Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 17, 2014
Matthew 15:21-28 This is one of those passages where it is essential to understand the historical context. Jesus was not leveling a terrible insult at the Canaanite woman. She was a Gentile of the region, not a member of the Jewish people. Thus, she belonged to the culture that worshipped idols and did not follow the Jewish rituals of cleanliness. Because of these practices, the Jews referred to Gentiles as “unclean dogs”. The Jews received God’s blessing because they believed in God. This woman proved that she did too; she recognized Jesus as the Messiah, calling him “Lord, Son of David!” We too live in a culture that is more and more ignorant of the true God. We are surrounded by idols of all kinds, and by practices that are hardly clean. Like the Canaanite woman, we need the courage to be countercultural. Even when secular society might mock us, may we be willing, like this humble woman of the Gospel, to profess our faith with passion and persistence.

Dear friends, Thank you for all who turned out in great numbers to the various talks we had on the previous three Sundays with Catholic Answers. Catholic Answers was very pleased as well with your partici-pation and commitment to Jesus Christ. It gave me a chance to
brag about all of you, which I do often!
Three things for the week: 1) If you liked those three talks and are craving
some more information on the Catholic faith we are hosting Catholic Answers again for a week long series of talks from Monday, August 18th to Friday August 22nd. They will be each evening starting at 6:30 pm in the church itself. These are special talks given by Catholic Apologist Hector Molina. His topics will be the following:
Monday (8/18) - The Power of the Rosary Tuesday (8/19) - The Seven Habits of Highly Evan-gelistic Catholics Wednesday (8/20) - The Case for Confession Thursday (8/21) - The Communion of Saints Friday (8/22) - The Biblical Basis for the Seven Sacraments
2) Reminder that on Saturday, August 23rd, everyone is invited to join us in the evening for a wonderful time of music, fun, and games. Rally’s will be support-ing us with hamburger meals on site to eat that even-ing. All proceeds go directly to support Santa Sophia.
3) As you saw last week, I posted the results of the daily Mass schedule questionnaire; based on those results, I am confident that it will be of great value to our parish community to change the daily Mass time from 7:45 am to 8:00 am. This change will become effective on Tuesday, September 2nd. I am grateful for those who participated, and I want to be very clear that those who are inconvenienced by this change, please know that I am deeply sorry for the inconvenience. It in no way is meant to be an expres-sion that I do not care about you or your concerns. Sometimes the decisions I have to make as a pastor inconvenience a few, but the parish will be well served by your inconvenience, if you offer it up to the

Real Questions by Real Parishioners:
There are many ways to go about answering this
question. The first one that pops into mind is to use an
example that I think reveals the answer quite
strikingly.
An example used often in understanding Just War, or
really as an example for evaluating moral questions,
is the horrible event of the Jewish Holocaust prior to
and during WWII. Placing this into our imagination
for a moment, we can rephrase the last part of this
question and ask, “Is it contradicting the teachings
and life of Jesus to use physical force to try and bring
the Holocaust to an end?” I would be hard pressed to
hold the position that Jesus would want us to stand
idly by while a holocaust goes on. Excluding compli-
cated circumstances that perhaps only a political his-
torian could address, the answer to the question seems
to be “No”, it doesn’t contradict the teachings and life
of Jesus to fight a just war.
Another way to approach the question is to look at
Jesus’ life and ask: Did Jesus ever result to physical
force in order to stop something that was wrong and
was he justified in doing so?
In John 2:13-22, Jesus makes a whip of cords and
starts driving people out of the temple. His reason?
Because there was something unjust going on; namely
just outside the temple people were cheating others
out of money. The devout Jew would come in to try
and offer sacrifices to God, and the priests would very
kindly provide animals for purchase (a nice gesture to
make it easier to give sacrifice to God). However,
they would overcharge for the animals, and when
people would exchange their money, they were given
unfair exchange rates and fees. Imagine next Sunday
if I started forcing everyone in the parish to bring
their own bread and wine for Mass, but it had to be a
particular kind of bread and wine, and since you
couldn’t find it, I would provide it for your purchase
before Mass. Of course, I won’t let you use American
ASK THE PASTOR
money, but special Santa Sophia money and I charge
interest, I cheat you on the exchange rate, and then I
also overcharge for the bread and the wine. This
would be an unjust situation, and I’m sure Jesus
would make another whip pretty quickly if He
stopped by one weekend.
This is the basic principle of Just War Theory: that
there are some situations that are so unjust that phys-
ical force can be used in order to correct the injus-
tice. The Church then has, under the guidance of the
Spirit and with the wisdom of saints and theologians,
articulated specific conditions where a “Just War”
can occur. These can be found in detail in the Cate-
chism of the Catholic Church paragraphs 2302 to
2330. There are four primary conditions of when
there can be legitimate defense by military force:
1) The damage inflicted by the aggressor on the na-
tion or community of nations must be lasting,
grave, and certain.
2) All other means of putting an end to it must have
been shown to be impractical or ineffective.
3) There must be serious prospects of success.
4) The use of arms must not produce evils and dis-
orders graver than the evil to be eliminated.
Of course on top of these conditions for beginning
armed military defense is the just conduct a nation
must have in war, which includes all the moral teach-
ings of the church, but in particular that “non-
combatants, wounded soldiers, and prisoners must be
respected and treated humanely” (CCC 2313).
Further, it should be mentioned that the responsibil-
ity of discerning the moral legitimacy for a just war
belongs to those who have responsibility for the
common good in leadership. Soldiers who fight in
conflict are not held accountable for the decision of
superiors, but rather must carry out their duty honor-
(Continued on page 7)
The Catholic Church says we can fight in just wars (with a long list of conditions to decide whether a war is just or not). This seems to me to contradict the teachings and life of Jesus. Can you explain or reconcile this?

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOU
Our Common Ground Collaborative outreach ministry is looking for willing parishioners to perform two im-portant roles: #1 - A computer gifted individual who can help organ-ize our communication, both among our members and outbound. Four hours a month would likely be all that's needed. #2 - Coordinator for our school music program- bring-ing 'live' music performances to students at our Com-mon Ground served school. You don't have to carry a tune, just be able to juggle dates with both school ad-ministrators and music providers. This person is pick-ing up with the second year of an existing program. If you can help with either one of these needs - or would just like to learn more about them - please contact Den-nis Regan at: (619) 670-8487 or [email protected].
SAINT VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY The pantry volunteers have a Monday morning fresh produce give away. Every Monday, beginning at 9:00 am, fresh pro-duce is available to anyone, as long as it lasts. The St. Vincent de Paul Society had 344 families (1329 people) visit last month. Please remember that many of these families rely on subsidized school lunch pro-grams to feed their kids during the week, and that is not available during the summer months. Giving to the Santa Sophia food pantry directly helps those chil-dren in our community. If you'd like to make an actual food donation, Top Ramen and macaroni and cheese products are especially needed at this time.

gust 17th, we will also be gathering between masses from 9:15 am to 10:45 am in CMO Room 2. If you are feeling a call to community or just want to praise God and join in the Liturgy of the Hours with us, please come join us! Mission and Purpose: The Brothers and Sisters of Charity is a Christian community founded by Catho-lic musician and author, John Michael Talbot. “The rule of the Brothers and Sisters is the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. We should be troubled about nothing except this all encompassing rule. All that matters is that one be created anew.”
