Dear WOMEX participant,
Welcome to ‘the Dutch face-book’ at WOMEX!
This small booklet provides all the information you need to get in touch with the Dutch at WOMEX 2013. It contains an overview of Dutch musicians, labels, agents, artist-representatives, promoters and journalists present in Cardiff. In short, a practical guide of who’s who and who’s doing what at Womex, including a comprised overview of world music in the Netherlands. Around seventy Dutch professionals are present representing music from the Netherlands and scouting for great music from elsewhere for Dutch venues and festivals. You can find Dutch delegates all over the trade fair. At our Dutch umbrella stand (176+177) you will find information and meet with Dutch delegates. At the service desk we will help you with any questions you might have.
The Dutch presence at WOMEX is a fair indication of what the Netherlands have to offer in terms of music, venues and festivals. The Netherlands harbour a lively world music scene, which has recently been researched in commission of World Music Forum NL. The comprehensive report has been published in the booklet ‘A World of Sounds and Opportunities – World music from the Netherlands’. Music journalist Stan Rijven will
the Dutch face-book at WOMEX4
present the results of this exploratory research at Womex. We welcome you to this presentation on Friday 25th of October 12:00-13:00 in Networking Room 1, Motor Point Arena. Afterwards at 13:15 you are welcome for the Dutch networking lunch at our stand.
Finally we bring your attention to the support of two Dutch rights organizations, Buma Cultuur and SENA, and the Netherlands Embassy in London.
Specifically we like to point out two new grants presented by the Performing Arts Fund NL: international festivals and venues can apply for support for Dutch presentations abroad and for composition commissions. Please come to the Dutch umbrella stand for inquiries about these grants and other supporting activities.
On behalf of all Dutch participants and all supporting organizations, we wish you a fruitful WOMEX and we are looking forward to meet you at the Dutch umbrella stand and at the presentation of World music in the Netherlands!

A WORlD Of SOuNDS & OppORtuNitiESWorld music in the Netherlands
A. Research
The Netherlands are known for its windmills and techno-deejays but what makes its music world spin? Besides hosting the biggest Eurasian festival on the globe and the biggest Caribbean festival on the European continent, Dutch popular music offers a delta full of crossovers, especially with styles related to its former colonies of Indonesia, the Dutch Antilles and Suriname. From the 1980’s on a dynamic world music scene developed with a wide range of artists, festivals, labels and venues. In order to advance and promote Dutch world music both domestically and abroad, World Music Forum NL was founded (2006). Recently it commissioned an exploratory research on the world music industry in the Netherlands. The results were published in ‘A world of sounds & opportunities’. A brief summary of the main conclusions below.
Main conclusions
Despite the impact of todays economic crisis the Dutch world music scene is vital and challenging the future.• It can be divided into the circuit of recognized or formal venues and festivals, and an informal sector with concerts in hotels, party centres, etc. This informal sector concerns practically all migrant groups subdivided into various communities, based on their
Stan RijvenWorld music in the Netherlands8
culture of origin. • Annually around 4,000 world music performances take place in the formal circuit, 2,700 in venues and some 1,250 at festivals. No significant figures are available for the informal circuit, however indications show how performance and audience figures match those of the formal circuit. • Over a million people (total Dutch population = 16,8 million) consider themselves world music aficionados, made up equally of men and women, of varying age groups and from every strata of society. A quarter of them were born outside the Netherlands. • Some 250,000 people attend at least one world music concert or festival a year, one third of these attend two or more performances. • In 2012 world music enthusiasts spend a minimum of 15 million euro on concerts. The purchase of sound carriers (world music-cd’s, paid downloads, dvd’s) values between 14 and 21 million euros. Adding up to at least 30 million euros per year. The turnover of the informal circuit is not included in this figure. • A clear distinction is to be seen between the major and minor pop venues. The 8 large venues (with a capacity of over 1000) all stage world music acts, accounting for 14% of their annual programming. Out of 60 small pop venues, 34 present world music, which accounts for 5% of their programming. • Among non-western immigrants the appreciation of traditional music from one’s own culture is dominant. Young Antilleans and Cape Verdeans prefer reggae, Turkish youth Turkish pop and arabesque.• Crossovers are in fact the present-day world music

trademark. It fosters innovative impulses in jazz, classical and pop. • There is a remarkable development from traditional world music genres to contemporary forms such as world beat, global dance and urban music. It means that world music transcends the inherent cultural and economic boundaries of the genre itself.
B. History
It was not until early 20th century that foreign musical influences actually began to take root. Think of Malando, alias Arie Maasland, whose tango composition Olé Guapa became a worldwide hit. Between 1950 and 1980 political and economic changes led to a massive influx of migrants. Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague transformed into centres for new musical hybrids. After Indonesian independence (1949) tens of thousands emigrated to their former ‘motherland’ introducing sweet kroncong and the much rougher indo-rock which laid the basis for the sixties Nederbeat. Consequently The Hague became the ‘Liverpool of Holland’ but also the beating heart of Indonesian culture. Today its annual Tong Tong Fair is the biggest Eurasian festival on the globe.
During the post-war reconstruction period guest labourers from the Mediterranean and beyond came in great numbers. Rotterdam turned into the musical capital of Cape Verde. In Amsterdam the musical heritage of Portugal, Morocco and Turkey now bear many different fruits. The 1970s saw political refugees arriving from Argentina, Chili and South Africa;

a decade later from Ethiopia and Ghana. After the fall of the Berlin Wall musicians from Eastern Europe revitalized the Dutch music delta. The Netherlands turned out to be fertile breeding ground for innovative Latin and Indian crossovers. After Suriname’s independence (1975) and the shutting down of Shell’s oil refinery on Curaçao (1985), another wave of migration from its former colonies took place. Surinamese and Dutch Antillean musicians enriched the Dutch salsa and jazz scene or developed their own styles. Bands explored the connections between Surinamese kaseko, American jazz and African grooves while others kept their Surinamese roots alive with kawina percussion and winti chanting. The Sárnami geet repertoire recalls the historic link with India, when the Netherlands and England (1873-1916) exchanged 35.000 contract labourers between their erstwhile colonies. Today 150.000 descendants live in Suriname, another 150.000 in The Netherlands. The Dutch Antilles offer unexpected hybrids of Caribbean, European and African styles- such as tumba- and a rich source of musical talent. The past decade new fusions have arisen from this broad musical delta when pop, classical and jazz musicians began collaborating with their new neighbours.

Over 1500 shows have been played, 32 countries have been visited. Whether at a Rock festival like Sziget or Lowlands, or at the legendary Parisian Theatre de la Ville, the acoustic Amsterdam Klezmer Band is sure to please and amaze any audience, at any stage, anywhere. But for the next season they added some extra ingredients. AKB has teamed up with producer Jori Collignon (SKIP&DIE) to create the album “BLITZMASH” that expands the acoustic band sound and explores the sonic possibilities of combining their klezmer with about anything you could think of. Release March 2014. The band will be joined on stage by two drummers/percussionists, and some electronic gadgetry will be added to the set-up, too.
