Carl Aveni is a partner of the Litigation Department of Carlile
Patchen & Murphy LLP. He joined the fi rm in 2006, after 10
years practicing at large law fi rms in Philadelphia and Columbus.
Carl concentrates his practice on complex commercial disputes and
business torts, including trade secret litigation, fi duciary
litigation, shareholder disputes and professional liability. He
regularly serves as lead trial counsel in all phases of trial,
discovery, motions practice and appellate review.
Carl has successfully argued before the Ohio Supreme Court and
the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, as well
as before trial courts, administrative agencies and appellate
courts throughout Ohio.

PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATIONS & MEMBERSHIPSCarl serves as
Associate Editor of Litigation News, one of the fl agship
publications of the ABA (American Bar Association) Section of
Litigation. He is the Southern Ohio Membership Chair for the
International Association of Defense Counsel, a peer-reviewed,
invitation-only organization of trial lawyers and business
executives across the country and around the globe. Carl also
serves as the Vice-Chair, Programming for both the Trial Techniques
and Tactics Committee and the Business Litigation Committee and
previously served as the Business Litigation committee’s
Vice-Chair, Webinars.
Closer to home, Carl is a longtime member of the Ohio State Bar
Association’s Judicial Administration and Reform Committee. For the
last ten years, he has served on the Judicial Screening Committee
of the Franklin County Democratic Party. Since 2012, Carl has
served on the Steering Committee of “Ohio Protect the Vote,” an
organization aimed at ensuring every citizen’s access to the polls.
He previously served in the Franklin Inn of the American Inn of
Courts. Carl is a longtime member of both the Columbus Bar
Association (CBA) and

the Ohio State Bar Association (OSBA). In 2019, he was appointed
as a member of the Rickenbacker Woods Foundation Board of Trustees.
Carl also co-chairs CPM’s Ethics Committee and serves on the
Associate Committee, having previously served on the Strategic
Planning Committee.
COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT Carl is a member of the Maple Grove United
Methodist Church, where he is Chair of the Investment Committee.
For six years, he was the Den Leader of Den 4, Cub Scout Pack 74,
Simon Kenton Council. He previously served on the Board of
Directors and Executive Committee of the Columbus Speech &
Hearing Center, a non-profi t United Way agency, providing
audiology, speech and language therapy throughout central Ohio.
Carl also is a recurring Judge of the Moot Negotiation Competition,
Moritz College of Law at The Ohio State University and the “We the
People: The Citizen and Constitution” Elementary School Showcase
for the Center for Law-Related Services at the Ohio Supreme
Court.
EDUCATION
Carl received his J.D., cum laude in 1996 from the Boston
University School of Law, where he also served as an Editor of the
Boston University Law Review. He received his undergraduate degree
from The American University, School of International Service, in
1991.
In 2004, Carl was a co-Founder of Caring Paws, an organization
that provided more than 4,000 new and gently used stuff ed animals
to children displaced by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
SPEAKING ENGAGEMENTS AND PUBLICATIONSCarl served as the Course
Designer and Lead Presenter for the Probate Litigation Seminar,
Ohio State Bar Association in 2016, 2015, 2012, 2011, and 2010.
Carl’s work has been published by highly regarded litigation

Defense Counsel Journal, and the IADC Committee Newsletter.
He is also a frequent lecturer on trial tactics and evidentiary
