May 2014 Casino Entertainer 15

Page 16: Casino Entertainer - May 2014

To paraphrase John Denver—and with apologies for appropriation—some cards are diamonds and some cards are stones.

That’s for starters (although we’re not going to get into that in this column), but it is worth men-tioning. Because smart players learn what the rela-tive value each of the 10 different cards has to them (in blackjack we just have the ace, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10s, and the face cards are lumped together as “10s”), especially from the standpoint of what the availability of each in the un-dealt mix says about their likelihood of winning in the next round.

I discovered the correct precise value of each of the cards—for the first time in blackjack history—in my 10-plus years of blackjack research, and I revealed the results in Cutting Edge Blackjack (as well as my resulting Precision Betting Method that came out of it, which is the most precise betting method on the planet).

But today we’re going to look at these stones as a probability lesson. This is another important aspect of blackjack—getting into the “odds”—that a seri-ous blackjack player, one that wants to make money that is, needs to understand.

For now, let’s pretend that instead of cards, the game we’re playing features stones. The values we won’t consider for today’s column, just the two basic colors: white (or clear, as in a diamond) and colored.

How does this relate to blackjack? One thing smart players do is analyze the relative proportion of low to high cards—not as old-fashioned card counters did, but from the standpoint of card strat-egy and the cutting edge tools I’ve invented to pre-dict the likely outcome of events during any given round.

Okay, so let’s say there were just 10 white/clear stones and 10 stones of various dark colors. Your

job right now, before you read any further, is to de-termine:

1) How many stones of each group have been “dealt” on the table?

2) How many stones each group, therefore, remain in the “un-dealt” mix?

I used stones of two different color groups in this example because it should be obvious to you that you can visually come to a quick answer as to what the general reality is here, that is, dark stones of color vastly outnumber those in the white/clear group. Is that not quickly visually clear? (Aha! But that’s true, too, of the low cards and high cards in blackjack. The high cards are dark, the low, whit-ish. A quick visual analysis reveals the general pro-portions.)

Now you can tell me what the probability—the exact likelihood, the exact odds—of a colored stone being dealt next.

The answer to question #1 was: two white/clear and six colored.

The answer to question #2 therefore was: eight white/clear and four colored.

So the answer to my final question above is: the odds are 2-to-1 the next stone “dealt” will be white. Or, seen in another way, there’s a 66 percent proba-bility or likelihood (8 ÷ 12 = 66 percent). That’s one side of what probability is all about, when it comes to modern blackjack strategies. The more you can predict, the more hands you will win and the more money you will make, because we play according to the odds—we act according to what the major-ity likelihood is. Which of course is rarely close to 100 percent; we’re not talking about certainty. That doesn’t exist in blackjack.

More to the point...if you do not want a white stone right now, this is not a great situation for you, is it? See how this pertains to good blackjack?

Camel Rock Ca-sino is proud to pres-ent two of today’s most popular come-dians – Joey ‘Coco’ Diaz and Ari Shaffir - on May 10 at 7pm in the Rock Show-room.

Joey ‘Coco’ Diaz has quickly be-come one of the most sought after actors and comedians in the enter-tainment industry today. Diaz’s start in comedy began while serving a short stint at a correctional facil-ity in Denver, CO in 1988. “Each Wednesday we would watch mov-ies on the projector, but sometimes it would break,” he shares, “so I would get up and do stand up to fill the time.” Learning he had the skills to make an audience laugh, he pur-sued comedy after his release and began performing at an assortment of comedy clubs. You may recog-nize him from his appearances in The Mentalist, Children’s Hospital, My Name is Earl, or General Hos-pital- to name a few. On the film front, Diaz has held roles in The Longest Yard, Spider Man 2, Smi-ley Face, Taxi, and most recently, Grudge Match, among others. His comedy specials in “The Testicle

Testaments” have sold thousands of downloads, and have even made it to the Billboard Top 100. Diaz’s raw style of comedy is highlighted on tele-vision with recur-ring sketch roles

on Stand Up Revolution and Jimmy Kimmel Live.

Stand-up comedian and actor Ari Shaffir describes his comedy as a puppet show, but way filthier and without the puppets. He was a fea-tured stand-up on the HBO comedy series Down and Dirty with Jim Norton and has performed at vari-ous comedy festivals, including the Just for Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal and Toronto, the San Francisco SketchFest. Shaffir’s sa-tirical shorts “The Amazing Rac-ist” for National Lampoon were a viral sensation garnering millions of views. Additionally, Ari has ap-peared on TBS’s Conan, Comedy Central specials and dozens of na-tional commercials.

Come see these two comic misfits at Camel Rock Casino on May 10. See www.camelrockcasino.com for more information.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT ABOUT PENNY SLOTS By John G. Brokopp

What is it about the penny slots that make them such a popular and compelling game?

Is it because they come in a wide variety of for-mats? That they contain an element of nostalgia for Baby Boomers? That they add an exciting, interac-tive dimension that traditional reels slots did not of-fer? Or is it because they are naturally assumed to be more “affordable” than other games?

Whatever the reason—or combination of reasons—this is for sure: Penny slots are huge moneymakers for the casinos, whose “hold” (the casino win) far exceeds that of the higher denomination slot games.

That’s because while gambling neophytes might perceive penny slots as the least expensive to play, these computer-charged games can quickly turn into monsters with voracious appetites for money—as much as $1 to $5 for a single spin.

So know this before you pull out your pennies: when you subject a couple of dollars to a 4.8 to 5.8 percent hold on dollar slots, that’s one thing. When you take that same couple of bucks and expose it to an 11.7 to 14.3 percent hold on one-cent play, that’s quite another. No doubt about it, the theoretical value of your gambling dollar is weakened appreciably by the penny games.

So does that mean you should avoid penny shots when you head into the ca-sino? Not necessarily. My advice is to play all you want if you’re simply in it to have fun. Only you know what price you’re willing to pay for pure entertain-ment value. But if you start winning, don’t get trapped in what can be an ob-sessive pursuit of bonus rounds. Suc-cessful bonus rounds and the frequency with which they come can quickly turn a $20 buy-in into a hundred dollars, two

hundred, or even more. It can be exhilarating when you win, but those winnings can just as quickly dwindle down into nothing.

Remember, what separates good gamblers from reckless gamblers is knowing when to stop chasing the bonuses, when to cash out for a session profit, and when to stop spending all that money on such a high-volume currency vacuum cleaner.

A GREAT WAY TO SPEND A DAY

Why would a guy spend time and words defending a proposition to people who already agree with him? Shouldn’t he be out there beating over the heads of those who disagree with his position?

Yeah, I suppose so. But, the way I see it, why not give the guys and gals who buy into the real story, true story, and have them preach the gospel of Gam-bling as entertainment, and just how bad-it-isn’t.

The dark side of gambling: About 5% of the adult population is susceptible to become an addict to gambling. That doesn’t mean it’s a sure thing, just susceptible. Actually, just under 2% (1.8%) of the gambling public is addicted.

So, how big is the gambling folk number? Well,

two in five of us — that’s all Americans across these fruited plains—are considered gamblers in that we will visit a casino more than three times in a year. We will, from time to time, also bet on football, basket-ball, baseball, hockey, and soccer games.

And 40% of us will get involved in pools and brackets. Even though most of us don’t know the dif-ference between a filly and a horseshoe, people will put up some money (as little as 50 cents, a half-a-buck) on the Kentucky Derby, The Preakness and the Belmont Stakes.

Yes, we Americans love to gamble. Some say we lead the world in percentage of citizens who wager. That, old friend, is a myth. We are fifth globally. Those mad-cap Australians are tops in putting their money where their mouths are. Second in line come the folks from Singapore, then Finland — Finland? What, are you kidding me? Finland is the land of steam baths, the sauna.

Fourth on the list of gamblers per thousand resi-dents are the folks from New Zealand. I don’t know — must be because of the closeness of their Aussie neighbors. But then, they’ve had a lottery down there for 80 years, and slots — called “pokies” have been a part of New Zealand’s entertainment scene since 1991. The slot trade is controlled by Charitable orga-nizations who generally place the “pokies” in hotels

and bars. Incidentally, there are six casinos in New Zealand and four of them are named “SKY CITY” followed by a city’s name like Auckland or Hamilton.

Then fifth on the list comes the United States with all of its gambling sites. Hundreds of Indian Casi-nos, dozens of race track casinos, and scores of land based, or river boat casinos.

So, are we bad or good? Is gambling bad for us, or good for us? What’s the deal? Look at it this way: Spin a Globe, look at those enlightened countries where gambling is illegal — look.

There’s Iran, Syria, Libya, Saudi Arabia, Red Chi-na, Afghanistan, Pakistan. A point for us, the good guys.

It is said Vienna, Austria is the cleanest city in the world. For God’s sake they vacuum the city parks. That’s vacuum — as in Hoover Vacuums — every day. This is the one city in the world without body odor. It’s lilacs and wisteria, even the dogs bark q-u-i-e-t-l-y. There are two casinos in Vienna, the largest the “Wien” has 184 slots and 21 table games. That’d be a truck stop where I come from. But damn, there’s so much charm, and class, and the jasmine aroma of beautiful women — and single zero roulette, that is a gambler’s dream.

Let me say this in closing, if there isn’t a roulette table in heaven then I ain’t going.

NEW MEXICO MUSIC

www.NMmusicdistributors.com

On the one side: the Oklahoma-based Fort Sill Apache tribe, which claims it had been forced from its ancestral New Mexico lands in 1886 and was now seeking official recognition.

On the other: the State of New Mex-ico, which opposed that recognition on the grounds that the Fort Sill tribe has no tribal members residing on New Mexico lands, nor has it built any infra-structure in the state.

On Monday, April 14, the New Mex-ico Supreme Court sided with the Fort Sill Apache. That the tribe owns 30 acres of land in the southern part of the state and 147 of its members self-identified as New Mexicans and were counted as such in the 2010 U.S. census certainly played a role in that decision. The Fort Sill Apache also own a smoke shop along I-10 between Las Cruces and Deming.

In an official statement opposing the ruling, Enrique Knell, spokesman

for Governor Susana Martinez, said: “The Supreme Court’s ruling ignored the fact that the Fort Sill Apache tribe is not actually located in the state of New Mexico. The ruling will require the state to include Fort Sill in discus-sions on education, health care, water and natural resources, and capital out-lay, even though the tribe has no com-munity or tribal members on its lands in New Mexico.”

The State of New Mexico also op-posed the ruling because in addition to its bid for recognition, the Fort Still tribe is appealing a 2009 ruling by the National Indian Gaming Commission that blocks it from opening a casino. As we have reported in these pages the past several months, the State of New Mex-ico recently rejected a request by the Navajo Nation to expand their casino operations. Request made in March of this year by the Zuni and Jemez tribes are still pending.
