Family of Rotary Fellowship

Intern Callie Coats Recognized

India presses its advantage against polio

With just one case of polio reported in the last 10 months, India is more deter-mined than ever to ensure eradication of the disease. As part of that effort, Rotarians helped administer bivalent oral polio vaccine to more than 35 million children during a Subnational Immunization Day on 13 November. The vaccine is effective against the two remaining types of the virus. Sporting their signature yellow vests and caps, the Rotarians also helped organize free health camps and polio awareness rallies, as well as distribute banners, caps, face masks, comic books, and other items to the children. On 20 November, a team of Rotarians from District 3700 (Korea) served in a health camp in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, which included immunization of children against polio. The camp was organized by Indian Rotarians in cooperation with local health officials and UNICEF. The following day, the team took part in a door-to-door mop-up campaign, administering vaccine to children who otherwise would have missed receiving it. A TV news crew from Korea accompanied the Rotarians throughout their visit, taking the End Polio Now message back to their country. And in Mumbai, Rotary leaders John Germ, chair of Rotary's US$200 Million Challenge Committee; Rotary Foundation Trustee Ashok Mahajan; and RI General Secretary John Hewko joined Indian Rotarians in immunizing children. “This year, there have been just over 500 cases worldwide. The fact that only one of those cases is in India is a tremendous achievement that reflects the determination of the nation's leaders and its citizens to finally rid their country -- and the world -- of this terrible scourge,” Hewko wrote in an article published earlier this month in the Hindu Business Line. India’s next National Immunization Days are scheduled for January and February, and a series of supplementary activities are planned through June. At the same time, intensive surveillance for the wild poliovirus is continuing through-out the country. “Rotary has invested heavily in surveillance in India over the last 12 months,” said Bruce Aylward, the World Health Organization’s assistant director-general for polio eradication and related areas, at a September meeting of Rotary’s International PolioPlus Committee. “That’s the reason we can say with confidence that we think we’re getting close to zero [cases] in India.”

Past President Dr. Suzannah Patterson helped us recognize this semester’s VSU public relations intern Callie Coats during last week’s meeting. Callie joined us at the beginning of the semester and assisted with newspaper articles, new member profiles, articles for the bulletin and the occasional as-needed task during our weekly meetings. She will be graduating this weekend and is currently seeking employment. The intern program was the idea of Past President V.L. Daughtery, Jr. and initiated during his term as club president. Each semester, a VSU student is selected to serve for one semester and receives a stipend for his/her hard work. Thank you Callie and thank you Dr. Patterson for your efforts on behalf of the Rotary Club of Valdosta!

Our program last week was presented by Rotarian Baha Zeidan. Baha is a co-founder of Azalea Health Innovation, Inc. and is a graduate of Valdosta State University. The title of Baha’s program was Social Media: History and Future. From the humble beginnings of email and the internet to the busy world of today’s social media, Baha showed how practically every aspect of our daily lives has the potential to be influenced by it all. In addition to the obvious ways individuals are using technology for personal connections, he also demonstrated ways that businesses and organizations are successfully using these tools. Tweeting, texting and posting are quickly taking the place of emails and advertising for many businesses and organizations. Rotary International has joined the revolution with websites, Twitter, Face Book and LinkedIn accounts. We no longer have to wait for newsletters and magazines to know what our fellow Rotarians are doing around the globe. Within minutes of an event we are able to share stories, photographs and video all with a few strokes on the keyboard of a computer or hand held device. We want to thank Baha for a very informative program. He also received his blue badge during last week’s meeting from President Greg Reid. Baha has been a valuable asset to the club by helping with programs, greeting, and recruiting new members.

Be sure check out our own Rotary website at www.valdostarotary.org, and follow us on Face Book. You can find us under Valdosta Rotary Club. On both sites you can see all the pictures from our meetings and happenings within a couple of hours of the event and find links to our bulletin. It’s a great way to stay in touch especially if you are unable to attend our weekly meeting or events. We also want to thank Claire Lee for bringing our Sunshine Report last week. After introducing our guests for the week and sharing some humor, she did a little begging for happy dollars on behalf of her Georgia Bull Dogs! Anything for a happy Dollar!

You have yet another great opportunity coming up to include your family members in our Rotary fellowship. On Tuesday December 20 we will be hosting our holiday Rotary Unwind & Holiday Party at the Valdosta Country Club from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m.. This will be a family event and will include music and entertainments as well as a visit from Santa Claus. Mark your calendars and make plans to attend even if you can only stop by for a few minutes. Remember, all Rotary Unwind events have been approved by the board as a make up meeting!

The Chamber’s Government Affairs Council will present business issues for the upcoming State Legislative Session to the delegation. Sen. Tim Golden and Reps. Ellis Black, Amy Carter and Jason Shaw will then respond to the issues presented.
