Grocon celebrated the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander personnel to the Parklands Project as well as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, with a number of activities held in conjunction with Reconciliation and NAIDOC Weeks.

Grocon proudly hosted a Reconciliation Breakfast on site to mark the beginning of National Reconciliation Week which ran from 27 May to 3 June. The celebration saw guest speakers the Hon Stirling Hinchliffe, Minister for the Commonwealth Games and former NRL player, Preston Campbell, address more than 60 of our Parklands Project team members.

Guests were also entertained and educated with traditional dance and song stories from Indigenous entertainers.

Parklands Project General Manager, Steven Grimes, said that the event celebrated and built on the respectful relationships shared with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people on the project.

“At Grocon, we are committed to supporting the local community and undertaking practical action that seeks to build relationships and create opportunities for all Australians,” Steven said.

Steven also used the breakfast as an opportunity to officially announce Grocon’s commitment to Reconciliation.

“We are pleased to announce that Grocon is developing a Reconciliation Action Plan, in order to better reflect the relationship that the company seeks with Indigenous Australians, be they members of local communities in which we are working or more broadly the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people,” he said.

Grocon also celebrated NAIDOC Week, which ran from 3 to 10 July, at the Musgrave Park Family fun day on 8 July. Grocon joined project partners Yourtown and the Gold Coast School of Construction, along with a number of other organisations and community members at the family friendly event.

The Urban Development Institute of Australia (UDIA) has recognised Parklands’ outstanding achievements in sustainable design, awarding the project an EnviroDevelopment six leaf accreditation.

The project reached the five leaf milestone in March, and has now added the sixth and final element of water, to its list of sustainability accreditations.

Water sustainability initiatives recognised on the project include the introduction of water sensitive urban design to deliver a healthy riparian ecosystem, selection of water efficient fittings and appliances to reduce water consumption within dwellings as well as collection and storage of building roof water for landscape irrigation.

The Parklands Project, which is one of the largest renewal projects undertaken on the Gold Coast, announced sustainability as one of the core values of the project when it began – and this recognition by UDIA serves as testament to that commitment.

UDIA (Qld) CEO, Marina Vit, said EnviroDevelopment is designed to acknowledge those projects which

demonstrate an outstanding commitment to developing better, more liveable communities.

“Parklands is a shining example of how a project can be designed with sustainability in mind from the outset.”

Parklands Project General Manager, Steven Grimes, said the vision for this project is to create a world class sustainable community that is meaningful, memorable and stands the test of time.

Grocon has partnered with Griffith University, Yourtown and the Gold Coast School of Construction to provide local trainee opportunities and share best practice sustainability practices with students and apprentices.

We are pleased to announce more than $15,000 has now been raised for our community partner Southport Special School.

This important milestone in our partnership was reached through cash donations, funds raised from our on-site canteen, a Mother’s Day raffle and numerous generous cash donations from individuals and businesses working on the Parklands Project.

A cheque was gladly received by Southport Special School’s Principal, David Roger, earlier this month.

David said the school was extremely grateful for the support it has received.

“We are thrilled to have Grocon and their suppliers helping to develop our local community, and we’re very appreciative of their support,” David said.

David said the funds would provide valuable assistance to deliver education facilities for the 200+ special needs students at the Southport Special School from ages 5 to 18 years old.

Parklands Project Assistant Development Manager, Matthew McCabe, said Southport Special School was selected as a partner because of the invaluable work they do in the local community.

“Southport Special School was selected as a key community partner on the project because of the positive work they do for local children with intellectual impairments,” Matthew said.

“It is important for us that the outcomes and collaboration extend beyond the boundaries of the site and that they make a lasting community contribution.”

More than $15,000 raised for Southport Special School

“These funds bring us one step closer to our goal to raise $100,000.”

The partnership aims to raise much needed funds for essential education equipment and services as well as provide in-kind support from project team members, key suppliers and subcontractors.

In addition to the array of fund raising activities on-site the partnership has included a working bee which involved the team painting a number of the school’s facilities.

About Southport Special School:

Southport Special School is one of Queensland’s largest facilities that provides dedicated and tailored education for more than 200 students with disabilities aged from 5 to 18 years old.
