RDA Funding
This week we were pleased
to be involved in a visit
from Paul Toole and
Graham Hanger as they
presented Bathurst Riding
for the Disabled with
$153,522 for much needed
upgrades to the facilities. It
was great to see our
students show the guests
around, work with the
animals and of course
become TV stars! They
were all wonderful
representatives of Carenne
and they certainly did us
proud! We are also proud
of our many staff who also
volunteer at RDA not only
during the week, but on
weekends and holidays to
make sure the animals are
well cared for and RDA runs
smoothly.
National Day of
Action against
Bullying
We were excited to take
celebration of Harmony
Day. The school was alive
on Thursday with the beats
of many drums! Everyone
loved making as much
noise as possible while still
making a great sound.
part in this important day
last Friday where we
celebrated our friendships
and remembered how
important it is to treat
everyone with respect.
Thank you for all the very
generous donations which
raised $122.75 for Kids
Help Line. We continue to
focus on speaking nicely to
each other in all areas of
Carenne and congratulate
everyone who is working
hard towards their end of
term reward activities for
wonderful playground
behaviour.

Professional Learning
During the day our students
have had a wonderful time
playing drums and percussion
instruments with Josh,
however after school our staff
spent some time with Josh to
learn new and creative
techniques to implement in
the classroom. The feedback
was all very positive, with
everyone leaving the session
thinking about exciting new
ways to engage our students
in every subject through the
use of music.

CLASS T Aimee Sutton (Teacher)
Yvette Smith (SLSO)
Tick tock, tick tock, Class T are learning about clocks! For the last two weeks Class T have been
super clever and have learnt to tell the time to the hour! We have made our own clocks to help
us with reading analogue time.
This term we have also been focusing on letter sounds, sight words, shapes and how we grow and
change. We have started pet therapy and we love visits from the Digger Dogs.
Last Friday Class T took a stand against bullying and we created amazing posters to support the
‘National Day of Action’ against bullying and violence.
‘Before you speak, think and be smart. It’s hard to fix a wrinkled heart!’

number recognition and completing daily fine motor tasks with ‘Busy Jobs’.
Wednesdays continue to be very busy with our Wednesday Morning Workshops in Art and
afternoon lessons are all about the upcoming Commonwealth Games.
On Friday Class Mc took a stand against bullying and we created cut and paste posters advertising
‘Be a Buddy, Not a Bully’ to support National Day of Action against bullying and violence.
This week we are celebrating Harmony Day and participating in music workshops with Rhythm
Village and next week Class Mc will begin making their Easter Hats for the upcoming Easter Hat
Parade.

Stephanie Cupples (SLSO)
Class C have continued to work hard and have had a very busy term. We have been learning all
about the upcoming Commonwealth Games. We have learnt about the events as well as which
athletes to look out for during the Games. We have continued to enjoy completing drawing
activities in art as well as cricket coaching on Tuesdays.
Community access excursions on Thursday are another highlight as well as bike riding at the bike
track on Friday’s.
We wish everyone a wonderful Easter break,

CLASS F
Sue Flude (Teacher)
Emma Rush (SLSO)
Students in Class F have been super healthy. In sport we have enjoyed improving our cricket
skills. Everyone is hitting the ball with more accuracy and a lot of students are participating more
in fielding. On Fridays we have been going to the bike track where Ella, Tyron and Rose are
learning to balance on a 2 wheel bike. In the mornings individual students go for a 10 minute
walk with Miss Linda and every afternoon we finish the day with either dancing or yoga. Kaiden
is enjoying his hydro sessions with Sam on Fridays. Once a week we have boys groups and girls
groups and this term we are discussing healthy body hygiene. We all love having fitness in the
park. This week we finished our ’healthy food chart’ and we are looking forward to a special
outing as a reward. On our ‘healthy food chart’ students get a square coloured in every time they
eat a healthy meal so keep encouraging your child to bring healthy snacks and lunches to school.

CLASS W
Myles Woodward (Teacher)
Wendy Lynch (SLSO)
Class W has come together this term to create a fantastic learning environment in class. All of
the students are consistently trying their best and are producing some fantastic work.
We are continuing to learn about the Commonwealth Games in our HSIE lessons. Our focus has
been on the different events, Australian athletes and past stars in some of the sports. We have
also been looking at our amazing Paralympian's! Our Literacy and Numeracy groups with the
other primary classes at Carenne has been progressing well. It is wonderful to see the students
interacting with a different mix of peers.
Class W has really enjoyed their weekly session with Kylie McDonald during the Dance/Drama
activities. They have now begun investigating different Art/Craft activities with Kerryn Café to
finish off the term. As part of our class program to encourage connection with our community we
will be entering the Waste-2-Art Exhibition again this year with an artwork featuring a sculpture
of ‘Borobi’ the 2018 Commonwealth Games mascot.
We wish everyone a safe and fun-filled Easter weekend!

CLASS M
Clare Moore / Rebekah Ravesi (Teacher)
Juliette van Emmerik / Katherine Porter (SLSO)
Every Tuesday Class M visit Mrs Smith in the school library to listen to a story and
complete literacy and art and craft activities associated with the story. This term, Mrs Smith’s
lessons have focused on authors and the books they have written for children. The students have
explored two books by the same author and learnt about the author’s background. Our last
library session involved the book by the prolific author, Bob Graham. The book, titled “Rose
meets Mr Wintergarten” included a range of characters, two of which were named Rose and
Faith. Class M, including Faith, found this very amusing as Faith has a sister called Rose!
We have also celebrated Ruby’s 13th birthday and have been busy creating unique and colourful
art works for the Easter Parade.

CLASS B
Anne Baskerville / Erin Mouatt (Teacher)
Kym Tattersall (SLSO)
Hi to all our lovely families, Class B has been busy as usual. We have been working on
our “colour of the week”, so far we have made RED planets, BLUE whales, GREEN frogs, YELLOW
suns, ORANGE pumpkins, a big PURPLE octopus, PINK flamingos and this week we are making a
big BROWN bear.
Last week we made a wonderful display for the anti bullying assembly. Our theme was “Class B
shouts out against bullying”. We found some posters and we made them into speech bubbles
attached to our photos.
We have had some fun sensory activities during our Wednesday workshops. Some of the things
we have done are painting with cake mix, making Gelli Baff, playing with shaving cream, bubbles,
cooking cupcakes and experiencing different textures using fabric, balls and other tactile items.
We love having Ms Smith for Library every Monday, she always reads a great story and then we
do a craft activity. Mrs Gavin and her helpers visit our room with some very special visitors from
Pet Therapy on Wednesdays, we met ‘JOJO’ the guinea pig last week he was very cute.

CLASS K

Angie Cranston / Donna Kennedy (SLSO)
Class K have settled into a busy routine. Every week is action packed with activities ranging from
sport to shopping. We have been shopping every week at IGA and have been purchasing items
for cooking on Thursdays. The students of Class K are great helpers on community outings.
Recently Carenne students attended an indoor cricket carnival and PJ participated in this team.
We are very proud of his performance on the day and his great sportsmanship.
Other students in Class K have been participating in a range of activities including tennis, hydro
and technology activities. We are looking forward to the Easter Parade next week and have been
working hard with our art work.

CLASS R
Adam Ryan (Teacher)
Paula Hundy / Mick Phillips (SLSO)
Class R have continued to learn, laugh and work throughout Term 1. We have been learning all
about the human body in science. Did you know, that an adult human body has 206 bones and
over 650 muscles, wow!
Work experience has started again and the Class R boys are doing lots of different things. These
jobs include; peer tutoring in junior classes, helping with the pets during the pet therapy
program, working in the gardens, fixing the bikes, doing inside jobs around the school and
helping out at RDA.
Three boys from the class were lucky enough to compete in the Regional Senior Indoor Cricket
Carnival. They competed very well and had a lot of fun! They even managed to come 3rd place in a
strong field of competitors.
In Agriculture we have begun cultivating our garden beds to get ready for planting some winter
crops. In PDHPE we have been looking at how to make and keep friends. We have learnt that
good communication is a simple but effective skill that contributes to having healthy and long-
lasting friendships.

CLASS S
Peta Sykes (Teacher)
Karina Molenkamp (SLSO)
Class S are enjoying the routine of the classroom and all the special programs in place this year.
The students have enjoyed our focus on eating healthy this term and filling up our apple chart by
eating fruits and vegetables, yoghurts and cheese for recess. We will be celebrating our efforts
with a small excursion to Peace Park this week.
Some of our class got to participate in the indoor cricket competition last week at the Indoor
Basketball Stadium and they did very well. We still have lots of other sporting events coming up
throughout the year including the Athletics Carnival next term. Special mention goes to Benson
who competed in the Swimming Carnival at Dubbo last weekend and is now moving on to
Homebush to represent Carenne. Congratulations Benny!
Class S are excited for the Easter Hat Parade coming up and also looking forward to a well
deserved break. The students should all be very proud of their efforts this term. Well done to all.

CLASS N
Terry Neal (Teacher)
Kathleen Matheson (SLSO)
This term we have been doing lots of work for English and Maths, and have started our
homework program. Thanks to all our wonderful parents and carers who are assisting with this
new program and helping to get it all finished by Friday mornings. We have started our work
experience program and are involved in three different work crews. Some of our children are in
Ms O’Kello, Mrs Kemp and Mr Ryan’s groups while the rest are with us at the canteen program
where we provide nutritious and healthy food for all Carenne students and staff on Wednesdays.
We have achieved a fantastic PBL goal of 50 playground PBL recognition stickers and after prior
negotiation we are off to the Bathurst Ten Pin Bowls for some bowling and lunch next week.
We also hope to go on our excursion to O’Connell, the Lagoon, Chifley Dam and Perthville, as
part of our biomes lessons in geography before the end of the term. Mrs Matheson has been
working well with the students in art to produce the School's Easter Celebrations Parade ‘Bunny
Rabbit’ artwork.

CLASS O
Christine Okello (Teacher)
Di Klavins / Julie Buining (SLSO)
Class O cannot believe it is week 8 already! In the past few weeks of this term, we have been chefs,
scientists, artists and explorers. We prepared a beautiful salad, learnt about Captain Cook’s voyage,
made a model of Earth’s orbit and also learnt about artwork, with specific reference to the
paintings and work of Vincent Van Gogh. Finally yet importantly, Geoff took us to a well-deserved
“exploration” of the Antarctica. On this trip, he shared with us videos and photos of his great trip
that saw him visit the land of penguins, seals and whales.
Thank you Geoff for sharing your experience with us. Maybe one day we will also have a chance to
visit the Antarctica! This week we wish Ethan, Ryan and Kasey a Happy Birthday!

CLASS L
Ros Luther (Teacher)
Melinda Gavin / Mick Phillips (SLSO)
The term is flying by fast with us learning so much. Mrs Sutton has been teaching us about
Vikings and that the houses were called a ‘longhouse’ and were made from grass. They came
from Norway and Sweden. If you come into our room you will see the village being constructed.
We’ve also started Coffee Club for staff on Fridays which we always look forward to. Last Week
Mrs Kemp’s cooking crew made a cookies and cream slice for staff to enjoy. We also celebrated
Dylan’s birthday last week.
We have had a lot of lessons on Respect, speaking nicely and we have earned many points on our
class DOJO award chart. We can’t wait until the end of term class reward of a Picnic at the
Aquatic Centre.

CLASS A
Michael Auld (Teacher)
Donna Kennedy / Julie Buining (SLSO)
On Monday, Class A students were invited to help out at the RDA presentation from the local
member Paul Toole, who has excitedly announced that the Government has granted the RDA
$153,522!
Some of the students were interviewed by WIN News Network, about what they thought of about
the site. Bathurst City Life Magazine also came along and took photos of the students and the
facility. The Western Advocate also came along for the presentation and interviewed the students.
Paul Toole talked about the grant and how it’ll improve accessibility to the site for students and
clients. The students were excited about being interviewed by WIN News, all the students spoke
very well, one of the questions that the reporter asked was “what did we think of RDA?”
Everyone had a good time doing the retake for one part of the news where the students had to
walk towards the camera.
Please visit the WIN News Central West Facebook page to see our interviews.

Sport and Recreation
Terry Neal
Carenne has participated in many different sports this term. We started with whole school sports
— starting with the cricket program from NSW Country Cricket co-ordinators each Tuesday. We
also had a visit from the Sydney Thunder Bus promoting the Big Bash Cricket. Then we had the
Carenne Swimming Carnival at the Bathurst Aquatic Centre for the middle and senior school
students, with some remarkable swimming efforts and a lot of fun. We then had two fun days
competing at the Regional Indoor Swimming Carnival, for both our primary and secondary aged
teams.
Last Friday Benson competed at the WSSA Swimming Trials at Dubbo and it was pleasing to learn
he was a placegetter in all his three events and has qualified to represent Western NSW Region
at the State Championships at Homebush in Week 11.
We will be looking forward to changing our whole school sports in Term 2 — to football (soccer)
as well as starting to organise the School Athletics Carnival. In Term 2 we also have Regional
Indoor Soccer and netball carnivals to attend.
