Gary Pehrson talked about the Paul Harris Fellow program and awardedPaul Harris Fellow recipients.

Val explained how our club is part of Rotary International and there are33790 Rotary clubs in existence today. In July of 2007, RotaryInternational was named one of the top corporate partnership clubs. Onebig goal of Rotary International is polio eradication. The Bill and MelindaGates of 2012. If you pledge $500 to Polio Plus, there will be an additional$500 put toward your Paul Harris Fellow, so both will count. Our Rotaryboard has allotted $10000 to go to this goal so members can contribute totheir Paul Harris Fellow and Polio Plus as well. We can also help for the bigpush of Polio Plus on October 24th which has been designated "Polio PlusDay" and our club will let all know what special events will be taking place. There is also the "purple pinkie project" which will go into the schools andall kids who donate to this will get their pinkie painted purple. It is part ofan awareness campaign for Polio Plus that will also be announced in thepapers, radio stations and television.

Gary informed the club that Rotary founder Paul Harris started Rotary in1905. He presented some of our Rotarians with their Paul Harris Fellowawards. First year Paul Harris recipients have given $1000 to theFoundation.

interesting. The most memorable time for her in Japan was her schoolexperience. She was "assigned" to friends who took her around to meet allkinds of people and got her involved in their after school clubs. Herfavorite club was the Tea Ceremony Club. She wasn't so sure about it atfirst, but learned calligraphy, how to arrange flowers and the art andculture behind the Japanese tea ceremony. She said it took severalmonths to become familiar with the language even though she had studiedJapanese prior to her visit. She loved the Japanese food, although theburritos she made for her host family weren't as popular. She alsoexperienced a reverse culture shock because she was so used to the loudand busy way of life in America, whereas the Japanese are very calm andquiet. She had a hard time adjusting when she came back home. She felttheir schools were not so much based on "status", everyone wore uniformsand it seemed all kids were accepted which created a wonderful communityspirit among the student body. She left us with the thought that today isInternational World Day of Peace and that we need to experience insteadof judge. She said that what you may expect is not what is real and whatis real is what you experience. She feels more compassionate to othersbecause of her experience and is very thankful she had the opportunity togo.
