O castelo de Penela é uma fortaleza medieval de planta irregular e recorte sinuoso, alongada no sentido Norte-Sul aproveitando o escarpado natural, pelo que os panos de muralha têm altura que varia entre 7 e 19 metros.Pertencia à linha defensiva do Mondego na época da Reconquista cristã, seguindo-se ao castelo de Montemor-o-Velho em ordem de grandeza.
