Before Jesus began preaching, teaching, and healing throughout Galilee and Judea, he came to John to be bap-tized. The Spirit of God descended upon him and God’s voice called out, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” As Christians, baptized with the Holy Spirit, we are empowered to carry on Jesus’ mission. Let us con-sider how God calls us to put our faith into action. May God be well pleased.

The opening lines of the first reading are echoed in the Gospel. “Here is . . .my chosen one with whom I am pleased” (Isaiah 42:1). “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased” (Matthew 3:17).

In Jesus Christ, the Son of God, we see the fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecy of what scripture scholars call the Serv-ant of the Lord oracles. This is the first of four in Isaiah. We will hear a second one next weekend. In these passages, the chosen one comes who serves the LORD. He is called from birth, brings justice, heals the infirm, frees the impris-oned, extends salvation to all, suffers for the sins of others,

and in the end, is redeemed. Isaiah’s words about the LORD’s servant could be ap-plied to the Son of God as well. We have within these words our ideal model in how to serve the Lord. As Chris-tians, we are baptized into this mission.

Over the last month or so, we have heard the news of God’s most wonderful gift revealed to a larger and larger audience. First Mary was told of the role she was asked to play as the mother of God. When Joseph was planning to divorce her, he was told of how Mary came to be pregnant. When the child was born, the angels proclaimed the good news to shepherds. Last week we heard of the epiphany the magi experienced. Now, as Jesus is baptized, God speaks from the heavens to reveal the Messiah as the Son of God.

This passage from Acts tells the story of Cornelius and his household, who received the Holy Spirit and began speak-ing in tongues even before they were baptized. Many were astounded because these were Gentiles, but Peter had said, “In truth, I see that God shows no partiality” (Acts 10:34). We can no more restrain the Spirit than Peter could.

Antes de que Jesús comenzara a pre-dicar, enseñar y sanar a través de Galilea y Judea fue a que Juan lo bau-tizara. El Espíritu de Dios descendió sobre él y se oyó la voz de Dios que decía: “Éste es mi Hijo muy amado, en quien tengo mis complacencias”. Como cristianos bautizados con el Espíritu Santo hemos recibido el po-der para continuar la misión de Jesús. Consideremos cómo Dios nos llama a poner en práctica nuestra fe y espere-mos que Dios esté complacido con nosotros.

Las primeras palabras de la primera lectura hacen eco en el Evangelio. “Miren a mi siervo . . . mi elegido, en quien tengo mis complacen-cias” (Isaías 42, 1). “Éste es mi Hijo muy amado, en quien tengo mis com-placencias” (Mateo 3, 17). En Jesucristo, el Hijo de Dios, vemos el cumplimiento de la profecía de Isaías, a la cual se refieren los eruditos de las Escrituras como parte de los oráculos del siervo de Dios. Éste es el primero de los cua-tro oráculos en Isaías. La semana próxima oiremos el se-gundo. En estos pasajes el elegido viene a servir al Señor.

Desde su nacimiento fue destinado a traer la justicia, a sa-nar a los enfermos, a dar libertad a los cautivos, a ofrecer a todos la salvación, a sufrir por los pecados del mundo y, por último, a recibir la redención. Las palabras

de Isaías acerca del siervo de Dios pueden aplicarse tam-

bién al Hijo de Dios. En estas pala-bras tenemos nosotros el modelo ideal de cómo servir al Señor. Co-mo cristianos hemos sido bautiza-dos para esta misión.

Más o menos durante todo el mes pasado hemos oído la noticia de que el don más maravilloso de Dios le fue revelado a una audiencia ca-da vez más grande. Primero le fue anunciado a María el papel que se le pedía aceptar como madre de Dios. Cuando José planeaba divor-ciarse de ella le fue revelado cómo fue que María había

concebido. Cuando el niño nació los ángeles proclamaron la buena nue-va a los pastores. La semana pasa-da escuchamos el relato de la epifa-nía y la experiencia de los magos. Ahora, durante el bautismo de Je-sús, Dios habla desde el cielo para

revelar al Mesías como el Hijo de Dios.

Este pasaje de los Hechos relata la historia de Cornelio y su familia, que recibieron todos el Espíritu Santo y comenzaron a hablar en lenguas, aún antes de ser bauti-zados. Muchos se quedaron atónitos porque ésos eran paganos, pero Pedro les dijo: “Ahora caigo en la cuenta de que Dios no hace distinción de personas” (Hechos 10, 34). Ni Pedro pudo, ni tampoco nosotros podemos frenar al Es-píritu Santo.
