The lavish 10” x 12” edition includes a fifth color and 200 illustrations within its 224 pages. The Betancourt volume includes an intimate foreword by Inaugural Poet Richard Blanco, text by Robert Farris Thompson, dean of the History of Art Department Yale University, and an interview by art writer Paul Laster. Betancourt’s distinctive, signature works explore issues of memory through re-examination, fusing together nature, objects and memories in explosive, significant and relevant compositions that challenge established ideas about art. -ON GOING: G O L D, Bass Museum of Art. Presented to celebrate the Bass Museum of Art’s 50th Anniversay, the exhibition G O L D features artworks by 24 international contemporary artists including Carlos Betancourt, Chris Burden, Sylvie Fleury, Jim Hodges, Rudolf Stingel among others who physically or conceptually utilize gold in their expression. ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Artist Carlos Betancourt (b. 1966) was born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and in 1981 he moved to Florida. His artwork is in numerous public collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C., the Miami Art Museum (no

w the Perez Art Museum in Miami, Florida), the San Antonio Museum of Art in Texas, the Bass Museum of Art in Miami Beach, Museo de Arte Ponce in Puerto Rico, the Fort Lauderdale Museum of Art in Florida, the McNay Art Museum in San Antonio, Texas, Palm Springs Art Museum in California, New Orleans Art Museum In Louisisana, the Centro Atlántico de Arte Moderno in the Canary Islands.

Mr. Betancourt’s artwork has been included in multiple solo and group exhibitions, as well as art fairs such as Art Basel and Arco. He is the recipient of numerous awards and grants, including the Florida Department of State Millennium Cultural Recognition Award, a National Endowment for the Arts Grant, and the Miami Beach Arts Council Grant. As well, he has been awarded commissions to create artworks for various Art in Public Places programs. Mr. Betancourt was co-founder of 801 Projects, an arts studio center that provided studio space for visual artists based in Miami, Florida. He works from various locations throughout the year and keeps a studio in El Portal, Florida.
