The Holy Father’s September Prayer

Intention Evangelization: Parishes at the service of the mission That our parishes, animated by a missionary spirit, may be places where faith is communicated and charity is seen.

Last weekend was a great time for sports fans from Wisconsin. The Brewers swept the Cubs in a battle for the division lead. In regards to football the Wisconsin Badgers won on Saturday, and the Green Bay Packers defeated the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday afternoon. I realize locally the NFL team lost to the Philadelphia Eagles, so for Washington fans last weekend wasn’t something to be too excited about. It was an indication that the Redskins certainly have a few things to work on. The Packers on the other hand looked pretty good, espe-cially our defense. There is some work to be done on offense, but overall the season opener is hopefully a good indication of how things will be this year. Beating a formidable team like the Seahawks, 17-9, who are also predicted to do well this season, is a great way to start the season. No doubt we have to do something similar with our spiritual lives. There is always something to work on for we are not perfect. We have to strive for holiness and avail ourselves to God’s grace, which pulls us through the bad times and bears great fruit in those good times that come our way. Last Sunday I spoke about Aaron Rodgers, the Packers quarterback, during my homily at the Masses I offered. I made reference to an ESPN Maga-zine article based on an interview with the record-setting quarterback. Some consider Rodgers the best quarterback in the NFL right now. Some contest that, particularly because he has been to only one Super Bowl, which the Packers won. Aaron was asked if it bothered him that he has only won one national championship. To his credit, in my opinion, he said it didn’t, because for him football is not the end all, be all of his life. As I mentioned last week, for some that might be considered “heresy.” It did not concern me; instead I was dis-turbed by something else Rodgers said in this interview. I am repeating some of my comments from last Sunday’s homily, for which I apologize, but there is an important lesson to be learned here. I knew Rodgers was not Catholic, but he was raised a devout Christian. He said during this interview that he met a non-denominational minister from Michigan. This pastor is known for his progres-sive approach to the spiritual life and also is an inspirational speaker, whom the Packers had brought in to speak to the team. Aaron was convinced by this min-ister that God imposes no rules on us. The result—Aaron decided that while he still believed in God, he now realized God did not have to have a major role in his life. Big mistake! That truly is concerning and does perhaps explain some of the other aspects of Aaron’s life, such as his current alienation from his family. We need God. He needs to be the center of all we do. He has to be the focus of our lives. It really is a matter of our salvation. That is why I write this column each week. That is why I offer Mass every day. That is why we pray and do good works.

We can do good things for others and not have God as part of our lives. But then when bad things happen, such as a hurricane or two, an earthquake, or a confrontation with hatred, we can turn to Our Lord and find some interior peace and consolation. Without Him we deprive ourselves of that grace and without the grace things can easily seem hopeless. It may even lead us to won-der why we should try to go on living. Jesus Christ changes all of that. I write this column on the sixteenth anniversary of “9/11.” That infamous day could have been cause for many to lose hope, but as a nation we did not, in part be-cause, despite how things often seem to be today, we were still a God-fearing people. I pray we continue to be. I’m not sure Aaron Rodgers is anymore, but there is hope for him for as that article/interview indicated, he is searching for meaning. That is a good sign. I certainly hope the Packers have a great season and that last Sunday’s win was just one of many more to come this season, in-cluding against Atlanta this Sunday. More importantly, I hope Aaron returns whole-heartedly to God and that each of us turns to Him always.

Personal Items Drive Con nues St. Veronica’s Knights of Columbus are sponsoring another personal items drive to support MESA (Madison Emergency Services Association, Inc.) in Madison County, VA. We will be collecting the following items: soap, shampoo, tooth brushes, toothpaste, dental floss, deodorant, feminine products, diapers (sizes 4, 5, 6), baby wipes, toilet paper, tissue, laundry detergent, dish washing liquid (NOT for dishwashers), Lysol, multipurpose cleaners, trash bags (large), adult incontinence items, antiseptic cream and band aids. Gas cards (BP, Exxon and Shell) in any increments are greatly appreciated. You can leave the gas cards at the church office or drop them in mail slot located in the parish hall. Religious Educa on News Religious Education class sessions begin this Monday and Tuesday, September 18th and 19th. Registration forms are in the vestibules and on our website. Thank you to all who have answered the call to help teach the Faith to our young people. The religious education program still needs one Assistant Catechists for Grades 3 and 6 on Mondays. Volunteers are vital to the success of the religious education program. No experience is necessary. The only requirement is to be a Catholic in good standing with a desire to pass on the Faith to the children of our parish. All volunteers are eligible for tuition discounts. St. Veronica Catholic School Seeks Extended Day Staff: Dependable individuals who possess the values of our school are encouraged to apply for an Extended Day Teacher position. This position would be M-F for 1.5 hours in the morning for Before Care and/or After Care from 3:00-6:00 pm. The need to work cooperatively and effectively as a team member of the Extended Day program is fundamental. Additionally, First Aid, CPR, and MAT training are preferred, but not necessary. Diocesan Pilgrimage 2017 Join Bishop Burbidge for the 2017 Diocesan Pilgrimage to the Basilica of the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC, on Saturday, October 14th. Our Diocesan Pilgrimage falls during the 100th anniversary of the apparitions in Fatima, when Our Lady called for worldwide prayers for peace. Sis ne Chapel Choir to Perform at Basilica Performing in the U.S. for the first time in more than three decades on Wednesday, September 20th at 6:30 pm in the magnificent Great Upper Church of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, this group of 30 boys and 22 men is considered the most prominent Catholic ensemble and oldest choir in the world. ABLAZE: All youth in grades 9-12 are welcome to join us on Sundays (except 2nd Sundays) from 1:30 -4:00 pm in the Catacombs. This year we will be cooking meals together, praying with Scripture, reading the lives of the saints, and talking about current events. IGNITE: All youth in grades 6-8 are invited to join us on Fridays (except 1st Fridays) in the Parish Hall from 7:30 pm to 9:00 pm for fun games, pizza, prayer, and an opportunity to learn more about our Catholic Faith. Our first IGNITE of the school year is Friday, September 22nd. Bring a friend! DC United Match and "The Restless" in Concert: All youth in grades 6-12 are welcome to join us on September 23rd for DC United's Faith Night. The event costs $40 and includes dinner, tickets, and transportation. Permission slips and money due by September 17th. Sign up today. Corn Maze in the Plains: Friday, October 13th, 4:00 pm-9:30 pm. All youth in grades 6-8 are invited to join us. This fun evening includes a night time corn maze, bonfire, barn yard games, and more. Cost is $20 and includes dinner and transportation. Registration forms and $20 are due by October 8th. RALLY: Bishop Burbidge invites all high school students of the Diocese to join him at RALLY 2017. This annual event is an opportunity for the young Church in the Diocese of Arlington to gather each year to pray, learn, and celebrate the Catholic faith. RALLY includes Mass with Bishop Burbidge, Eucharistic Adoration, inspirational speakers and entertainers, breakout sessions, inflatable games, music, and more. We will be leaving at 9:00 am from the parish hall on Sunday, October 22nd and returning at 9:30 pm. The day begins with brunch at IHOP followed by RALLY at Bishop O'Connell High School. The cost for the day is $40 and includes brunch, dinner, and Rally events. Registration forms and $40 are due by October 15th. Help Stock the Catacombs: We are currently seeking the following donations. Thank you in advance for supporting our ministry. Items can be dropped off to the parish office during business hours or to the Catacombs during Youth Apostolate events. The help of St. Veronica’s Parishioners is desperately needed in providing PERSONAL ITEMS for those in NEED!

The St Veronica’s Knights of Columbus are sponsoring another personal items drive to support MESA (Madison Emergency Services Association, Inc.) in Madison County, VA. The poor of this region of Virginia are in desperate need of the personal items that allow them to go to work and school AND to keep their homes clean.

St. Veronica’s will be collecting the following items:

soap, shampoo, tooth brushes, toothpaste, dental floss, deodorant,

feminine products, diapers (sizes 4,5,6), baby wipes, toilet paper,

tissue, laundry detergent, dish washing liquid (NOT for

dishwashers), Lysol, multipurpose cleaners, trash bags (large),

adult incontinence items, antiseptic cream and band aids.

Gas gift cards* (BP, Exxon or Shell) in any increments are greatly

appreciated.

Will you help us in meeting the personal needs of our neighbors in

Madison, Culpepper, Orange and Rappahannock Counties?

Please drop off donated items at the church in or near the wooden bins located in the north and south

vestibules of the Church from Saturday September 16th through NOON Sunday September 24th.

*You can drop off the gas cards at the parish office or drop in the mail slot located in parish hall.
