A few words from Peter The Big Game Hunter´s Knife

Tricky but funOf course, you need to do some extra hard

thinking when after a great deal of effort youbegin to design something that is to end up asa hunting knife for big game. The concept for a new design has been there for a few years, but it is still a big step to determine the exactdimensions, and to get there is like crossing amineeld. Without wishing to belittle the pain

and toil that pregnant women go through, Iwould still say that the trouble a knife designer goes through, if not as great, is neverthelesssignicant during the process: misjudging

something by a single millimetre will meanthat an expected success instead becomes a

complete disaster! This means you have to be

able to trust your own judgement. I have been

hunting since 1974, but I started spendingtime out of doors much earlier – the forest, the lakes, the mountains and the sea have in

many ways been my home for 50 years. Sonaturally I have something to lean on when I

create a new knife, and of course it becomes achild of mine and one that I readily embrace.

The power of the media

There were times in my home country when aperson was considered a better hunter if thelength of the blade was no more than 7.5 cm,and hunting magazines did not hesitate to join

in. Through the power of the media, all hunterswere suddenly supposed to carry short-bladedknives so as not to be different. OK, a short

knife blade functions in most situations whenone is cleaning prey, but in all honesty – isn’t itmore a question of knowing where to place theedge? Look at an experienced butcher and

you will soon notice a knife blade that is 13cm or longer. What conclusions can we drawfrom this?

However, the blade length is not to do with

right or wrong – the main thing is that you arehappy with the knife, that it does a good job,

feels safe, is easy to clean, it keeps an edgewell and in addition that it can be used for several different tasks.

Big game knifeThe Professional Hunter’s Knife (PHK) is in my

opinion one of the world’s best hunting knives

for big game, in which function, safety andhygiene are paramount. The blade’s specialupsweep drop-point gives a long aying

curve without making it look wide or clumsy. The rust-resistant laminate powder steel 3Ggives a blade that is strong and which keeps

an edge well. The handle in tough Thermorunand a stainless nger guard gives a safe,

comfortable grip regardless of the conditions. There is perhaps no better hunting knife for big game.

Zytel sheath

The new injection moulded zytel sheath offers

a compact, strong and secure combinationof properties expected to make it extremely

attractive to all users.

25th anniversaryThis catalogue marks the 25th anniversary of

our company, something which we nd highly

pleasing. The company was registered on 8February 1984 and has since then grownin size and strength. In the rst years, the

company imported and sold products fromthe most well-known manufacturers in Europeand the USA. The unique knife cataloguefrom 1985 established the company on boththe Swedish and the Nordic market.

Enquiry from the Swedish Defence Materiel

Administration

Back in 1987, the company received an

enquiry from FMV, the Swedish DefenceMateriel Administration, concerning a newsurvival knife for aircraft pilots in the SwedishArmed Forces. Initially, large numbers of sheath knives and folding knives from what

were then the world’s leading manufacturerswere tested, but sadly all with the same poor results - they did not stand up to the strain or they were too dangerous, too cold in winter or had other faults.

New philosophy

In that situation, the company started itsown investigation which resulted in a newphilosophy for the construction of survival

knives. Based on the investigation, Mod. F1

was developed, and in August 1995 the rst

shipment went to the Swedish Air Force.

The world’s most modern knifeEight years may seem a long time to develop

a knife, but the result was an edged implementwhich to this day is considered the world’smost modern of its type. T he long development

period was also a consequence of the time ittook to introduce a new, considerably moreadvanced, and much more expensive knife

concept than military personnel had seen thusfar. Mod. F1 is now an integral part of the JAS39 Gripen ghter aircraft system and sits in the

thigh pocket of every Swedish ghter pilot’ssurvival suit.

Worldwide success

Mod. F1 was a worldwide success, amongother things because it was the rst serial

production sheath knife with a special steelblade. The new philosophy behind Mod. F1 wasapplied in the development of the subsequent

models which today make Fällkniven AB theworld’s leading manufacturer of knives for

hunting and survival. The safe, secure design,

the high technical standard and a relevant

price level has meant that our products are

today sold all over the world.

The Hunter’s Eye

So what is behind this success story, howhas it come about that a micro-enterprise far up at the Arctic Circle, far from the densely

populated areas of the world, can reach themarket with its products as well as it has sofar? I believe it has something to do with my

own experience as a hunter and sher. To

constantly spend time in nature eventually

leads to in-depth knowledge and experience

of how instruments and equipment shouldwork, and this is the basis for the practical

and technical design that characterises thecompany’s knives.

But I do not think that the results are purelymy doing: The latent memory of the mind and

the lower brainstem also store generations of experience as to how a sharp edge should

look to function in nature. I prefer to call thisidea, this view, this experience the Hunter’s

Eye, the sign of good safe function. It meansthat you can trust our products even in

extreme situations, something that it may be

worth remembering when you are looking for equipment to use in nature.

Generation handover

After 25 years in the business, I intend tohand over more and more of the company

operations to my son Eric: He is extremely

knowledgeable about knives and will carry on

the family tradition in the best way. Myself -I hope to be able to spend more time in andaround the forest and perhaps gain inspirationfor more knife designs with the Hunter’s Eyehallmark.

FH9Naturally, folding knives are not quite as

strong as sheath knives, and are more

expensive to manufacture since they

contain several moving parts. Neverthe-less, many prefer a folding knife, mostlybecause of the handy format and itsconsiderably more discreet qualities, especially attractive in an urban envi-ronment. FH9 is in fact a folding knifefor hunting, but we think that more user categories will like its slim design andnatural function. The blade is locked us-ing a distinct front lock and the rigid clipclasps the knife to the pocket lining.

FH9mopOK - we admit that this mother-of-pearl

handled beauty isn’t the classic painttin opener. Nevertheless, we hope that

those who invest in this most beautiful

folding knife will treat themselves to the

luxury of using it day-to-day, because itis a utility knife, albeit an exclusive one.

The blade in stainless laminate powder steel keeps an edge well, and the whole

knife feels robust and well-made. Thethrill of the exceptionally lovely mother-of-pearl mosaic will be difcult to get

over!

HK9

HK9 is a hunting knife for the advanced, expe-rienced hunter who knows where to place theblade on the prey. It is also a good all-roundknife, feels sturdy in the hand, compact in away, easy to use, and stable. It does not ap-pear so, but when using the knife you have

the feel that it is one of the world’s most ad-vanced hunting knives you have in your hand.

If not before, it is noticeable when beginning tocut - the laminate powder steel keeps an edgeunbelievably well.

Fällkniven AB celebrates 25 years in theknife business!

These knives mark our 25th anniversary. We

have put into these models some of our long-

term experience from actively using knives in

the forest and the countryside. We combineour know-how in practical design with classicScandinavian expression, and to this we add

the world’s most advanced steel technology.

The result is a sheath knife and a folding knifewhich are a cut above the rest!

HK9cxWe take pride in our manufacture of exclusive

knives which not only offer an elegant and

beautiful design but are also practical tools. The polished Damascus steel blade witha core of CowryX powder steel is not onlyattractive, it is also strong and keeps an edge

better than any other steel we know of. Wehope therefore that this special version will not

be left in a glass cabinet but that the knife willbe put to use - luxury in practice!

Tre Kronor 5 - de Lux Hunter

The experienced hunter will love t his knife! To

take care of game the knife does not have to

be big, but shaped correctly. The drop-pointblade has the correct shape not to damagemembrane and intestines, as long as youknow where to make the incisions. Three

nger knives are handled like this – whenthe handle is placed in the palm of your handand the ngers are placed over the blade

you will understand how the knife is meantto work. The TK5, with its shorter handle, is

not the ideal wood carving knife but should be

considered as a pure hunting knife. Many tendto like the shorter format, which is why theTK5 has potential to become a very popular

allround knife. The wooden shaft does notneed any special care, but a drop of wood oilor linseed oil every now and t hen won’t hurt.

Tre Kronor 6 – Hunter  If it is one thing a hunter appreciates it is a

knife that stays sharp – like the TK6. Thisblade is made of laminate powder steel, whichcombines both strength and edge retention. The handle is made of checked Thermorunfor safe and hygienic comfort. We believe that

you will never have held a knife before that

is better at retaining its sharpness than thisknife. Once the sharpness is dulled, you usea at, diamond whetstone to restore it, have

a look at our whetstones DC3 and DC4. The

easiest way to care for your knife is to wash itin hot water with some detergent and then let itself dry, before it is put back in the sheath.

Tre Kronor 2

If price and performance are the decidingfactors, then TK2 is the hands-down winner.

The secure, comfortable grip and the powerfulblade, in laminated powder steel, form acombination whose value is unparalleled in

the world. It is a utility knife, which can berelied on to get the job done.

A Swedish knife series in world class Tre Kronor, the Swedish knife series, offers

a highly advanced technological solution

combined with timeless Swedish design. Asthe result of a long development process, we

are the rst company in the world to be able to

offer a laminate knife blade in 3G steel, edgedwith sintered steel, or powder steel. To thisedge steel, we have added resilient, corrosive

resistant steel that stabilizes the hard center. This gives a rigid, strong blade that retains

its edge extremely well. These knives are in

the Swedish minimalist tradition, where formharmonises with function. The result is anedge tool that is easy and exible to handle –

a Swedish knife in world class.

Tre Kronor 1If you want to spoil yourself with a trulybeautiful, technically perfect knife, then theTK1 is the obvious choice as it is simply

breathtaking. The laminate powder steel offersstrength and an edge never previously foundon the world market. Every knife is handmade

by experienced, skilled knife makers, which

makes each knife unique.

New from 2009 - you can choose betweenthree different handle materials: Cocobolo,Ivory Micarta and Maroon Micarta.

Mod. U1

This folding knife is a bit special – it

combines modern steel technology with

a hundred year old, folding knife design.

Mod. U1 lacks a blade lock. This means

that, in many countries, it will most likely

be considered as a pocket knife, and

therefore be allowed to be carried in public

places, with the exception for restaurants,

sports arenas and school grounds. The

blade is instead held in place with an

springsteel key, a technique which has

been in use for more than 100 years

and which ensures that the blade does

not fold. The blade is made of laminate

powder steel, our famous 3G-steel, and

this guarantees edge retention beyondthe ordinary. The handle is made from

stainless liners with the sides in beautiful

cocobolo, ocean blue, or ochre yellow,

smooth bone. It is delivered with a slim-

t black cordura sheath. With nail-nicks in

both sides of the blade back, the knife is

completely symmetrical and is as easily

handled by both left-handed and right-

handed users.

Mod. U2

This is the world’s rst folding knife with a

blade of laminate powder steel, the now

well-proven Super Gold Powder Steel,

SGPS. Powder steel is extremely costly

and difcult to work with, and requires

advanced technological knowledge in

combination with experienced knife

makers. The advantage of this steel lies

in its outstanding edge retention: there

is simply nothing to compare today. The

slim handle consists of strong composite

material, which makes the knife light and

pleasant to carry. With nail-nicks on both

sides, the knife is completely symmetrical

and is as easy to use for both right-

handers and lefthanders. The traditional

lockback function offers no unpleasant

surprises, but locks the blade in its open

position with a distinct reliable click.

Mod. P and P/3G

Many are won over by the simple

but advanced design, and the size is

manifestly just right for both hunters and

anglers. The knife is easy to clean, since

it is open along the back of the handle.

The ability to fold the blade both in and

out with one hand is a detail as practical

as it is smart, and the tight liner-lock

function feels secure. The drop-point

shaped blade is manufactured in rust

resistant special steel (VG10), which

means that it retains its sharpness well.

We also offer a few luxurious models with

a blade in laminate powder steel (3G) and

handle in cocobolo, ocean blue, or ochre

yellow, smooth bone from free range,Highland cattle. All models come with a

black Cordura sheath, which attaches to

the belt.

In some countries it is not permitted tobear a folding knife in public place if theknife is fast-opening, i.e. provided with a

hole in or a stud on the blade. For thatreason we offer model P and P3G with aclassic blade groove; they have an “n” in

their designation.

The PXL is a modern, slightly bigger fold-ing knife for day-to-day use. The stain-less, adjustable blade is manufactured in

laminate powder steel (3G) which meansthat it retains an edge extremely well.

The handle is made of stainless steel andMicarta, but different types of mountingsmay be introduced in the future. The bladelock is of the liner-lock type: You can open

and close the knife with one hand. ThePXL is offered with a strong, removable

clip which allows quick and comfortableaccess to the knife. Note that this foldingknife is a precision-assembled, extremely

sharp tool and should be use with care.In some countries it is not permitted tobear a folding knife in a public place if theknife is fast-opening, i.e. provided with a

hole in or a stud on the blade. For that rea-son we offer the PXL with a classic bladegroove; it has an “n” in its designation

Caring for the knife

A folding knife can naturally never be as

strong as a sheath knife, since it is builtwith a number of moving parts. If you

subject the folding knife to heavy use, itinvariably leads to a loose blade, and no

guarantee covers this.

A modern folding knife should be regularlycleaned with warm water and mild wash-ing-up liquid. Oil and grease should beavoided as far as possible, since today’s

knives have self-lubricating bearings.

Grease etc. contracts dust and dirt andincrease wear rather than reducing it.The easiest way to sharpen the knife isusing a ne diamond whetstone and toachieve the last razor sharp edge, use

a ceramic whetstone. See our DC3 and

DC4 whetstones.

GuaranteeThe two-year guarantee covers manufac-turing aws and defects, i.e. faults that

occur during manufacturing and whichare not noticeable until one starts to usethe knife. The guarantee covers normal

use of the knife and becomes invalid if the knife is used incorrectly.

NL1 Thor

Mod. NL1 Thor is an impressive piece, which

leaves no one unmoved. The blade, a massive

one to say the least, in rust resistant laminatesteel expresses raw strength, combined with a

fantastic bite. It is clear to all and sundry thatthis is an item intended solely for specialists,i.e. woodsmen with long experience of using

edged implements. There is no doubting thatthis is a chopper to withstand heavy use; but

for those who learn to handle the knife, it isalso a exible tool that can carry out practically

any job that might be required of a knife.

Magnicent and incredibly beautiful! A trusty

companion!

NL2 OdenTogether with Thor, the one-eyed Oden (or

Woden) was the highest-ranking god in theNorse sagas. He was the ancestor of godsand humans - riding his eight-legged horseSleipner and accompanied by his bearers of knowledge, the two ravens Hugin and Munin,

he was the undisputed ruler of Valhalla. Mod.NL2 Oden is a powerful, versatile knife with

rust resistant blade in our well-known laminateVG10 steel. Its chopping ability is excellent

and the knife is extremely well balanced. Thewellmade leather handle darkens with age, acquiring a beautiful patina the more the k nifeis used.

NL3 NjordNjord was the god of fertility in the Norse

sagas and was of the Vanir clan. He was alsothe god of sailors and sher men, the ruler of

the coasts and shores. Mod NL3 Njord is a

powerful knife, well balanced and a pleasureto use. It is hard to nd a better-looking all-round knife, and its strength, of course, lies inthe laminate VG10 steel.

NL4 Frej

Frej was the god of peace in the Norse sagas,

but also a god of fertility and prosperity. Hewas the king of trolls and elves, beings that

until quite recently were a reality in the oldfarming society. Mod. NL4 Frej is not merely a

beautiful and compact knife - since the bladeis in laminate VG10 steel, the knife is relatively

strong. Frej is a slender, well-balanced knife

of the highest quality, completely handmade, like the larger models. A friend in woods andelds.

NL5 IDUN

In Norse mythology, Idun was the goddessof fertility, and responsible for guarding theapples that ensured the gods eternal youth. To many, she was also a symbol of love and

rebirth, and in a poem, she was referred to asthe lover of the gods (ása leika). Unlike earlier

models in the Northern Lights series, NL5 is alittle rounder and softer in form, and thereforean excellent choice for a hunting knife. The

straight, fairly generous grip in leather gives

complete control over the powerful blade in

laminate VG10 steel, and makes the knife atool as attractive as it is effective in the hands

of the experienced hunter.

NL5cx IDUN

It is our pleasure to present one of the world’smost advanced hunting knives – Mod. NL5cx

Idun, with a blade in Cowry X Damascus steel.

This is probably the world’s best edge steel,in all categories, and denitely one of the

most exclusive blades ever made. The edge

comprises a powder steel with the followingextreme content: C 3%, Cr 20%, Mo 1%, V

0.3% and iron to 100%. Its hardness is noless than 64 HRC! The sides consist of rust

resistant, 120-layer Damascus steel, and withthe edge of powdered steel, we have formed

a blade, which in its beauty and strength is noless than world class. The ttings are of solidnickel silver, while the rest of the handle is in

stacked leather and bre washers. The knife

is produced as a very limited edition, which

means that demand is sometimes greater than supply. The knife is an excellent tool for

all, but in all probability, most customers willacquire it for its exclusive collectability.

Hunting Knives

WM1 - The little favourite!

In most cases, a 7 cm long blade issufcient for hunting, especially if it is

3 mm thick and convex ground so that

it is both strong and sharp. Initially, wethought that WM1 would be a specialknife for hunters of small game, but as itturned out many other types of customer were interested in this model. Then, when we offered a plastic sheath, whichallowed the knife to be carried round theneck or in any pocket, it became a totalsuccess! Mountain climbers, canoeists, mountain bikers, hikers - everyone saw

how incredibly smart it is to carry theknife round the neck, easy to see, andimmediately accessible. The same sheathcan be just as easily attached to the belt.

If you want considerably improved edgeretention, this handy knife also comeswith a blade in laminate powder steel, called WM1/3G.

H1 - The big game hunter´s dream

Although the material in this knife is high-tech, the design comes from classic NorthScandinavian knife making traditions. The

long skinning curve, in combination with

the elegantly formed tip, make this knifesomething of a big game hunter’s dream- one of the world’s best hunting knives.

The blade ridge is no less than 5 mmthick, but the edge is still sharp and stableenough to cut wood, because it is convexground. The full handle, in checkedThermorun, gives a sure and comfortable

grip. Since the knife lacks a nger-guard,

an advanced knife, such as Mod. H1, is

best suited to experienced hunters or

woodsmen. A moulded plastic sheath inzytel is added. Hunters normally tend to

like knives with extreme edge retentionand, for them, we now have the H1 with

laminate powder steel 3G, the H1/3G.Unbeatable!

Hunting and Survival Knives

Mod. F1 – our rst knife!

It took us eight years to develop the mod.

F1, a knife that is in use today with theSwedish Air Force as a survival knife. The

result from extensive eld-testing, carried

out on hot summer days and ice-coldwinter nights, was an advanced, well-

designed and safe knife, where strengthand modern design go hand-in-hand. Thefact that it is also very well thought of by

the civilian market testies to its incredibleversatility. The combination of resilient,

laminate special steel and sure grip isattractive to most. Many get on very well

with this knife, which over the years has

become something of a signature for our company. Is there a better knife thissize?

F1 Micarta

It is especially exciting to handle a

completely handmade knife, with theenduring knowledge that a skilledcraftsman has put his soul intomanufacturing this particular knife. Theblade continues through the handle atfull breadth, which gives the knife extra

solid weight in the hand. For those after a slightly more exclusive knife, this is

better-looking hunting knife. Comes with

an all black leather sheath.

F1/3G

Many years ago, when we began the de-velopment of our now famous knife series

Tre Kronor, we wanted to test something

new: A completely unknown laminate

powder steel. Our own tests went well, but we also wanted to test the steel onthe open market in order, so to speak, tobe on the safe side. So, we manufactured110 F1-knives using this 3G steel, knives

which were then sold all over the world.

The reactions were, to say the least, posi-tive. And so we could start manufacturingour most exclusive knife series.

Limited edition

What we hadn’t counted on however was

that the market was never going to forget

our bestselling F1 with this super steel -ever since this test series appeared we

have received enquiries from all over

the world whether it is possible to buythe F1/3G. Evidently, the combination

of pleasant design and true super steelwas something people could not get over!

Therefore, to mark our 25th anniversary,

we are now launching a limited series of 1,000 F1/3G knives. They are due to go

on sale in summer 2009. The knife willonly be manufactured with a shiny blade, and one characteristic is the special logo-type with two crowns on either side of theoval which marks the unique edition.

A2 – a strong expeditionary knife

When you are really far from the nearesthabitation, you must be able to trust your equipment. Some items must never fail, and

have got to withstand practically anything.

Mod. A2 is an example of a strong knife that

will never let you down, a knife that withstands

heavy use. The reason for its remarkableperformance is that we use a newly developed

laminate rust resistant steel, where the edgeconsists of our now famous VG10, and wherethe sides are made from resilient 420J2 st eel.The combination of these different types of steel gives a blade that both retains its edgevery well, and is fantastically strong. Since we

ship this knife with a convex edge, it is suitable

for both cutting and chopping. A well-sewnsheath in extra strong ox leather is added. For

expeditions and hard outdoor life, Mod. A2 isa given companion.

A1 - military favourite

This knife has become something of afavourite in military circles, where the need is

for a strong, reliable and safe knife, while atthe same time as heavy, clumsy equipmentis avoided. The civilian world, naturally, has

the same requirements - who does not wanta reliable companion attached to their beltwhen they are going to be out for a week?Despite its size, Mod. A1 is a versatile and

well-balanced concept, and internationallyabout the best money can buy. The 6 mmthick blade, in laminate VG10 steel, is very

strong, and since the knife is provided with a

convex edge, it cuts well even in wood. The

black surface is of Ceracoat 8H for protectionagainst reections and corrosion. Delivered

with a moulded plastic sheath in zytel.

Mod. MC1 - the mine clearance knifeThe development of the Mod. MC1

resulted from an ofcial request from a

NATO country. The knife has been usedin mine clearance since spring 2002. Theway the blade is ground is, in itself, wortha little extra attention - we start with a rawpiece of steel over 6 mm thick, and use a

grindstone with a very large diameter. This

gives a slightly concave prole, which we

nish with convex grinding - by hand! The

result is an edge that is extremely sharp, but also robust. The handle is made outof grip safe Kraton, a material which has

a good stability and is totally insensitive to

solvents, oils and DEET. The tang is of a

broad, protruding type and is visible at the

end of the grip, as in many of our knives. The knife is shipped with a double lockingZytel sheath.

Mod. G1 - Garm Fighter

Mod. G1 is a small, interesting sheathknife for military use. We use advanced

special steel, our now famous VG10, toensure strength and good edge retention. The blade is coated in black Ceracoat

8H to prevent reections and corrosion. The symmetrical handle, in Thermorun, gives the best possible grip. The knife is

shipped with a Zytel sheath that allows, for example, the knife to be carried round

the neck, if this is preferred to having theknife in a pocket.

New quality concept

F2, F3 and F4 are a new concept in high-quality knives intended for opening, butcher -ing and cleaning sh. They are based on the

well shaped, secure F handle, and for it wehave developed three blade shapes, each

adapted to its special purpose. Unlike manyother manufacturers we persist in using reallygood edging steel and even if it leads to prod-ucts that are 5 or 10 times more expensive, wefeel that the concept is right. A cheap dress-ing knife is characterised by poor edge reten-tion, leading to it fairly soon being honed todestruction, while a knife from us can be usedfor decades. Not only does this lead to goodoverall economy, but also offers satisfaction

and safety at work. Naturally, it need not beput away after the hunting, but can also serve

its purpose in the kitchen. The knives are sup -plied with a zytel edge protector. The best, simplest and quickest way to sharpen them iswith a diamond whetstone or diamond sharp-ening steel: see our products DC4 and D12.

Mod. F2This knife has a broad range of use. The short, fairly slender blade works well for lleting, cut -ting and cleaning sh. The short blade makes

the knife something of a favourite in the kitch -en, it cuts anything quickly and precisely.

Mod. F3

I think this is the perfect dressing and skinningknife! The form of the blade is ideal to skinsomewhat larger game and then open it be-fore hanging. Since the edge can be made thinwithout losing in strength, the edge will easilypart the thickest skin, which the user shouldperhaps bear in mind – to avoid mis haps.

Mod. F4

When separating somewhat larger cuts it isa clear advantage to have a longer blade: it

gives a more even, cleaner cut. I myself havetried lleting sh with this knife, and it worked

excellently - the narrow but fairly rigid blade

cuts precisely right through the whole lengthof an eight kilo salmon.

K1 and K2 – light weight, hygienic,sharp!

The most striking thing is how extremely

sharp these knives are and how well they

lie in the hand. There are truly few knives

in the world that can offer such incrediblygood properties at such an attractiveprice. The remarkable fact is that wemanufacture these knives in laminate

VG10 steel since this type of steel isparticularly exclusive, expensive and

difcult to work. Add to this a comfortable, secure, hygienic handle, and you have a

combination that is practically impossibleto beat. For those allergic to nickel, theseknives should be perfect.

Two favourites in the kitchen!Mod. K1 is the classic chef’s knife, withan edge that cuts in both directions. It isa pleasure to handle this unusually lightbut solid knife - it feels like cutting withan extension of your own arm, completely

without effort. This knife is highlyrecommended!Mod. K2 is a must for the modernkitchen! Finely sliced, fresh vegetables

are not only good for our well-being - theyare also eye pleasing and very tast y. Only

the perfectly designed Japanese santokuknife can achieve this.

Combination whetstones

The DC3 and DC4 sharpeners are newly

developed combination whetstones,

where one side (the bright one) is ane diamond whetstone (25 micron),

and the other (the dark one) is a ne

ceramic whetstone. A leather case isincluded. The yellow surface consists of titanium aluminium nitride (TAN) whichconsiderable prolongs the functionallife of the whetstone. We recommend acombination of diamond and ceramic, where the diamond whetstone restoresthe wedge form of the blade edge, andthe ceramic whetstone smoothes theedge to obtain long-term sharpness. Most of the time the sharpness provided

by the diamond whetstone is more thanenough.

D3 and D4

The edge obtained with a diamondwhetstone is often sharp enough – youseldom need razor sharpness. It is even

possible that the micro-serration obtainedwith a diamond whetstone cuts faster than a smooth, razor-sharp edge. For that reason we offer some whetstoneswhose surface comprises solelyindustrial diamonds, coated with titanium-aluminium nitride (TAN). Shipped with abrown leather case.

D3t och D4t

The same whetstone as above, but

instead of a leather case it is shipped withdouble-sided tape which allows you tofasten it where you wish, for example on

our zytel sheaths. The tape (VHB 5925F)is very strong and sticks like cement after

24 hours. In size, the D3t ts the plastic

sheaths for the F1, H1 and S1, while D4tts the plastic sheath for the A1.

Fine sharpening steel

Modell D12 is an oval, ne diamond

sharpening steel for use with kitchenknives. The C12 steel is ceramic and isused after the diamond steel to obtain along-term edge. We recommend thesesteels, since we know they work on alltype of knives, especially knives with

blades of special steel or powder st eel.

How to sharpen the knife

When a knife becomes dull, the wedgeform of the edge has become so roundedthat its original appearance must berestored before the knife can cut again. This can be managed for a long time witha whetstone, but eventually the angle

needs to be reset. This is done with thehelp of a grindstone or belt driven knife-grinder, both water-cooled.

How to use the whetstones:

Lay the blade at on the whetstone, raise

the ridge of the blade by its own thicknessand move the blade in circles or gures

of eight. Alternatively, try cutting thin

slices from the whetstone! Impossible,of course, but now you are holding theknife at the right angle and making theright movement. Start with the diamondwhetstone, and nish with the ceramic

whetstone.

The felt-tip trick

It can be difcult to see where on the edge

the whetstone is working, but the followingtrick can make it much easier. Colour the

edge with a felt-tip pen or similar, and itwill immediately be easier to see exactly

where the sharpening occurs.

Test the sharpness

The best way to test the sharpness is todraw very lightly the edge on a ngernail.

You can feel directly whether the knife is

sharp or not, and it is a fairly safe way totest the sharpness.

Convex edge

Several of our knives have a convex edge

(axe edge). This kind of edge can seem

difcult to sharpen. However, if you use

a handheld diamond whetstone and theabove mentioned felt-tip trick, it is fairly

easy to sharpen the convex edge, but as

with everything, practice makes perfect.

Grinding serviceAfter some years’ active use, the edge

nally becomes so thick that the blade

needs to be re-ground, that is, slimmeddown so that you can continue to use awhetstone or steel on your knife. If youdo not have access to machines or the

know-how to do this, you can send theknife to us for re-grinding. We grind theknife in-house, restoring it practically to

the original form and nish.

Fällkniven AB in brief

We are a genuine family rm, with roots deep in the

soil of Norrbotten (in Sweden). We have hunted and

shed for decades, and know from experience how

a knife should work. The company was founded in1984 and today we are considered one of the world’sforemost knife specialists. We began developing

our own knives in 1987 and this is now the main

operation at Fällkniven AB.

Sheaths

We have paid special attention to manufacturing

sheaths that are as functional as possible, since it isthe sheath that determines the knife’s accessibility.

We are alone in offering several different sheathsfor each model. Generally, you can choose betweenan attractive, well-sewn leather sheath and an all-

weather moulded sheath of super strong zytel. Theleather sheath should not be greased, but treatedwith shoe polish or wax, for example, to make it water

repellent.

Design philosophy

Each knife is the result of years of hard work andtesting. Besides our own tests, we commission LuleåUniversity of Technology to test the breaking strength

of our knives – see our website. This means that you

can rely on our knives, even in extreme situations.

We are the only rm in the world that only uses

exclusive special steel, which assures that our knives

are of the highest level of quality.

Rust-resistant special steel

VG10 is a costly steel that is hard to work, butwhich, when correctly hardened and tempered, gives a blade that is resilient and hard, as well as

practically stainless. Nowadays, we hardly ever use

anything but laminate blades, as these are about20% stronger than a solid blade. With an outer layer

of 420J2 and an edge made of VG10 you get a bladethat is extremely strong and retains its sharpness for

a very long time.

Damascus steel

The art of manufacturing Damascus steel is morethan a thousand years old. By forging together layers of different types of steel, we obtain a bladethat is both beautiful and strong. In the exclusive

sheath knife NL5cx, we have added a powder steel

(Cowry X) thereby combining extreme sharpness

with unusual beauty.

Powder steel

Our experience with laminate powder steel is very

good. Although powder steel is expensive and

difcult to work, we believe that in the future quality

knives will have an edge of powder steel, since no

other material rivals it for edge retention. You ndpowder steel in more than half of our products andthat percentage will increase in the future.

Black blades

The black Teon coating protects the blade from

corrosive substances and eliminates unwanted

reections. Our new Ceracoat 8H coating is as strong

as one could wish for – achieving a long term black

coating on a completely smooth stainless surface, isnot possible, which is why it should not be expected

it to withstand any amount of rough handling. For salt-water environments etc., we recommend knives

with this black surface.

Handle material

The shape, hardness and material of the handleensure the knife’s ergonomic design and sureness of

grip. Wear-resistance, sensitivity to chemicals and

UV light are parameters optimally adapted in order that the knife shall work safely for many years.

Warranty

We offer a two-year guarantee covering material and

manufacturing defects, i.e. defects that arise duringmanufacture but are not discovered until the knife is

in use. A defect is generally discovered within half a

year, not after several years. We repair or replace

the knife. The guarantee is not valid if the knife has

been used incorrectly — the knife is a precisioncutting implement and is not to be used for levering

or prising. Discolouring caused by blood, salt-water or other corrosive substances is not covered by

the guarantee, neither are broken blade points. The sheath will be replaced if faults in the originalmanufacturing are found.

Care instructions — sheath knife

The easiest way to take care of a knife is to keep itclean and dry. Wash it in water with a small amountof washing-up liquid and make sure that it is properlydried afterwards. The blade needs not be oiled or greased, however some handles will acquire a

deeper and more beautiful patina if it is treatedwith wood oil or linseed oil. The sheath does notin fact need any maintenance, but a silicone basedshoe cream or wax will improve the water resistant

properties of the surface. Grease should not be usedsince it makes the leather soft.

Care instructions - folding knife

Since a folding knife is manufactured with several

moving parts, it naturally cannot be as strong as

a sheath knife. If a folding knife is subjected to

heavy-handed treatment, it will invariably result in

a loose blade, with unreliable blade locking. Thisis not covered by the guarantee. A suitable way to

clean a modern folding knife is with water and a littlewashing-up liquid. Oil and grease should be avoided

as far as possible since today’s folding knives

have self-lubricating bearings. Grease and similar

substances attract dust and dirt and increase rather than reduce wear.
