LITURGY OF THE WORD

Wisdom 7:7–11 Riches are nothing in comparison to wisdom.

Psalm 89 (90) “Fill us with your love, that we may rejoice.’

Hebrews 4:12–13 The word of God is living and effective.

Mark 10:17–30 or 10:17–27 Sell all that you have, and follow Jesus’ way.

The author of Wisdom, having been given the spirit of wisdom, rhapsodises on the greatness of this gift, better than riches, power, and even well-being, which are all transitory. In Hebrews we hear God’s word described as a double-edged sword, ready to penetrate our very being. Jesus’ words do so in the Gospel: ‘Go and sell everything you own and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.’ Let us allow God’s word to penetrate our hearts.

St Andrew’s Cathedral is a Parish of the Archdiocese of Glasgow, a Designated Religious Body, Charity Number SC018140.

WELCOME TO OUR VISITORS

This church was built in 1816 to serve Glasgow’s rapidly expanding Catholic population. Following the restoration of the Catholic Hierarchy of Scotland in 1878, St Andrew’s became the Cathedral of the restored Archdiocese of Glasgow. In April 2011 a major renovation project was completed, providing the Cathedral with fresh décor, new artwork and an innovative cloister garden. Today it remains a popular city centre church, offering tranquillity for busy lives, as well as a fitting venue for the important liturgical events of the Archdiocese. Thank you for your presence and for your support.

CATHEDRAL NEWS

St. Andrew’s Cathedral Choir: we are pleased to have the whole choir back at 12noon Mass but new members are also welcome. Ability to read music not essential. Contact our Director of Music, Maria Madden by email at [email protected] for more information.

Becoming a Catholic: Normally at this time of year, we begin the RCIA process, by which people learn about our faith and can become full members of the Church (at the Easter Vigil next year). In the current situation, we may have to adapt our normal practice in certain ways. However, we still want to support and help anyone who wishes to join us. Let us know of your interest over the next few weeks (e-mail the Cathedral House or speak to one of the priests) and we will try to arrange to meet for prayer, reflection and discussion.

NOTICES

COP26 Conference—Although we are all disappointed that Pope Francis is unable to come to Glasgow as he had hoped for the major conference taking place here in November, this is still a major event of world-wide significance and we would encourage you to pray for its success and for a greater awareness and appreciation of God’s gift of creation.

The Knights of St Columba have been serving the Catholic Church since 1919. They offer an opportunity whereby men can be more active in their faith and in their service to the Church, and are looking for new members to help them in their work. If you are interested in joining, contact John O’Donnell on 07854 886425 or email: [email protected]. For more information about their organisation, visit www.ksc.org.uk. See posters on our notice boards.

Climate Petition: SCIAF has launched an appeal to parishioners to sign a petition to the Prime Minister ahead of the COP26 climate change conference in Glasgow in November. You can sign the petition at: www.sciaf.org.uk/timeforaction.

CORONAVIRUS UPDATE

Mass: Social distancing indoors has now ended and there is no obligation to keep 1m distance between household groups. For those who are still wary about being too close, one side of the church has been reserved for social distancing. It is still essential to provide track and trace details, wear face masks and sanitise hands.

There is no need to book for weekday Mass—first come, first served. However, we encourage you to book for all Sunday Masses, including the Saturday Vigil, via the link on our website. Please arrive in good time for Mass, so we can check your name, and follow the safety procedures before Mass begins.

Until the Sunday Obligation returns, you may choose to attend Mass another day, rather than Sunday. If you are unwell, if you have any Coronavirus symptoms, or are in self-isolation, you must not attend Mass to protect others and prevent the spread of the virus

To augment good practice with regard to hygiene and to reduce unnecessary

contact, please take your parish bulletin and hymn sheet away with you.

Volunteers Required to assist with stewarding and sanitising the pews after Masses

throughout the week. Please email/phone the Cathedral Office (see front page)

with your name and contact details, and let us know when you would be available.

Confessions: Unfortunately the current rules still prevent us from using the Confessional Boxes (people are too close together, there are no opening windows to allow better ventilation). We will arrange more opportunities for Confession as circumstances allow. However, it is still possible at the moment to email or phone the Cathedral House to arrange an appointment for Confession.

Collections: The Archdiocese has asked parishes to return to the practice of second collections for special purposes. To make this possible, without confusion, we will now resume collections with bags during the Mass. The stewards will move around the Cathedral with the collection bags as previously. However, we ask you not to touch the bags, but simply to drop your donation in as they go round. To allow this to happen, a few rows on the right hand side are again taped off so that the stewards can move around safely.

International Exhibition: The Miracles of the Eucharist designed by Blessed Carlo Acutis. For details of events taking place at Turnbull Hall, University of Glasgow on 4th, 5th, 6th November and St. Columba’s Church, Hopehill Road on 7th, 8th and 9th November, see posters on notice board. Contact Br. Raj Govindarajah, SSS on 07448 649 153 or email: [email protected]. The events include NIGHT FEVER at St. Andrew’s Cathedral on Saturday 6th November from 6.30—10pm.
