Eddie Montgomery and Troy Gentry may have been born two Kentucky good ol’ boys, but since then they have risen to national rec-ognition as a serious force in country music, starting with their 1999 smash hit, “Hillbilly Shoes.”

The history of the establishment of New Mexico as a state is rife with stories about our relationships with our good buddies to the east and west of us, and, of course, with the good ol’ boys in Washington, D.C.

For instance, did you know that when the surveyor laid his marker too far to the west of the western border of Texas, affecting the eastern border of the Territory of New Mexico, that curious move shafted New Mexico out of more than 500,000 acres of land? This happened right after Texas de-clared, “We be a Republic.”

Then, when Texas joined the Union—and all the good ol’ boys in D.C. really wanted Texas on board—another survey was ordered. And the good ol’ boys said, “That border ‘tween you and New Mexico is fine, just fine.”

And then, when Texas needed more water, it was ordained out of Washington D.C., by God, that the Territory of New Mexico, being a good neighbor, would gift Texas several thousand feet of Pecos River

They don’t call Texas the Lone Star State for nothing. For years, lawmak-ers have remained resolute in not ex-panding legalized gambling within their borders.

Only the Kickapoo Tribe has been allowed to run a gaming operation. Currently, the tribe offers Class Two, bingo-style “slots” at their 100,000-square-foot casino/hotel in Eagle Pass, located about 150 miles southwest of San Antonio. While a bill is in the works that would allow the Kickapoo to negotiate an agree-ment for a full Class Three casino, the chances of that passing—and open-ing up gaming to other tribal entities as a result—is pretty slim.

A conservative Senate, which would shoot down the required amendment to change the state con-stitution, coupled with the fact that cash-rich Texas isn’t hurting for rev-

enue, are two of the main reasons why we won’t be seeing true slots and table games in Texas anytime soon.

As the state continues to balk at le-galizing gambling, others are reaping plenty of rewards. According to the American Gaming Association, ca-sino gambling in 23 states has a $240 billion economic impact annually, while creating 1.7 million jobs and $38 billion in tax revenue.

Wait, it ain’t over: From the mid –1800s to the early part of the 1900s, whenever representatives from the Territory of New Mexico came to Washington seeking statehood, their documents were swept under the rugs of hypocrisy.

Always, when they were in Wash-ington, the New Mexico delegation would face the same barrage of in-sults: “That land out there, in New Mexico, is filled with renegades, outlaws, whores, pimps, heathens, cut-throats from Mexico, and the slums of our big cities. And no one speaks English. What will the Union gain having New Mexico as a state?”

The general consensus about granting statehood? “No way, Jose.”

For years, the curse lived on.The final kick in the groin came

when Arizona, after decades of beg-ging to be split from New Mexico (the Territory of New Mexico had for

years included Arizona) was asked if they wanted to come into the Union at the same time as New Mexico.

The answer from Arizona was a “Not only no, but, hell no!” They then went on to explain they’d rath-er jump into their Grand Canyon than have anything to do with “that bunch.”

And so, New Mexico became a state on January 6, 1912, and Ari-zona became the 48th state to join the Union six weeks later on February 14, Valentine’s Day. Across the land, people smiled and said such sweet things about Arizona becoming a state on Valentine’s Day.

Then, when asked about how poor New Mexico had waited so long, put up with so much grief, trying time and again to become a state, wasn’t that courageous?

Everybody just shrugged and said, “Yeah, whatever . . . ”

But we know better. After all, our state motto isn’t the Land of En-chantment for nothing.

When Jack Russell’s Great White Concert hits the Buffalo Thunder stage on May 21, fans will also get a dose of the soul-ful blues with their hard rock. Formed in 1997, Great White shot to fame with the raucous 1989 hit “Once Bitten, Twice Shy,” which earned the group a Grammy Award nomination and led to a double platinum for the album . . . Twice Shy.

From that point on, they be-came a fixture on rock radio in the 1990s, with hits that includ-ed blues-based “Face The Day,” “Rock Me,” and “Save Your Love,” all of which became international hits and drove a dozen new tracks on their 1999 album Can’t Get There From Here.

Led by original vocalist Jack Russell, Great White enjoyed many ups, as well as a few tragic downs, in the course of their long career. In 2003, the band was playing The Station in West Warwick, Rhode Island, when the club caught on fire, leading to the deaths of 100 people, including guitarist Ty Longley.

Cutting Edge on Facedown CardsYou cannot play a precise game, you

cannot win to the max, without knowing what cards are on the table. Yet, today, in blackjack’s most winnable games—the single- and double-deck games—the cards are dealt face-down, to thwart the advantage players have using cutting-edge methods.

That change came in 1962. Before that, blackjack was almost universally a single-deck game, dealt face up to the very last card. What a great game! Un-fortunately, it no longer exists.

So how have today’s gambling writ-ers responded to this very real setback? They simply ignore it.

That’s not acceptable. You cannot

make informed card moves if you don’t know what’s on the table. You have to know what those face-down cards are. But how do you figure that out?

One writer suggested an overly sim-plistic solution to this problem, which was so imprecise it’s not worth men-tioning. Follow a simplistic solution and you’ll end up with heavy losses. My re-search shows the composition of face-down card types is too varied for that kind of simpleton’s approach—that is, if you want to win.

I spent 10 years coming up with a way to identify the face-down cards before introducing the world’s first highly ac-curate way to do so in Cutting Edge

Blackjack. Las Vegas’s “librarian to gamblers,” Howard Schwartz, gave my book a rave review, saying it makes players all the more “optimistic” of winning. “It’s an important new tool,” he wrote, “giving players vitally impor-tant information necessary to making the best possible card moves.”

My methods, which cover players of all levels, are described in two lengthy chapters. Unfortunately, this subject is not conducive to a short column. How-ever, just pulling your coat on this issue is a wake up call from which you can profit. In other words, you now realize you have some work to do. Happy work that you can take to the bank.

In innovating methods to identify the face-down cards, I first did the world’s first (and probably only) thorough sta-tistical analysis of the face-down cards in play versus each dealer up card. I wanted to know what percentage of the facedown pairs of cards were, for ex-ample, two high cards, a high card with an ace, a low card with an ace, two low cards, etc. I then categorized the various types of situations that would produce different compositions of each type of face-down card pair. (Howard Schwartz noted that I was the first to do this.)

It soon became apparent that a sim-plistic approach would not work with-out a high degree of inaccuracy. In other words, if you have a certain type of face-down hand that’s on the table in the 33–45 percent range in a certain situation, you cannot just ignore it. If you ignore it, you’ll make mistakes in the 33–45 percent range, which makes this type of exercise useless.

That was my biggest challenge: I had to create a novel type of blackjack method that covered the percentages re-ally well.

So, for advantage players, I came up with a rotating estimate method to iden-tify what cards are on the table, face-down—and not difficult to pull off, either. That was just one innovation, which computer tests proved highly ac-curate. For entry-level players, howev-er, I provided a separate chapter full of empowering guidance culled from my research that will prove most profitable.

The point is, you need to learn how to identify the face-down cards. Otherwise you cannot win to the max versus the single- and double-deck games—the most beatable blackjack games you’ll ever play.
