The History of Cathedral Preparatory School and Seminary
1914-2015

Charles Edward McDonnell, Brooklyn’s second Bishop, was a man who talked little but did much. During his twenty-nine years as Bishop (1892-1921), McDonnell dedicated hundreds of churches, schools, and hospitals across Long Island. He founded Catholic Charities, started the diocesan newspaper, The Tablet, and welcomed many religious communities to the Diocese. As the Catholic population grew, Bishop McDonnell was concerned about further cultivating vocations to the priesthood. In the pages of The Tablet, he wrote:
All of us are agreed, I believe, that we must take special measures if we would shelter those among our Catholic boys, whom their pastors and confessors would choose as probably called to the priesthood, and protect them from the modern materialistic spirit that pervades the very atmosphere… by placing them apart, educating them with those only who look forward to that same great work in life, the priestly field of labor…
In 1891, Brooklyn’s first Bishop, John Loughlin, founded St. John’s Seminary in Bedford-Stuyvesant. Bishop McDonnell saw the need for a minor seminary to nurture vocations at an earlier stage. In 1913, then, he asked Auxiliary Bishop George W. Mundelein, to work on starting such a school. (In 1563, the Council of Trent decreed that every diocese was “bound to support, to rear in piety, and to train in ecclesiastical discipline a certain number of youths, in a college to be chosen by the bishop for that purpose.”)
A capable administrator and fundraiser, Bishop Mundelein persuaded Mr. George Logan Duval, a successful businessman and a devout Catholic, to help. On June 2, 1914, he purchased the S.A.R. Moses estate on the corner of Brooklyn’s Washington and Atlantic Avenues for fifty-thousand dollars. The site was chosen for its accessibility to trains and buses. Duval has been called “Cathedral’s greatest lay benefactor.” In July 1914, Bishop Mundelein wrote to the priests of the Diocese:
Rarely has a diocese undertaken a work of greater importance and of more splendid promise… Long after we have been called to receive the vineyard laborer’s wages, may it be a source of blessings to this Diocese…
Even if all of its students did not become priests, Bishop Mundelein insisted, the school would still produce committed laymen loyal to the Church. Furthermore, he wrote, the school’s very insistence symbolized the Diocese’s commitment to fostering vocations.
On the morning of September 7, 1914, 8:30 a.m., at St. John’s Chapel in Fort Greene, 85 young men gathered from all corners of Long Island for the school’s opening Mass. Bishop Mundelein who asked the students:
Why are you here? Why have we begun this college? The answer is to be found in the fact that the army of peace must have officers as well as the army of war. You have been selected to fill the officers’ posts and you have come here to be trained for that work. Yours is to be a more vigorous course of training than that of other colleges, for yours is a higher work.
Celebrating 100 Years Of Catholic Academic Excellence & Forming Men for Greatness
God willing, he said, one day “you will find yourselves at the altar of your ordination.” It all depended on whether they answered two questions: “(1)Is God calling you? (2) Are you listening to the call?” Then and now, Cathedral was a place where young men could discern that call, to determine where God was calling them and to listen what God was saying to them. What made the school unique was its focus on preparing young men for the priesthood.
The new school was named Cathedral College of the Immaculate Conception, since it was the Bishop’s own school for future priests. The Tablet enthusiastically endorsed the work of Cathedral:
What better or more blessed investment could possibly be conceived than that whereby some worthy boy is enabled to realize his pious ambition of becoming a priest of God.
Classes at Cathedral started on September 14, 1914. The Washington Avenue school was dedicated on December 8th, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. In the tradition of Roman seminaries, the students had Thursday off and attended school on Saturdays. Students spent six years at Washington Avenue, where they completed two years of college. If they went on to the major seminary, they would spend six years in the major seminary for further college as well as theological studies. (This was known as the “six and six” system. It lasted until 1967, when a separate college seminary was built in Douglaston, Cathedral College.) On September 8, 1915, Cathedral College’s new building, created in the style of Flemish Gothic architecture, was dedicated. It soon became known as “one of Brooklyn’s famous Catholic landmarks.” Shortly thereafter, Bishop Mundelein was named Archbishop of Chicago. (He was named a Cardinal in 1924.)
Bishop McDonnell picked a group of capable and enthusiastic young priests for the faculty, including Father Thomas E. Molloy, future Bishop of Brooklyn, who served as the first Spiritual Director. Father James J. Higgins, Cathedral’s second Rector, wrote Bishop McDonnell in September 1917: “When one is in love with a cause or a work he is encouraged to use every lawful means to advance it. I am in love with the Cathedral College and its work.” Higgins’s successor, Father Anthony Reichert (for whom the first alumni association was named), wrote that the faculty was anxious to “make Cathedral College the first in the nation.”
Cathedral College’s first commencement exercises took place in February 1919. Of the 34 graduates in that class, 25 became priests in the Diocese of Brooklyn. Over the next 40 years, the Diocese would ordain an average of 35 priests per year. (Between 1931 and 1933, an incredible 97 priests were ordained!) The majority of these priests were graduates of Cathedral. Over the years, certain families gave their sons to the Church in large numbers: the Holzheimers, Pfundsteins Grahams, Puricks, Crawfords, Regulskis, and Arceses. (Today over one half of the Brooklyn presbyterate is composed of Cathedral alumni.)
Up to the present day, Cathedral alumni have also contributed significantly to the ranks of the hierarchy, both in Brooklyn and abroad. The first alumnus to be named a bishop (and Cardinal Archbishop of St Louis) was John J. Carberry, of the Class of 1924. (In 1978, he was the first Cathedral graduate to vote in a papal election.) He was later followed into the College of Cardinals by Anthony J. Bevilacqua, Class of 1943, who became Archbishop of Philadelphia in 1988. (One 1927 graduate, William Kupfer, became a Maryknoll Bishop in China.) In more recent years, Bishops Gerald Barbarito ’67, Raymond Chappetto ’65, Peter Libasci ’69, Paul Sanchez ’66, and Edward Scharfenberger ’65, were ordained to the episcopate.
The lay alumni, one graduate stated, “remained devoted to God’s service, but now they would serve in a different way.” Speaking at Cathedral’s fiftieth anniversary in 1964, Mr. George Williams (1924) said that his experience at Cathedral “nurtured and strengthened my Catholic faith as a layman.” Football great Vince Lombardi, who attended the school in the early 1930’s, called Cathedral “the best school in the city.” Asked where he got his considerable energy from, Lombardi best recounted Cathedral’s influence when he said: “I derive my strength from daily Mass.”
Celebrating 100 Years Of Catholic Academic Excellence & Forming Men for Greatness
Under Archbishop Thomas E. Molloy (1922-1956), Cathedral acquired one of the finest seminary faculties in the nation. Young priest-professors like George Fogarty, Thomas Gradilone, Eugene Molloy and George Deas were sent to graduate school at Fordham, Notre Dame, Columbia, NYU and Johns Hopkins. One the baseball field and the basketball court, Phil Reilly, Marty Bannan, and Howie Basler made Cathedral a force to be reckoned with. For over thirty years, the Father Ryan Players put on a variety of plays, including Stalag 17 in 1964. In addition to the numerous priest-faculty, dedicated lay teachers like John F. (“Jocko”) Crane and Francis X. McDermott contributed richly to the life of the school.
Although Cathedral was originally built to hold 250 students, by 1960 the numbers were more than double that. Annex classes were held in St. Joseph’s Parochial School on Pacific Street. In November 1961, Molloy’s successor, Archbishop Bryan J. McEntegart, announced plans to establish a Queens division. In the fall of 1963, Cathedral Preparatory Seminary opened up on 92nd Street in Elmhurst. The site, located near several subway lines, was chosen for its accessibility from most parts of Queens. A statue of Our Lady, a duplicate of that in the lobby of the Brooklyn school, was placed in the new school’s lobby. (Interestingly, one of the alternative sites that had been proposed was used for Archbishop Molloy High School.)
One observer noted that its dedication represented “a growing and vibrant Catholicism in the diocese.” Monsignor Robert E. Welsh served as Rector for both the Brooklyn and the Queens schools, while Father George V. Fogarty was named Vice-Rector for the Queens school. In 1967, when Father Daniel O’Connell was named Principal in Brooklyn and Father John Egan in Queens. Tablet Editor Ed Wilkinson (Class of 1965) recalls of the faculty: “They continue to be our heroes and are spoken of in reverential terms.”
At the time of the 50th anniversary in 1964, Archbishop McEntegart said of the Cathedral experience:
By its very nature, Cathedral College looks to the future. It exists for the future because it is both a seminary and a school. As a seminary, it receives the seedling vocation, planted and watered by the heirs of Paul and Apollo, while God alone, slowly and gradually, gives the increase. As a school, it admits young men, not fully formed in body or mind or will, in order to direct and develop them into mature young men.
Amid the tumult of the 1960’s, a new program was started in the Queens school to address the challenges of the day. Father Edward W. Troike, a math teacher and track coach, started the Summer Leadership Program to prepare young men for high school in the summer before eighth grade. Today the program, directed by Father James Kuroly (Class of 1998), is entering its 49th year. Hundreds of young men have passed through Cathedral’s doors in the years since the program was opened.
As demographic shifts occurred in Brooklyn, and Cathedral experienced declining numbers at the Brooklyn school, diocesan authorities began to consider whether it was feasible to continue operating two preparatory seminaries. In April 1985, Bishop Francis J. Mugavero (Class of 1934) announced that Brooklyn Cathedral would graduate its last class that June. In a later interview with Ed Wilkinson, Bishop Mugavero said it was the hardest decision he had had to make in his 22 years as Bishop of Brooklyn.
On December 8, 1985, Bishop Mugavero visited Cathedral in Queens, now the sole prep seminary for the Brooklyn Diocese, to bless the statue of Our Lady that had formerly stood in the lobby of the Brooklyn school. Placed in front of the 92nd Street entrance, the relocated statue symbolized the union of the two schools.
Throughout the years, Cathedral has remained faithful to its mission of opening the minds of students to knowledge and truth. Under the leadership of Monsignors Philip Reilly, Ignatius Catanello, Richard Marchese, Joseph Calise
Celebrating 100 Years Of Catholic Academic Excellence & Forming Men for Greatness
and Father Fred Marano, the school achieved nationwide recognition for its academic excellence and commitment to the spiritual formation of its students. The graduation rate has been 100%, with students going on to college, professional studies and military service.
In recent years, Cathedral has continued to upgrade and make improvements to its building, with a new science lab, studio, smartboards in all classrooms, and a media center This has been in large part due to gifts given by alumni and friends of Cathedral, thereby placing the school in a better position for continued success in the future. Cathedral continues to build on its foundation to ensure continued success in and out outside the classroom.
In 2011, Cathedral felt a great loss when Mr. James G. Dilg retired after 46 years of teaching at Cathedral. Like Brooklyn’s “Jocko” Crane before him, Mr. Dilg formed hundreds of young men in a spirit of faithful manhood. Father Fred Marano, the Rector at the time, called him “the model of a Catholic Christian gentleman for us here at Cathedral.”
In 2013, under the leadership of Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio, Cathedral underwent a structural change, being renamed Cathedral Preparatory School and Seminary. Father Joseph G. Fonti (Class of 1984) was appointed Rector-President, while for the first time in Cathedral’s history, a lay principal, Mr. Richie Diaz (Class of 1996), was appointed. Today Cathedral is a school open to all Catholic young men serious about their faith and serious about learning. While daily Mass and spiritual exercises such as a Holy Hour are required for all, the seminary component provides an environment where young men can discern a possible vocation to the diocesan priesthood. Over the last ten years, eleven Cathedral alumni have been ordained to the priesthood.
As Archbishop McEntegart stated at the time of Cathedral’s 50th anniversary, Cathedral looks to the future. Cathedral alumni continue to be ordained to the episcopate, priesthood and permanent diaconate. What makes Cathedral so special to its students and alumni? Dr. Philip Franco (Class of 1993), who was recently ordained a Permanent Deacon, aptly says:
I would not trade my years at Cathedral for any amount of money, because they were and remain priceless. At Cathedral Prep I made lifelong friendships, grew as a person… and came closer to Our Lord and the Church. All of this was on top of a great education.
Father Christopher Bethge (Class of 2007), one of three Cathedral alumni ordained to the priesthood this past June, recalled that it was at Cathedral Prep that Father John Cush challenged him to seriously consider a priestly vocation.
Father Bethge said:
Father Cush took the time every day to ask, not in a generic way, but very specifically, ‘Are you thinking about the priesthood? Could God be calling you? If that question doesn’t get asked, the call can’t be answered.
For Father Fonti, the Cathedral experience is:
A superior education in an environment where each man is known, loved, respected and challenged to grow in wisdom, maturity and faith.
In this celebration of Cathedral Prep’s 100th year, may the Lord continue to bless the Cathedral experience, as we all remain confident in its illustrious history and its future grounded in the respect and challenge of each young man who enters its doors.

Celebrating 100 Years Of Catholic Academic Excellence & Forming Men for Greatness
Musings of a Cathedral Alumnus
As Cathedral celebrates its 100 wonderful years as truly a school of excellence I was thinking, as I and my very distinguished classmates who are approaching our 50th anniversary of graduating the six year school next year, about our years there. They were memorable and remarkable in so many ways, the golden anniversary of the school merely being one of them. My gosh, I guess we are truly becoming “elders.” I hope some wisdom comes along with that.
The education itself stands out, of course, as being incomparable along with the wonderful and dedicated teachers and staff who led us (from the Latin, “educare,” “lead out” – see, I remember) to learning and growing into the well rounded priests and laymen we became to take our places in the Church and society. I was so positively influenced and inspired by my English teachers that I went on to become one myself. Teachers like Fathers Hunt, Breslin, Deas, and Feldhaus made me look forward eagerly to every new book or topic we covered.
I need to point out a few highlights of our tenure there beginning with the very first day of our showing up at 555 Washington Avenue. Monday, September 12, 1960, hurricane Donna hit New York and we started Cathedral. There were 120 of us freshmen, so many of us that three of our four classes went to school in the “Annex” which was the top floor of St. Joseph’s Elementary School two blocks away. How can any of us forget carrying armfuls of textbooks across Washington and Atlantic Avenues in the wind and the rain to our new classrooms led by the undaunted Fr. James Hunt. I was a kid from Queens to whom Brooklyn was a foreign country so the future Bishop Ray Chappetto, a sophomore from my parish, OLMC in Astoria, and another sophomore kindly met me on the train and took me to school. However classes were dismissed early and at different times so it was the first miracle of my high school life that I found my way home back to Astoria that day.
It was a time of big changes, social unrest and new awakenings. The Church was not immune to these. Pope John XXIII declared an “aggiornamento” and announced that there was going to be a Second Vatican Council. Bishops from all over the globe met with him, and after he died met with Pope Paul VI, in a surprising exercise of the Church’s Magisterium to bring the Roman Church into the Twentieth Century including inviting the laity to take their rightful place instead of being silent onlookers. Our Ordinary at the time was Archbishop Bryan McIntegart. When he returned from one of his trips there, we as a student body filed into St. Joseph’s Church on Pacific St. It was the only place all the students from the six years of the school could assemble comfortably. We listened excitedly and with great hope and dreams as our Bishop told us personally about what was going on in Rome. We were wide eyed with anticipation about what was happening in the Church.
Meanwhile the student body continued to grow and it was decided to build a second high school for Queens and ground was broken for a four year college in Douglaston. In September 1963 half of us who lived in Queens were assigned to the Elmhurst building to finish high school and the Brooklyn half of our class stayed at 555. I, being from Astoria, went to Elmhurst, a beautiful new building but not quite complete. The gym wasn’t ready so we had Health for a number of months. The chapel was not complete either so our temporary chapel was what eventually became the language lab on the third flour in the chapel hallway.
Not everything was wonderful, however. On the morning on Friday, November 22, 1963 the student body attended Mass together in Queen of all Saints Church in Brooklyn to remember the deceased members and benefactors of our Cathedral family, an annual tradition, and we were free the rest of the day. Later that afternoon as I sat doing homework I learned that our President, John Kennedy, had been shot and killed in Dallas, Texas. The memory is still so clear to me because, as one of the first sacristans in the Queens building, I remember laying out black vestments for the celebrant to wear as we met as a student body again in the temporary chapel in the Queens building to attend a memorial Mass for our slain president the next day (we still were attending school on Saturdays in those days).
Celebrating 100 Years Of Catholic Academic Excellence & Forming Men for Greatness
So many memories. It would take more than a few paragraphs to do them justice - the neighborhoods and settings themselves, for example. I recently attended both celebrations of “Where It Continues,” commemorating 100 years of Cathedral’s legacy. I could not believe how the neighborhoods have evolved. Leaving the A or GG trains at the Clinton-Washington Station was a scary affair at 8:15 on a Saturday morning for a kid from Queens in the 1960’s. Broken cheap wine bottles littered the station entrances. I kept my head down, looked straight and quickly walked a deserted street to school. When I was there in the fall it was a bustling, exciting, obviously newly enlivened and growing place. When I went to Elmhurst in the spring I found myself among thousands of shoppers in a mall that popped up where empty lots existed in my memory. New York – someone said a great city if they ever finish it!
Nearly 70 of us graduated the six year Cathedral College Preparatory Seminary and over twenty were eventually ordained in 1971 and 1972. I have lifelong friendships with some classmates that I treasure and have re-connected with dozens of my classmates over the years that we have been getting together at the Immaculata Dinners, and I am constantly impressed with the doctors, lawyers, teachers, executives, theologians and many other roles besides the priests - and bishop - we have all become. The one common denominator I know we would all agree upon is the outstanding education and foundation with which Cathedral nurtured each one of us over 50 years ago. When we sing the Salve Regina, we do not need to look at the words!
