Job Title Asbestos Removal, Demolition / Dismantling – R Pipe Bridge & EA2 Pipe Bridge Location GrowHow (UK) Ltd., Billingham Client GrowHow (UK) Ltd. Location Elementis Chromium LLP CDM Coordinator RVA Consulting Engineers Job Description The works comprised asbestos removal, demolition, dismantling and site clearance of process plant structures, buildings, plant and equipment at Elementis Chromium LLP, Eaglescliffe. The project was divided into 8 work package areas. The duration of works was 12 months. Thompsons commenced works within each package area with the removal of asbestos containing materials (as identified within the projects Major Refurbishment & Demolition Survey). ACMs were removed by asbestos trained and experienced Thompson’s operatives, working under the direct control of our Site Managers. Where required buildings and structures were stripped of fittings and fixtures allowing for their later unrestricted demolition. These arisings will be sorted and partitioned allowing for maximum recycling and minimal disposal to landfill. Several items and plant and equipment were specified for salvage. These structures will be carefully dismantled, recovered and loaded onto our clients transport via mobile crane to allow for safe removal from site. Prior to commencement of each phase of demolition / dismantling Thompsons conducted extensive pre-cleaning, decontamination and recovery of residual product to allow for safe working. A degree of pre-weakening was required to allow for the safe and efficient demolition of several structures. Thompsons made a preference for cold cut techniques. Our appointed Structural Engineer verified all methodology prior to commencement of works. Following completion of works each structure was demolished on an individual basis, with a preference for the use of mechanical cold cutting techniques (demolition specification excavator machines). All scrap was secondary cleaned prior to removal from site to ensure that no contaminants were present. As demolition works progress each package area was cleaned and will be made safe. Demolition arisings were suitably processed on site allowing for the backfill, compaction and grading of hollows to surrounding ground floor slab level, to remove any depressions or trip hazards. These surfaces were then be capped off with 100mm of concrete.

Thompsons commenced works with the removal of asbestos and the soft strip of fittings and fixtures from properties along Ellison Street. Demolitions progressed through the low level structures to the multi-storey car park structure itself. The multi storey car park structure was demolished using Thompsons Komatsu 750 super high reach 360o excavator machine assisted by our Caterpillar 350 high reach machine.

Job Title Eldon Square, Newcastle upon Tyne Client Sir Robert McAlpine Contact Gary Hills Job Description Selected strip out and demolition works at the Eldon Square Scheme 3 development, as part of an ongoing series of developments at the shopping centre which is located within a busy commercial area in Newcastle upon Tyne city centre. The development area totals approximately 16,000m2. Prior to commencement of demolition phased asbestos removal works were conducted to allow for the removal of hazardous materials in accordance with the projects type 3 survey. Each of the former shopping units located on Whitecross Way in Eldon Square and within the Greenmarket areas were then stripped of fixtures and fittings during a soft strip exercise. Materials were sorted, segregated and removed to our recycling centre at Springwell Gateshead. Over 90% of materials were recycled during the project. As the soft strip of the shopping centre progressed the 9 level NCP multi-storey car park that adjoined Whitecross Way was demolished using a Caterpillar 350 high reach 360o excavator machine equipped with concrete pulveriser attachment. Following completion of internal strip out works the Greenmarket area and the Whitecross Way portion of the mall were demolished using the high reach excavator machine, assisted by additional excavator machines which were used for demolition and the handling and processing of hard materials. The Whitecross Way mall adjoined structures with listed facades. Our client installed façade retentions and a combination of hand demolition and carefully machine works were used to progress demolition works up to the facades. All suitable demolition arisings were retained onsite for crushing to make recycled fill materials. Excavation of existing floor slabs and foundations totalling approximately 9,500m3 was undertaken. Overall approximately 15,000m3 of material was produced on site to produce Type 1 sub base for re-use on site.
