The Government of Catalonia, through the Catalan Institute for the Cultural Companies (ICEC), has now attended Womex for many years, following the fair as it moved through cities such as Berlin, Seville, Copenhagen, Thessaloniki, Cardiff, and, this year, Santiago de Compostela as it’s one of the focal points of the music industry. Our main aim is to help raise the visibility of the music sector in Catalonia through several international actions.

Womex has always been an important part on the international strategies for the promotion of the Catalan music industry and an excellent shop window for world music bands from Catalonia, as well as for a great diversity of companies (management agencies, record labels, publishers, etc.) from our country.

Thirty-five Catalan companies and institutions are attending this edition of Womex to be held in Santiago de Compostela. Most of them are co-exhibitors at the Government of Catalonia – Catalan Music stand (number -1.54, -1.55, -1.56, -1.57, -1.58, -1.59 and -1.60), while Agents 4 Music / Love&Hate Music is at stand -1.19 and Sonde 3 Produccciones, at stand 1.43.

We’d like also to recommend you the official showcase by Calima, one of the most remarkable Catalan bands. This multi-ethnic project, which has stood out since 2007 for

its flamenco fusion with the most innovative of world music, will present its latest release, Lumbre, a work “dedicated to wandering minstrels, nomadic peoples of all races, for their courage, feeling and art as they paint their lives”. Calima will perform on Saturday, October 25, 21:00h, at Teatro Principal You could find his management company, Central Art Process, as one of our co-exhibitors. Calima’s showcase is part of Atlantic Connections, the special focus that Womex devotes to Ibero-American music in all its diversity. We’re proud to be part, alongside the Ajuntament de Barcelona (Barcelona City Council) of the Atlantic Connections stage.

Besides this official showcase, the agency Sonde3 Producciones and MuOM - Barcelona Overtone Singing Choir will offer some performances in Santiago during Womex. COMPANY DESCRIPTIONAlbert Reguant is a veteran journalist specialized in World Music, and a persistent cultural activist in his country, Catalonia. He was born in a working class neighbourhood of Barcelona, Poble Nou. He has continuously participated in the WOMEX, since 1995 in Brussels, this making him the Catalan and Spanish professional that more times has taken part in this conference. Albert has also participated in almost all the conferences or World Music markets that take place in the world. It is a privileged professional of WM, who has worked as creator and director in all three media: TV, radio and magazines. COMPANY DESCRIPTION MuOM, Barcelona Overtone Singing Choir - the only overtone singing ensemble of its kind in Spain, and one of the few in the world. We use many different diaphonic vocal techniques to create overtones, such as the ancient throat singing kargyraa, and khoomei, originating from Tuva, Altai, Kazakhstan and Mongolia; and also Western overtone singing, in a modern way for choir. MuOM has been offering concerts and workshops for the last six years in the principal cities of Spain, Italy, England and Wales, and we are often invited to participate in sacred or spiritual music festivals. She started singing fado in 2000 and so far has published seven albums and one DVD with a live concert performing the Portuguese music genre. Every one of these albums is a universe in itself, where she mixes fado with other musical styles, such as classical, pop or jazz, or where she sings the traditional fado in another language like Spanish or Catalan, her mother tongue. We have been promoting concerts since then, like Carlinhos Brown, Cesaria Evora, Buenavista Social Club, Erykah Badu, Alycia Keys, and recently Charles Aznavour or Hugh Laurie and many others. We have been leaders in Spain promoting World music since 1993. Actually we still promote concerts and we do management for Carlinhos Brown and Sara Pi. We are also in charge of a new festival in Barcelona, Round About Midnight (RAM), at the Coliseum Theatre. Last year were playing at RAM artists such as Keziah Jones, Ayo, Blind Boys of Alabama, Asaf Avidan, Ellian Elias or Richard Bona.
