Once again, the Government of Catalonia attends Womex with 36 Catalan companies

The Government of Catalonia, through the Catalan Institute for the Cultural Companies (ICEC), has now attended Womex for many years, following the fair as it moved through cities such as Seville, Copenhagen, Thessaloniki, Cardiff, Budapest, and, this year once again, Santiago de Compostela, as it’s one of the focal points of the music industry. Our main aim is to help raise the visibility of the music sector in Catalonia through several international actions.

Womex has always been an important part on the international strategies for the promotion of the Catalan music industry and an excellent shop window for World Music bands from Catalonia, as well as for a great diversity of companies (management agencies, record labels, publishers, etc.) from our country.

36 Catalan companies and institutions are attending this edition of Womex to be held in Santiago de Compostela. Most of them are co-exhibitors at the Government of Catalonia – Creative Catalonia stand (number 1.77).

We’d like also to recommend you the official showcases by Maria Arnal and Marcel Bagés, and Nakany Kanté. Their performances have the support of the Government of Catalonia – Creative Catalonia, and the Ajuntament de Barcelona (Barcelona City Council). Through the vocal chords of the Badalona singer Maria Arnal, cradled in the sober skill of the guitarist from Flix (Tarragona) Marcel Bagés, the tradition of the popular song seems newborn: songs of

batre and work, lullabies, fandangos and jotas, traditional vocal music of the Iberian Peninsula, extracted from music archives and libraries that they make their own with ease and respect. Maria Arnal and Marcel Bagés will perform at the Opening Concert, on October 19 at 19:30h, at the Auditorio de Galicia. Nakany Kanté presents her second album, featuring traditional Mandinga music and a brand of Malinke pop. After her surprising first album, Saramaya, Nakany now also sings solo with guitar, sings in the Spanish language and includes Mediterranean sounds with the collaboration of Calima and Macaco. Her lyrics continue to demonstrate her social awareness, describing some of her important personal and tragic experiences. Nakany Kanté will perform at the Atlantic Connections stage (Teatro Principal), on October 21, at 21:00h. The artists who are part of it have in common the passion, research, recreation, study and interpretation of music from the different traditions of the Mediterranean and the Middle East. The olive tree, on the other hand, is precisely one of the most precious and charged with symbolism tree native from the lands where these musical traditions are originated and developed.Labyrinth in Catalunya is an initiative aiming to promote the work of the Labyrinth Musical Workshop of Crete in Catalunya, Spain, as well as all over Europe. It is based in Cardedeu (Barcelona) and works in close collaboration with the original Labyrinth centre based in Greece which was founded in 1982 by Ross Daly and awarded with the European Citizen’s Prize in 2012. Both have the goal of initiating young people into a creative approach to traditional musical idioms from various parts of the world. In Labyrinth we organize seminars and concerts featuring some of the greatest master musicians from all over the world. The first edition of Labyrinth in Catalunya took place in May 2016, and in April 2017 (7-17) is going to be the second.

He was born in a working class neighbourhood of Barcelona, Poble Nou. He has continuously participated in the WOMEX, since 1995 in Brussels, this making him the Catalan and Spanish professional that more times has taken part in this conference. Albert has also participated in almost all the conferences or World Music markets that take place in the world. It is a privileged professional of WM, who has worked as creator and director in all three media: TV, radio and magazines. He currently writes for the USA magazine World Music Central and he’s the director/presenter of the radio program Les rutes del so in the public station Ona de Sants Montjuïc of Barcelona. He’s member of the radio organization World Music Charts Europe and also member of the jury of the award La Opinion A Coruña of Music Folk Galicia.

Sparks’ most recent musical project, El Mar, is a bilingual collaboration with Spanish Flamenco Fusion trio Calamento, and guitar maestro El Rubio. Called “indescribable, incredible” (Deruting), “adventurous, pushing the envelope” (Rolling Stone), and “extremely special, a monster of a record [Top 20 Albums of the Year]” (Orpheo), the album El Mar is a surprising mix of Flamenco, Blues, Rock, Musica Latina and even some Arabic musical influences. The unexpected international success of the Tori Sparks + Calamento collaboration has spawned World Music and Jazz festival dates, as well as tours across Italy, Germany, Portugal, Spain and beyond.
