Cathedral of St. John the Baptist 10 July 2016
Collection for Infirm Priests
Our diocese has a strong history of dedicated
men who have offered a lifetime of service to
the Catholic faithful here in South Carolina.
Even before the establishment of our diocese in
1820, groups of dedicated priests have served
our local region. That tradition of service
continues to this day. A primary goal of our
diocese is to properly care for our priests by
providing them with much needed medical
attention. Bishop Guglielmone requests your
assistance to provide our ill or retired priests
with our best care and support in this time of
escalating medical costs. Please be generous to
our collection for infirm priests on
17 July, 2016 at all Masses. These priests have
spent their lives caring for others and helping
those most in need. Thank you for your
generosity!
We welcome all visitors to the Cathedral of
St. John the Baptist. Docents are available for a
tour of our Cathedral following the 5:30 pm
Saturday Vigil Mass and the 9:00 & 11:15 am
Masses. If you are interested in a tour, please
wait next to the Pulpit after Mass. You may
make at donation by text at (843) 580-1719.
Due to a minor issue in our
parish data base, some
parishioners who give
electronically were delivered
envelopes in June when they
have not previously received them. If you
received envelopes in June and do not wish to
in the future, please contact the Church Office
at 843-724-8395 or email Cheryl at
Happy Anniversary Monsignor!
Monsignor Brovey was
ordained on 6 July, 1991
as a priest for the
Diocese of Charleston.
Thank you to
Monsignor for answer-
ing God’s call to His
priesthood and for be-
ing a conduit of God’s
grace and mercy to all you have ministered to
for the last 25 years. Be assured of our very
special prayers during the month of July!
We need them in life's early morning,
We need them again at its close;
We feel their warm clasp of true friendship,
We seek them when tasting life's woes.
At the altar each day we behold them,
And the hands of a king on his throne
Are not equal to them in their greatness;
Their dignity stands all alone;
And when we are tempted and wander,
To pathways of shame and of sin,
It's the hand of a priest that will absolve us,
Not once, but again and again.
And when we are taking life's partner,
Other hands may prepare us a feast,
But the hand that will bless and unite us
Is the beautiful hand of a priest.
God bless them and keep them all holy,
For the Host which their fingers caress;
When can a poor sinner do better
Than to ask Him to guide thee and bless?
When the hour of death comes upon us,
May our courage and strength be increased,
By seeing raised over us in blessing
The beautiful hands of a priest.

The Cathedral Choir
is taking a well-deserved break for
the summer months. Rehearsals will resume in
mid-August as will their singing of the Solemn
High Mass each Sunday morning at 11:15. They
will be also performing in the Cathedral Music
Series throughout the year, which will include
the annual Bishop’s Concert with the Charleston
Symphony Orchestra and Chorus. If you have
ever given thought to possibly joining the Cathe-
dral Choir, now is the perfect time to do so! We
currently have openings in each section
(Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass) and would wel-
come any new members.
NEW!
This year we are pleased to announce that we
will establish the St. Cecilia Choir for girls in
grades 9-12. The choristers will provide musical
leadership for various Masses scheduled
throughout the year as well as combining on oc-
casion with the Cathedral Choir. The St. Cecilia
Choir will rehearse each Wednesday evening
from 6:00pm-7:00pm.
Cathedral Music Ministry
Two years ago we established the
St. Benedict Choir for girls in grades 3-7. The
Choristers provided musical leadership for
the 9:00am Sunday Mass, which has tradition-
ally been a family-orientated Liturgy. The
girls enjoyed singing and the parishioners en-
joyed hearing their music throughout the
year. We are looking forward to another excit-
ing year. The St. Benedict Choir will rehearse
each Tuesday afternoon from 4:30pm-5:30pm
and will be singing at least twice a month.
The choristers will learn about vocal produc-
tion, music theory and history, sight-singing,
and there will also be fun musical activities!!
For further information on any of the
Cathedral choir programs, please contact
Daniel Sansone at 843-724-8395 or email,
