moment of so many of these kids most of whom are notJewish and have just started to learn about this most importanthistorical event. The Museum is starting a new training session forDocents starting in October of 2014. You can join the many otherBeth Shalom volunteers who give of their time to this most importantinstitution. YIZKOR MEMORIAL BOOKEvery year prior to the High Holidays we request the names of departed family/friends

be submitted for inclusion in the Yizkor Memorial Book. It is customary to make a nominalcontribution when submitting names for the Yizkor Book. The money donated goes directlyinto the Gold Family Sabbath Fund which primarily supports the ARK.

For those of you not familiar with the ARK, it provides free social and medical servicesto help distressed members of the Chicagoland Jewish community stabilize life situations andhelp them attain self-sufficiency with dignity and respect. The Gold Family Sabbath Fundalso provides support to many of CBS’ Social Action programs such as supporting Troopsoverseas, Buffalo Grove PADS and grocery delivery to ARK families. Please givegenerously.
