One Band You Don’t Want to Trade-In on By Laura Sykes

They may have only been together for eighteen months, but Singleton country rock band The Trade-Ins are taking the music world by storm. The band is made up of Owen Balman on drums, Tim McLean on rhythm guitar, Andrew Blyth on vocals and Gareth Bowdler on bass guitar. Although all four juggle practise with shift work and busy lives outside their music, they already have gigs scheduled for most of the year.

And what a great year it is already turning out to be! The Trade-Ins have already been named runner up in the Tamworth Country Music Festival’s Coca-Cola Battle of the Bands, a coveted award in country circles. An experience, the group says, that has improved their musical ability.

The group currently specialises in covers however they recorded an original in July last year titled ‘A Lighter Shade of Redneck’, and while they do have plans to record more songs and move onto “bigger and better things”, the group also knows how to keep it real.

“We have fun and that’s what it’s all about,” Blyth says.

The band will be wowing crowds at the Muswellbrook District Workers Club on Friday 26 April, with a free show in the main lounge starting at 8.30pm with their upbeat and interactive style of performing. Come along and enjoy a great night of live music with all your friends!

For more information about The Trade-Ins and their upcoming gigs visit the group’s page on Facebook. Image: The Trade-Ins

First Ever Blue Heeler Film Festival Hailed as Awesome! The inaugural Blue Heeler Film Festival ended on Sunday night, 21 April, at Two Rivers Wines in Denman, with a second screening of the junior and senior short films and the presentation of awards. The winners in each category were:

Junior: The Town of Mussy by Nicholas Butler and Brady Cavanagh,

Senior: Hope at Muswellbrook High by Michael Hutt,

Open: Clayman by Ryan Langford.

The overall winner and Bluey recipient was Robert French for his film, Unreal Wheels.

Congratulations to all the short film entrants – the judges were impressed by the number and quality of entries for the first year of

the festival, and encouraged all filmmakers to submit an entry again next year.

The evening concluded with a free screening of The Castle, which was an obvious favourite of the audience on the night.

Many thanks to everyone who came out to support the festival’s four events, the volunteers, the venue hosts, the filmmakers, and the official sponsors of the 2013 Blue Heeler Film Festival: Bengalla Mining Company, Coal & Allied, Hunter Mutual, Two Rivers, Muswellbrook Race Club, Power FM, Muswellbrook Chronicle, Screen NSW, Muswellbrook Rugby Football Club, Muswellbrook Shire Council

Thank you also to the short film competition judges: Anthony Scully, Alan Doak and Annette Hubber

The festival organisers are immensely pleased with the outcome, grateful to the community for its support, and looking forward to doing it all again next year.

Scone’s Local Artists on ShowBy Sophie Fitzgerald

During Scones Horse Festival celebrations, the Scone Arts and Crafts Incorporated will be holding their 21st Members Exhibition, a fantastic display of works by local painters and potters - all for sale. It all began in August 1992 when Muriel King and Charles Blandford teamed together with a committee of local artists to promote the artistic talent of Scone. Supported furthermore each year by local community members and Horse Festival visitors, the exhibit is on show for two weeks held at the Scone Arts and Crafts Centre in Kingdon Street.

The opening night is on Friday 10 May at 6pm. Scone’s Mayor Michael Johnsen will officially open the exhibition with refreshments and canapés included all for the price of $10. Saturday will see the Horse Parade with Café Al Fresco providing bacon and egg rolls, fresh sandwiches, slices and soft drinks as well as Caffé Mobilita serving freshly brewed coffee - from 8am-2pm.

The exhibition continues until the 19 May, from 10am-4pm daily. It’s a fantastic and encouraging event for the creative folk of Scone, promoting the wide array of talent and creative interpretations. With something for everyone and a large amount of entries due to the strong membership in the town, it’s not too late to enter.

Entries close on the 28 April, so be quick! For entry forms email Michele at [email protected]. It’s a wonderful initiative, so put an hour aside to head to the church over the two weeks to check out the impressive local talent.

Paws Up at the Murrurundi Stockman’s ChallengeBy Sophie Fitzgerald

This coming May, Murrurundi will host the 10th King of the Ranges Stockman’s Challenge and Bush Festival, during which the community initiated program ‘Paws Up’, a highly successful dog high jumping team will perform.

Based in Armidale, the Paws Up program was primarily one of four programs in the ‘BackTrack - Community Solutions to Community Issues’ initiative. Its aim to offer lost youth an opportunity to get back on their feet, gain education, become work ready and help them to prepare and be able to lead happy and productive lives while participating actively in the community.

Since the programs initiation it has developed into a very successful team, holding the Australian record of 9’ 10”. The group travels to events and shows of all sorts across New South Wales and interstate. In doing this the youths involved gain self confidence as they strive for success and gain qualities such as communication, motivation, commitment, reliability and self-discipline through training the border collies and performing to crowds whether it be competition or demonstration.

To see the team in action, be sure to head to Murrurundi’s King of the Ranges festival from the 2 - 5 May at the Rosedale Horse Complex Murrurundi. To purchase tickets, for the full program or for any other information head to kingoftheranges.com.au

Vaulting Competition will be a HighlightBy Sophie Fitzgerald

Equestrian vaulting is a sport growing and gaining momentum throughout Australia, described as a performance sport combining the skill of gymnastics, the art of dance and the athleticism of horse riding, it’s these components that will be on show during the Horse Festival in Scone.Vaulting itself has been a large part of Scones equestrian centre for the past five years, but on the 11 and 12 May over seventy competitors both local and from Queensland will travel to ‘Dunsinane’, a property on Scone’s Turanville Road for the third annual vaulting event.

The competition will commence at 2pm on the 11 May with an impressive parade showcasing the talent as they celebrate the sport they love. From there the competitors, families and spectators head to the beautiful property owned by the Boyle family where the Sydney vaulting group commence the competition in preparation for the NSW titles.

Vaulting is a sport participated in for competition but also fitness and fun with levels varying from beginners to elite. It requires you to gain a trusting and strong partnership with the horse so you can successfully practise and achieve using multiple skills such as endurance, strength and flexibility.

Scones competitors are Georgia Henley, Jarrod Boyle (Scone), Alexandra Moon and Katherine Moon (Sandy Hollow).

Australia has quite an elite and wide squad of vaulters, with associations in all states. This event has been a very successful event over the last few years and continues to set a higher standard each time. It runs from 2-5pm on the Saturday and from 8am-3pm the following day. So in spirit and support of Scones team, head down to Dunsinsane to support the local talent.

For any further enquiries or information contact Robyn Boyle on 0429 947 015 or visit equestrianvaulting.com.au

The Great Nundle Dog RaceBy Sophie Fitzgerald

On Sunday the 5 May Nundle Public School will once again host The Great Nundle Dog Race. Now in its thirty fifth year with all sorts of races, events and entertainment - it’s sure to be a fantastic day. Inviting dogs of all shapes and sizes, the event is one of the most popular on the Nundle calendar, the very first held in 1979 when a few farmers decided to bet on whose dog was the fastest. Back then Nundle was largely a sheep and wool producing area and fast dogs were highly valued. As a result of this the races have since grown into a fair of activities and crowds.

With gates opening at 10am for just a gold coin donation, the races occur throughout the day with ‘The Great Nundle Dog Race’ for working dogs, Mini Mutt House Dog Race, Little Mongrel Invitation Stakes, Junior Dog on a Leash and Stumpy’s Circular Dog Derby, just to name a few.

“The races are great fun to go in”, says Susi Bell, media co-ordinator for the event. “A friend holds your dog at the start line while you retreat to the finish line 100m away,” she explains. “When the start flag drops you shout or whistle as loud as you can to attract your dog to the finish line. Some dogs jump about or sniff each other, but most of them take off up the field. The first dog across the finish line wins.”

If your pooch isn’t quite an athlete the ‘Best Dressed Dog Fashion Parade’ might suit you better, where competitors match outfits with their dolled-up pets. Children will be amused with plenty of activities including face painting, a jumping castle, balloons, show bags and lucky dips. A barbeque lunch, morning and afternoon tea are also available.

The fundraiser attracts families and dog fanatics from not only the local area but the Hunter, Sydney and North Coast regions. Nundle itself is a unique town hidden away, a scenic one hour drive from Scone. The event will no doubt be a huge hit, as have the previous years with plenty to do and see. It’s a great reason to go for a drive to the beautiful area and raise money for Nundle Public School.

Quad Bike Companies – Putting Safety First?By Laura Sykes

You might think four wheels are safer than two, but according to a recent paper on the cost of quad bike fatalities, the answer is no.

The report, published in the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Public Health, has found that costs for fatal quad bike incidents between 2001/2010 were $288 million. “The average cost was $2.3 million, with the highest average being in those aged 25/34 years at $4.2 million,” says Dr Tony Lower, ACAHS Director.

The study, conducted by the University of Sydney, was published alongside a second investigation that has found a surprising link between the quad bike and tobacco industries – companies from both industries do not want you to know how dangerous their product is.

The reports suggest that companies are deliberately misleading the public about the safety of their product, resulting in deaths and injuries that could be prevented through simple awareness.

“With around two-thirds of all deaths involving some kind of quad rollover, it has been estimated that fitting a crush protection device (CPD) has the potential to reduce deaths by up to 40%. If you add the use of all prevention strategies such as not carrying passengers, excluding children from using quads and wearing a helmet, this increases to 70%” says Lower. The paper also reveals that tobacco companies, over the past twenty five years, have not presented any research of their own on the levels of health and safety of their product, although Lower says it would be naive for the public to assume no such research has been undertaken.

“Just like big tobacco the quad manufacturers continue to roll out dubious information and they clearly don’t want a legal precedent set in Australia. The vested interests of the industry are understandably high. Tragically it appears manufacturers are continuing to put profits and fear of litigation, ahead of people’s safety.”
