St. Bridget (or Brigid) of Kildare is one of the three major patron saints of Ireland along with Saint Patrick and Saint Columba. Saint Bridget’s faith and labors for

the Lord are remembered among the Irish people through prayers, sacred places, blessings and customs. St. Bridget was an extraordinary woman of faith: strong in her mission, loyal to the Lord, faithful to the Church, generous to the poor and hospitable to missionaries. St. Bridget laid strong foundations for the Church in Ireland. Her feast day is February 1st, the first day of the Celtic Spring.

Words of WisdomA Light Unto My Path

Some biblical commentators and theologians – especially in the past hundred years or so – have argued that the divinity of Jesus is clearly presented only in the Gospel of John and that the synoptic Gospels present a purely human Christ, a teacher and miracle worker perhaps, but not the Son of God. Nothing could be further from the truth. Saint John indeed presents the divinity of the Lord in relatively straightforward language – The

Word became flesh; I and the Father are one; He who sees me sees the Father, etc. – but the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke are no less emphatic regarding Jesus’ divine nature, though they employ a different symbol system and mode of expression than John.

Matthew 10:37 is a striking example: Jesus said to his apostles, “Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.” If a merely human figure said this, we would legitimately laugh him to scorn. To their great credit, neither the Buddha nor Muhammad nor Confucius ever said any such thing. But Jesus effectively declares, “you must love me more than you love even those you treasure most in the entire world.” And mind you, he doesn’t say, “you must love my teaching or you must love the God I proclaim more than these”; he says, “you must love me more than all of them.”

The only one who could legitimately make such a de mand is the living God, the good that transcends anything in creation. Though he is stating his case a bit more obliquely and indirectly than John, Saint Matthew is teaching here, just as clearly, that Jesus is divine.

A women’s silent retreat on The Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius of Loyola will take place July 10-12 at San Damiano Spiritual Life Center in White Post, VA. The weekend silent retreat will be preached by the Priests of Miles Christi with spiritual talks and time for personal meditation in silence. Saint of the WeekSt. Irenaeus:

Irenaeus was born of Greek parents in Asia Minor. His own works establish a few biographical points, such as that as a child he heard and saw Polycarp, the last known living connection with

the Apostles (through John), in Smyrna, before he was martyred in 155. The

era in which Irenaeus lived was a time of expansion and inner tensions in the

church. In many cases Irenaeus acted as mediator between various contending

factions. The churches of Asia Minor continued to celebrate Easter on the same date (the 14th of Nisan) as the

Jews celebrated Passover, whereas the Roman Church maintained that Eas-ter should always be celebrated on a

Sunday (the day of the Resurrection of Christ). Mediating between the parties, Irenaeus stated that differences in ex-

ternal factors, such as dates of festivals, need not be so serious as to destroy

church unity. In 177 Irenaeus became bishop of Lugdunum. As bishop, he was especially concerned with the Gnostics,

who took their name from the Greek word for “knowledge.” Claiming access to secret knowledge imparted by Jesus

to only a few disciples, their teaching was attracting and confusing many

Christians. After thoroughly investigat-ing the various Gnostic sects and their

“secret,” Irenaeus showed to what logical conclusions their tenets led. These he contrasted with the teaching of the

apostles and the text of Holy Scripture, giving us, in five books, a system of

theology of great importance to subse-quent times. Moreover, his work, widely used and translated into Latin and Ar-menian, gradually ended the influence of the Gnostics. The development of

the creed and the office of bishop (even the unique position of authority of the Bishop of Rome) also can be traced to

Irenaeus’ conflicts with the Gnostics. Be-cause the Gnostics denied that the God revealed in the New Testament was the Creator, the first article of the creed was for polemical reasons directly connect-ed with Genesis (“In the beginning God

created the heavens and the earth”). Irenaeus refers to the creed as a “Rule of Truth” used to combat heresy. His Feast

Day is June 28th.
