Several Khutsong families have had toaccept the old Commando Building inCarletonville as their home after theywere moved there by the municipalitybecause their houses collapsed.Residents of Carletonville, staying in

the area of the former Gatsrand Com-mando Building in Oberholzer, havetold theHerald before that they are con-cerned about the building being used tohouse people, as it has been for a num-ber of years. The facility,as one resident pointedout, is an office building, not intended for domesticoccupancy.“When we first moved

here, the municipalitytold us that we will onlyhave to stay in thebuildingfor three months beforewe get a new house. It isnow almost nine yearsthat we have been stayinghere,” one of the peoplestaying in the old Com-mando building, PaulineRamorola, told the He-rald.Ramorola also told ofhowher house, whichwassituated close to theKhutsongWestClinic, wasdamaged due to groundmovement earlier duringthat particular year.“I first started to see cracks outside

my house in the yard. I went to the mu-nicipality to seek help, but by the timethey came, which was only about sixmonths later, my house had alreadystarted to crack. They said itwasunsafethere and we had to move out the next

day. It was a big house with eight anda half rooms and a garage. I still thinkthat if the municipality had moved fas-ter they could have saved my house,” abitter Ramorola told the Herald recent-ly.Another unhappy hostel resident,Nandipha Nkala, has also been stayingwith her family in the hostel for the pastsix years. They were first moved to Blybank af-

ter their house, which was situated inthe same area asRamorola’s, also beca-me unsafe. “At first the municipality

said that we would geta new house in threemonths’ time.Whenweasked them again, noone saidany-thing.Sin-ce we were moved tothe hostel no one evencame to check on us,”Nkala told the Herald.Despite the general

feeling among families, which is not infre-quently expressed ashaving been “dumpedat the hostel”, the livingconditions have deteri-orated. There is no hotwater and the lights inthe building, which ac-cording to the inhabi-tants is “very spooky”,are also not working. As far as the Herald

could determine, otherfamilies are also still staying in the hos-tel. The 14 people, including pensio-ners, who are currently staying in thebuilding have only two toilets. The roofis leaking so badly that the ceiling star-ted to break in several of the formerCommandooffices that are nowusedas

bedrooms. Ramorola, for instance, hadto shove rugs in a gaping hole to the sideof the ceiling inherbedroom.Apparent-ly, the problem is so bad that rats havestarted falling into her room from theaperture. There are also deep cracks insome of the walls and in the passage, another part of the ceiling is hangingdangerously loose. We are very worried about it because

the ceiling can fall at any time; and thechildren are playing here,” Nkala toldthe Herald.According to several of the inhabi-

tants, this move has had a negative im-pact on their lives, including the chil-dren who have only, for instance, thelong, dark passage in which to play andrun, and they have not enough space toinvite friends or relatives.

Owing to the limited capacity forwhich the building can accommodate,Nkala could not host a proper weddingin which she would have wanted herfriends and family to attend.“I really hope that someone will be

able to help us. I am especially worriedabout the old women.“What will happen to the families if

they die beforewe get out of here?” Nka-la pondered aloud. In response to lquestions about this

matter a municipal spokesperson dulyreplied that “Council took a decision toprovide houses to the people involved.A RDP equivalent house will be sup-plied in accordance with the provisionof the Housing Code for EmergencyHousing as soon as funding is availa-ble.”

Polisie slaan groot slag

A group of young people employedat the Merafong City Local Munici-pality as interns are distraught aftertheir contracts were suddenly ter-minated during the past week.According to the youths, they are

part of a group of more than a 100who were given internships at themunicipality as part of a NationalYouth Service (NYS) programme in2013.Each was paid R1 500 to “learn

through doing work” at the munici-pality. Each learner was designateda certain department in which towork.Members of the group said they

were delighted when themunicipali-ty issued them new internship con-tracts in spite of the NYS program-me’s expiration of the scheduled du-ration, which occurred mid-lastyear, after which the interns were re-turned to the departments fromwhich they had previously been allo-cated.Several former interns indicated

that although they started worryingabout the future of their intern-ships, in light of information circu-lating around October last year in

which the municipality was said to bein financial difficulties, the ExecutiveMayor, Maphefo Mogale-Letsie assu-red the group of a successful year. Ac-cording to many interns with whomthe newspaper spoke, the mayor cal-led them to a meeting in the Carleton-ville Sports Centre.“She told us that we do not have to

worry and that the municipality willkeep us on until our contracts are fi-nished at the end of June 2015. We re-ally believed her anddid notworry fur-ther,” some of the interns told the He-rald.Although some interns also alleged

that thismeeting was filmed, no recor-ding of the said meeting reached thenewspaper by printing time. The interns say that they did not ha-

ve any idea what lay in store for themwhen they were called to a meeting on25 February. During this meeting, amunicipal employee told them thattheir contracts had been terminatedand they were no longer employees ofthe municipality.According to a copy of one of the in-

terns’ contract termination letters, their contracts were terminated “as of09 February 2015 due to operationaland financial reasons”.“We really did not expect this as the

mayor had previously promised usthat we do not have to worry. Even thefull-time municipal employees in thedepartments whereweworked did notknow that they were going to end ourcontracts. When we did not arrive for work the

next morning, they called us andasked us where we were and why wehad not taken the transport organisedto take us to work,” several internsconfirmed this report to the newspa-per.According to the interns, they did

not even receive referral letters fromthe municipality as proof of experien-ce for future employers.Apparently they also received no as-

sistance from themunicipality’s YouthCoordinator, who is responsible fordealing with youth related activitiesthroughout the municipality.A community activist, Abe Malefo,

told the Herald on Monday that he hastaken up the plight of the interns andis trying to see how they could be assis-ted legally. At the time the possibility of going

to the CCMA was considered.

The Herald had a published an articleearly in 2014 about an incident thathad occurred in 01 December 2013.

A tragedy had unfolded upon a wo-man and child when they were crossinga yard at the plots in ward 17 Carleton-ville. The woman was from town carry-ing food parcels when two dogs werebarking from the house. There was ayoung man who was standing outsidethe house in the yard, when Grace Jan-tjies attempted to pass but was frighte-ned by the dogs. The young man wentinside the house to call the parents, who came out to call the dogs off andthey returned back into the house. When Grace tried to pass, the dogs ma-

naged to get out of the yard and attac-ked the woman and child.

The dogs were said to be two blackand white “Pitbull Terriers” which area type of breed that is known to be vici-ous as their bite is of a “locked jaw”.One of the dogs bit the child on the faceand as Grace was struggling to fight thedog off her daughter, the other dog bither on the body by the stomache. Theman from the house then came to stopthe dogs which had severely injured a3 year-old Omphetse Jantjies on theface as she was bleeding enormously,Grace was also bleeding and she askedthe man to call the ambulance. Theman then took the victims to the hospi-tal and he allegedly reported to the nur-ses that Grace was employed as a maid

at his house which wascompletely false. Whenshe was at the hospital,Grace suggested thatthe child should betransferred to anotherhospital and a helicop-ter was called to takethe child to Lenmethospital at Lanseria. The child was treatedon the father’s medicalaccount and she was inI.C.U for 9 days as shehad sustained injuriesto the entire face andhead. The child hadbroken jaws, her headhad holes from dog’sfierce biting’s, the left

eye and tongue hadbeen damaged. Omp-

hetse’s life has been in-terrupted by the inju-ries as she is often sickand she must be takento the hospital whereshe was treated whichhas been very costly forthe bread winner of thefamily Karel Jantjies.Since the incident hasoccurred he has to pro-vide medical treatmentfor his daughter andwife who had sustai-ned injuries to her sto-mache, the injuries ha-ve lead to her infertility. The family has beenchallenged with somefinancial difficulties asmother also needs me-dical and Karel is theonly one who is working. “The medicalbills are too much to pay cash and thechild still has to go for an operation”said Karel. Apparently the amount thatKarel still has to pay amounts to moreR20 000 and with the kind of moneythat he earns cannot sustain the familyas they lack to even afford to buy foodand have to depend on handouts fromgenerous people. The Jantjies familycurrently resides at Khutsong ext.4Phase 2, house 3452 and have been at-tending court since 2014 but their casehas been constantly postponed. Theowner of the vicious dogs has allegedlynot assisted the Jantjies in any way sin-ce the terrible incident has occurredbut has been appearing at the court andGrace is still traumatised by what hap-

pened and has to attend counseling. The family visited the Herald on the

12 February and the 3 year-old seemedto have recovered tremendously butstill has to be operated as she is verysensitive and impaired for life, herspeech is also impaired according tothe parents. “We did not expect thechild to live and praying helped us”said Grace. For anyone who is willingto assist the Jantjies you can contactthem on 076-9378-590. The investiga-ting officer of the case Mr. Mashabasaid that the case is still on trial andthe last court date was on the 26 Febru-ary but it was postponed to the 18March, several witnesses have beencalled and the case has not yet been fi-nalized.

Longwait for victimsof ‘pitbull attack’

As a result of the seemingly abrupt can-cellation of the internship contracts atMerafong City Local Municipality lastweek, the newspaper contacted the mu-nicipality for its response.

A municipal spokesperson duly res-ponded, which may be read hereunder, verbatim:— “The Municipality has anumber of internship programmes. Infact, Merafong City is way above the pro-vincial average for the number of lear-ners accommodated in the Municipality.Currently the Municipality is running

Municipal Learnership (117 learners),who were former NYS learners issuedan extended learnership; Gauteng En-terprise Propeller (105 learners), EarlyChildhood Development Programme(83 learners), Indigent Verifying Pro-gramme (28 Learners); MISA MunicipalIntegrated Service Agency (12 Lear-ners); Mahube Construction Program-me (20 learners); Artisan DevelopmentProgramme (5 learners); HIV/Aids FieldWorkers Programme (150 learners);EPWPExtendedPublicWorksProgram-

me (200 learners),National YouthServi-ce Programme (225 learners), to start inApril; and the National Treasury Pro-gramme (6 learners).

Through the actions of the municipa-lity and with the assistance of develop-ment agencies and companies, a total of951 people were and will be assistedwith learnerships in the current financi-al year in the municipality.“In one of theinternship programmes, funded by theNational Youth Service (NYS) the one ye-ar contract of the learners expired in Ju-

ne 2014, which means the NYS stoppedpaying themonthly stipend to these lear-ners from that point in time. The Muni-cipality took a decision to host these le-arners for a further period from the Mu-nicipality’s budget, from 1st July 2014as part of a retention plan to enable fur-ther training and continued experientiallearning. “Further, the aim was to provi-de the learners with the opportunity toapply for positions from the platform ofa learnership programme.

“It is a generally accepted fact that theone issue facing youthwhenapplying forpositions is the experience requirement. When applying for a position from an in-ternship. the applicant has the advanta-ge of having had experience in his or herchosen field. Further, if the applicant ex-celled during the period, the probabilityexists that the supervisor of the appli-cant will issue a positive reference, which is beneficial to the applicant whenapplying for aposition.“Theprogrammewas not specifically budgeted for in thefinancial term 2014/2015 and the Capa-city Building Budget was used to coverthe R1 500 stipend to the 117 retainedlearners. In December 2014 the lear-ners were informed that the availablemoney was nearing depletion. It was do-ne in order to emphasise the urgency forthe learners to use the platform that wascreated for them to find alternative em-ployment. Learnerships as such are notpermanent and the opportunity to gainexperience should be given to more lear-ners awaiting their opportunity.

“During the meeting with the NYS le-arners on the 19th December, it was in-dicated to the learners that after lengthydeliberations to try and find alternativefunding for thecontinuationof the reten-tion programme, it was not possible tosecure any financial grant funding fromexternal donors to ensure the continua-tion of their learnerships. “The aggrie-ved should however note that such pro-grammes are rotational; an intake of le-arners is only for a specific programmeand a specific period. In the case of the117 learners, the municipality has giventhem eight additional months in experi-ence and a platform from which theycould apply for positions.”

‘Municipality is assisting asmany interns as possible’Omphetse and her family are still waiting for the case tobe completed..

A project, currently running in the area, aims to assist those suffering from drugaddiction as well as their familiesthrough various means.

According to Maria Barkel of the WarAgainstDrugsMinistry, theorganisationis ready to make a change in the lives ofdrug-addiction sufferers in the area.Barkel (38) is a former addict andwantsto use her knowledge and experience ofher battle with addiction to help othersthrough its organisation’s Christian-centred method of approach.

“I used ‘acid’, mandrax, dagga, coke, ecstasy and ‘rocks’. I used heroin once, but did not like it. One thing I haven’tused is crystal meth, because it wasn’treadily available during the time I wasa drug user,” tells Barkel, who told herstory of how, after ten years of drug abu-se, she stopped altogether in 2006. Shetellsalsoofhowher life, since that fatefulday, has been one entirely devoted toChrist.

Another resident, Mandy Scheepers, who is also involved in variousChristiancounselling actions in the area, is cur-rently trying to extend the War AgainstDrugs Ministry’s activities in the area.Although theministry, which is a registe-redNon-ProfitOrganisation,hasbeen inoperation for the past six years, and hasalso run government-approved educati-onal programmes in schools, is scarcelyknown among the residents in the area.

Besides the various outreach pro-grammes offered to schools, churchesandcampsasaway to educate youngpe-ople and equip themwith theknowledgeand awareness of the nature of drugsand its dangers, the organisation alsoworks with social workers to assist cur-rent drug users. It distributes a varietyof informative material and other sup-port systems. In addition, for schools inwhich learners have been identified asdrug users, the ministry offers such le-arners a haven and a dedicated supportteam. The expediency of this system inwhich schools may refer such learnersto the ministry is vital since the organi-sation now provides an avenue in thepatternof drugabuse, whichmay conse-quently enable the user to break the cy-cle before it envelopes his or her life.

Ultimately, Barkel aims to help drugusers kick the habit for good.

“I do not want to start a rehab, but ra-ther aday-care centre, as I feel thatusersmust stay in their environmentwhileun-dergoing treatment. In most cases for-mer drug users relapse when they goback to their normal day-to-day lives,”Barkel explained.

Although Barkel manages under a li-mited budget, she has already providedformer addicts with vitamins and othersupplements to help their bodies fightagainst the battle of addiction. She alsohopes that additional actions such ascampaigns as “Adopt an Addict” mayhelp those battling addiction. “I hope togive addicts a new aim and lust for life.If I can kick drug addiction, they cantoo,” she told the newspaper trium-phantly. Peoplewhoneedmore informa-tion, may call Barkel on 082 524 2625.

An open manhole, situated only me-tres from a school, recently led to therescue of another kind.

According to Carletonville resident,Len Kent, who told the newspaperthat he was walking his dog, a BullTerrier calledPrincess, whenhe cameacross a disturbing sight on Tuesday,24 February.

Kent explained that, while walkingpast Wonderfontein High Schoolat about 11:30, his dog sud-denly started acting stran-gely.

“All of a sudden,Princess started bar-king and [led] me to-wards an area nearthe school’s fence,”Kent described.

As they came clo-ser, Kent saw thathis dog was leadinghim to an open man-hole, of which Kenthad never seen in spiteof its location being onehe passes regularly. Insidethe hole was a medium-sized

dog that looked up as they came closer.Owing to a fully-spun spider’s web ho-

vering above the trapped animal, Kentdetermined that the dog must have beenin the hole for a considerable period oftime.Thebottomof theholewas estima-ted by witnesses to measure “severalmetres”. Fortunately for the animal, the-re was a supply of ample water under-ground, which may be attributed to the, estimated, lengthy survival of the ani-mal.

After calling the Carle-tonvilleSPCA,which,

according to Kent,indicated that

they did nothave trans-port availa-ble at the ti-me, he con-tacted AdalEnginee-ring atwhich hisson, Ivan, is

employed.The owner of

thebusiness,An-drewPretorius, im-

mediately instructedIvan and two other employ-

ees, Danny Kruger and James Mosheuto help with the rescue of the trappedanimal. Pretorius also magnanimously

provided a vehicle and other necessa-ry equipment for the mission.

Ivan climbed into the manhole andafter a three or four decided manoeu-vres, exited the manhole, carrying theshaken animal to safety. The dog, byvirtue of summary observation, see-med to have survived unscathed bythe fall and consequent confinement. After joyous patting and attention tothe survivor, the dog almost-casuallytrotted off in thedirection ofCarleton-ville’s Extension 9.

“It looked as if the poor animalcouldhavebeen in themanhole for so-me time as she seemed confusedwhen they gotherout.Luckily shewasnot injured when she fell in. If it werea child, he or she could have been kil-led,” Kent told the Herald.

According to Kent, this manhole isnot the only one in the area surroun-ding the school without a lid.

Many such holes have had the lidsremoved and possibly sold for scrapmetal.

“I am worried that schoolchildrencan fall into the holes. Why scrap me-tal dealers buy the lids, which theyknow are stolen government proper-ty, nooneknows. I just hope themuni-cipality will make a plan to close theholes soonbefore someone is serious-ly injured,” Kent told the newspaperin earnest.

Volgens ander inwoners maak die ter-rein ook soms eers so laat as 09:00 oop.

AresidentofKhutsong is concerned thata drain at her house which is continuallybadly blocked will lead to further, moreserious problems.

A woman who resides in KhutsongExt.2 Oumaki Phogojane has laid hercomplaints to the Herald about the con-dition of her house. She started living inhouse 4920 from the year 1991 withoutany problems and in August 2013 waswhen her nightmares began. The drainstarted being blocked and water wouldflood in the yard, the water even affectsher neighbours because the problem isout of control. She faces difficultieswhen it is flooded because she cannot doher washing, she cannot open doors andwindows because of the bad odor co-ming from the drain. She has made ef-forts to contact the counselor of ward 06JuliaPhushowhoreferredher toMr.Jo-mo Mogale who sent her back to theward counselor. After going back andforth there problem has not being resol-ved. The water is causing the soil to be-come softer and Oumaki is afraid ofsinkholes as there is one that is alreadyforming in her yard. The woman is veryupset about the situation as the sinkho-les will cause more problems for her es-pecially financially. The drainage pro-blem affects three yards in the area andapparently the whole Ext.2 area suffers

from the samedrainage issue. Atruck had beensent by the muni-cipality to pullout the waterfrom 25 Februa-ry but immedia-tely when thetruck leaves thewater startsflooding again. Aneighbor Mrs Li-na Molefewho re-sides at 4919complained thatthe water alsogoes into heryard and has cur-rently affectedher in a bad waythat has causedher an illness.“We can’t enjoy li-fe under such cir-cumstances” said Lina. Mrs Phogojaneexpressed feelings of anger towards thecousellor for not taking any action to-wards the problem. “she has not atten-ded the matter so far” Said Oumaki. TheHerald contacted the counselor whosaid that she was not aware of the pro-blem house 4920 specifically but she isaware of general sewerage problem inExt. 2 and that the issue has been han-

ded over to the MMC of Water and Sani-tation. She also mentioned that there isa truck which has to come and pull outthe blockage from the main blocked pi-pe. An official from the municipality ex-plained that the council is well aware ofthe issue that is affecting the whole Ext.2area and have a programme preparedthat is to be implemented in the near fu-ture to finally resolve the issue perma-

nently.Theproblemis that thereare claypipes in Khutsong which have to be re-moved because they have been dama-ged, this will result to wetlands. A wholenew system of pipelines has to be imple-mented which will connect with the Car-letonville pipelines according to the mu-nicipality. Further information regar-ding the new pipelines and how it willfunction will be published later.

Pregnant wo-men receivedthe opportunityto gather a lot ofinformation du-ring a specialevent last week.

NombuleloVictoria Best(57) a professio-nal nurse at theKhutsong MainClinic hosted anevent aroundpregnancy onFriday 27 Febru-ary.

The clinic wasraising awaren-ess of the beauty as well as how specialpregnancy is and the fact that it needsto be protected.

They were offering advice to thecommunity to consult the clinic assoon as a female finds out about theirpregnancy.

The main ,message that the nursesemphasized was that of “early boo-king” whereby it is best for pregnantwomen who are HIV positive to receivetreatment in the early stages of theirpregnancy to prevent the disease frommoving on to the baby known as “Eli-mination of Mother child Transmissi-on(EMTCT)”.

The clinic also offers informationthat can help for a healthy pregnancysuch as diet, exercising, things thatthey can do and cannot do, the impor-tance of the next of kin to be presentso that they help patients to be dicipli-ned in terms of taking their medicati-on. The clinic also aims to involve thecommunity so that their programmescan become effective in their live’s butthey claim that they are still far fromwinning as ignorance among membersis still taking place. They would likeother stakeholders to participate intheir events such as churches andother existing organizational structu-res. Victoria began in 2012 to workwith pregnancy and she is very passio-nate about helping her community to-

wards building a healthy community. The event takes place annually every

February which is a pregnant womanawareness month. The event involveda guest speaker Dr. Fourie who ad-dressed the crowed regarding the im-portance of breast feeding. She em-phasized that there is a stigma thatHIV positive women should not breastfeed which is a completely false state-ment “the baby is supposed to be tobe breast fed for six months withoutreceiving any other supplements suchas water or anything else because milkhas everything the baby needs” saidDr. Fourie.

“ When feeding the baby water, therecomes a problem of grastro intestinaltract which becomes damaged and itis easy for illness to affect the healthof the baby” further mentioned DoctorFourie. Other speakers where LeratoMokoena and Gugulethu Mule.

Organizations and departmentsthat were present at the event were the“I can” old age Ratanang supportgroup, firefighting department, dentaldepartment and the Ward Based Out-reach Team(W.B.O.T).

The clinic discourages teenage preg-nancy and motivates the youth to to-wards educating themselves. The nextevent will be the child protection awa-reness week and it will be taking placeby the end of March.

The Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality (Dr KKDM), in partnership with the North West Department of Rural, Envi-ronment and Agriculture Development (NW READ) and the Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) have appointedNemai Consulting to develop Phase 2 of the Dr KKDM Environmental Management Framework (EMF). According to theEMF Regulations (Government Notice No. R547 of 18 June 2010), an EMF is a study of the biophysical and socio-culturalsystems of a geographically defined area to reveal where specific activities may best be practiced and to offer perfor-mance standards for maintaining appropriate use of such land. The development of the EMF therefore aims to allow forimproved sustainable development in the District.

As part of Phase 1 of the EMF process, a Status Quo Report and Desired State Report were produced and presented tothe public in April 2013. However, in order to integrate Phase 1 and Phase 2 together, three additional public meetingswill be held to present the Desired State Report. This will allow Interested and Affected Parties (IAPs) to comment on theSensitivity Zones and Environmental Management Zones (EMZs). This information will then inform Phase 2 of the EMFProcess which entails the confirmation of the Sensitivity Evaluation and EMZs as well as the development of Environmen-tal Management Guidelines and the Strategic Environmental Management Plan (SEMP).

RandWater gebruik navorsing vanNWU-doktorsgraadstudent

Me. Annelie Swanepoel, PhDstudent aandie NoordwesUniversiteit en wetenskaplike by Rand Water.

An element that I feel most humanbeings are lacking at this currentmoment. It is not easy to attain “hu-manity” because we live in an agewhere by people have lost touch withthe natural aspect of who we are.The reason things are as they are to-day is because of “heartless” sy-stems of the world that have destroy-ed the foundation of humanitywhich is “love”.

People carry on like they have noemotions and we end up doingthings that do not benefit us as hu-man beings such as hating one ano-ther but we forget that we have beencommanded to “love thy brother asthy would love thy self”. The mea-ning of humanity is to “care” for ano-

ther and it is something that is neces-sary for us to live a normal life and wit-hout that we will never become fullyhuman.

There is a zulu saying that says“umuntu humuntu ngabantu”. It is anAfrican teaching that means a personis a person because of other people butI feel like the true essence of the mea-ning has been underestimated and haseventually out grown people. From myown point of view “humanity” has beendemolished by the modern-day systemof “capatilism” which has disconnec-ted us from our natural sate of being. It is a system which promotes “indivi-sualism” and life is based on “commo-dities”. I personally feel that this sy-stem is not working for the majorityand it was created for some to be “rich”and some to be “poor” which eventual-

ly creates inequality. This way of living simply means that

it is a system operating on the slogan“survival of the fittest” which basicallymeans that if you are not economicallyprepared you will suffer. It is causingmany to become unhappy because ifyou do not have money you cannot doanything or go anywhere, people arestressed all the time and many live alife of worrying because things are notokay. Life has become a burden for ma-ny and this is what leads to communi-ties becoming frustrated because theyare not happy with the way things areand “a hungry man is an angry man”.Without humanity South Africa will ne-ver be a true “rainbow nation”.

We have to return to who truly areas people, we have to learn to live toge-ther. For as long as we are separated

we will ne-ver expe-rience lifeas it wasmeant tobe becau-se peopledo not un-derstandthe truth-ful divini-ty of “hu-manity”.Being human is special and we shouldnot treat our lives as if they areworthless, there is so much that wecan do to serve “humanity” especiallywith our God-given talents. Let us startafresh and work towards restoringourselves as human, let us live, loveand care.

Let us not lose touchof our humanity

On Friday 27 February Carletonville High School held a bible quiz in which nine groups with 55 learnerstook part. The participants enjoyed a supper by candlelight and watched a film before the quiz started. The first two groups, who got 80% and 76%, won a weekend at a lodge at the Vaal River. The Kwaito group, Wes Guz, consitingof six members is keeping the cultureof Kwaito music alive in Khutsong.

Kwaito is an authentic South Africansound that resonates with the town-ship lingo and lifestyle.

The group previously released theirfirst project in 2013 entitled, “Sbekha-

na Kanjani”, which means, “How welook at each other”.

Wes Guz recently hosted a Kwaitopromotional show at Maxhoseng CarWash on15 February. The session wasmeant to promote an upcoming compi-lation of “Rocker Roller” artists whowill be releasing projects in the new fu-ture.

The community responded well to

the performers who were present at theCar Wash.

Wes Guz is planning to keep the spi-rit of Kwaito alive in Mzantsi as theyembrace the township life with songssuch as Manga Manga, Abae Two, LeKwaito, Abasas’ bone and many more, which are featured in their latest pro-jectArtis such as FreshJam(group),Phuma,The Best and Vi-

bration Taylor. Another album is to fol-low after the compilation is releasedand the group plans on touring aroundthe Khutsong location and the rest ofMerafong.

The group feels that kwaito has beenmisrepresented in South Africa andthey aim to bring back the real soundof the “Kasi” vibe, which is the rawtownship flavour they feel is missing.
