“Put out into deep water and lower your nets for a catch.” Simon said, “Master, we have worked hard all night and have caught nothing,

but at your command I will lower the nets.” When they had done this, they caught a great number of fish and their nets were tearing.”

¿Following Jesus can mean leaving some things behind. What do you need to let go of to follow Jesus more fully in your life? When recently did God call you to do something that was difficult?

LLAMADO ANUAL DIOCESANO It starts with you! We are grateful to those who have pledged so far. ADA funds provide a critical source of revenue for the many services and ministries pro-vided by our Diocese of San Jose such as ministerial formation, sem-inarian education, chancery, ceme-tery and parish staff, ministry to our youth, ministry in the jails and action to end human trafficking. You are vital to the success. Please take time to consider a pledge which can be fulfilled dur-ing the year. Feel free to call our office with your questions.

We begin Lent on Ash Wednesday by acknowl-edging that we have sinned, failed to live the promises we made in baptism, and need to be rec-onciled with God and our community. Throughout Lent, the practice of fasting is encouraged; for example, fasting from daily habits (too much TV) or things considered luxuries (soda and sweets) can make us more attentive to the things that really matter, and aware that there are many people who cannot afford to enjoy such things. To help us on the journey, we dedicate ourselves to prayer, fasting/abstinence, and almsgiving. *Prayer can take many forms; scripture reading, quiet reflective time, attending daily mass, prom-ising a few minutes to God each day on a con-sistent basis are just a few suggestions. *Abstinence: all who are 14 years of age and older are required to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and Fridays during Lent. *Almsgiving: remember those in need. Instead of “giving up” something for Lent, you might con-sider an act of charity for those in need, or finan-cially supporting organizations that serve the poor.

INDULGENCES Receiving God’s mercy in a Jubilee Year. God’s for-giveness is freely given and com-plete, with no strings attached. Here are specific ways Pope Francis has established for the faithful to receive God’s indulgence during this Year of Mercy, December 8, 2015, to November 20, 2016: For those who are able: Make a pilgrimage to the Holy Door. Celebrate the sacraments of the Eucharist or Reconciliation. Within those two sacraments, make a profession of faith and pray for the Holy Father and for his in-tentions for the good of the Church and of the entire world. For those who are sick and unable to visit the Holy Door: Live your illness as a way to be close to Jesus who also suffered in his earthly life. Receive Communion, or partici-pate in the Eucharist or community prayer, even by televised media. For those in prison: Pray in the chapel of your prison, and let God, through your prayer, transform the bars of your cell into a kind of Holy Door, “because the mercy of God is able to transform hearts and is also able to transform bars into an experience of free-dom” (Pope Francis). Whenever you respond to God’s gratuitous gift of mercy by doing one of these acts, you will receive the Jubilee Indulgence for yourself or for your deceased loved ones. Receiving this indulgence also com-mits you to live by mercy so that the fruit of God’s gift to you may flourish. Diana Macalintal, Director of Worship, Diocese of San José [email protected]
