ASC hosted our 2nd Hospitality Taster Evening and in the spirit of the week being Samo-

an language week – leaders and representatives from the Samoan Community attend-

ed. We had influential leaders from different organisations, church groups, education

professions as well as the Regional Manager for the Ministry of Pacific Island Affairs join

in a night of good food, great company and of course fabulous hospitality. Our guests

were absolutely blown away by the dedication from staff, students and the amazing

hospitality they received. They admire the Manaki and Alofa which is provided for our

student body, and applaud the skills taught and learnt by our students.

As the first Construction intakes of 2014 near their end date, the students and staff at

NZMA’s Trades School – Moa street are well into the development of their sleep outs.

The sleep outs represent the practical and technical skills learnt through the pro-

gramme, which includes ‘levelling’, one of the final aspects of the programme. Senior

Tutor Mark, commends the students for their focus and determination in completing

their practical and theory work, 99% and 90% respectively.

For all interested in a Construction

career, NZMA Trade School is

holding an Open Day on Wednes-

day 2nd July 2014 from 10am –

What is LinkedIn and what does it do???

LinkedIn is the leading online professional directory of individuals and companies and has over 85 million members in more than 200 countries. LinkedIn is a professional networking

website, a bit like Facebook but to make connections with people in your industry.

What to do on LinkedIn???

One of the most important parts of LinkedIn is your profile. That's what you use to connect with people in your network and your profile is how you get found on LinkedIn, because it

contains information about your skills and experience.

How to Use LinkedIn to Find a Job - Or Have a Job Find You

1. Create a Profile. Create a detailed profile on LinkedIn, including employment (current and past), education, industry, and websites.

2. Consider a Photo. You can add a photo (a headshot is recommended to your LinkedIn profile. Note that it must be a small professional photo.

3. Keywords and Skills. Include all your resume keywords and skills in your profile, so your profile will be found.

4. Build Your Network. Connect with other members to build your network and create more career opportunities but remember only connect to people you know and trust or have a business relationship with, no need to go crazy and connect with everyone.

5. Get Recommendations. Recommendations from people you have worked with carry a lot of weight.

6. Search Jobs. Use the job search section to find job listings.

7. Use Answers. The Answers section of LinkedIn is a good way to increase your visibility. Respond to questions, and ask a question if you need information or assistance.

Think of LinkedIn as a Personal Branding platform but remember whatever you do on it, do it right.

Know Your Rights From customer service to sales, retail workers have hard and soft skills that can be

transferred to other jobs in the retail industry or a different sector. When you're

putting together your résumé or preparing for an interview, build upon the skills that

you've gained while working in or studying retail.

Skills gained from working in retail

Self-confidence: Retail involves approaching and helping a variety of people, so you

will build your confidence and feel more comfortable dealing with people in all ave-

nues of your life.

Customer service skills: Retail workers must be responsive to the wants and needs of

customers. They should explain the product options available to customers and make

appropriate recommendations.

People skills: A friendly and outgoing personality is important, because the job re-

quires almost constant interaction with people.

Persistence: A large number of attempted sales may not be successful, so sales work-

ers should not be discouraged easily. They must start each new sales attempt with a

positive attitude.

How big is the hospitality industry in NZ?

The NZ hospitality industry employs around 126,000 people. That’s nearly seven per cent of the workforce, so a career in hospitality is possible across a wide variety of workplaces.

What kind of hospitality places can I work in?

The hospitality industry includes cafés, bars, pubs, clubs and restaurants, catering com-panies, through to hotels, motels, backpackers, hostels, holiday parks, lodges, resorts, halls of residence, fast food outlets as well as sports and social clubs.

What qualities do you need to make it in the hospitality industry??

Hospitality is very much a people business, so good social and communication skills are key; employers are looking for personality and enthusiasm too. A can-do, positive atti-tude is very important, and is always a good base to build hospitality specific skills on.

What will I learn from hospitality??

Skills learnt in hospitality - working with people, teamwork, sales and problem solving - are the foundation skills for any successful career. You will also learn a lot about food, beverages and service. But most of all you will lot a lot about yourself.

NZMA’S NEW CAMPUS TAKES OUT TOP TITLE

IN NZ PROPERTY COUNCIL AWARDS

NZMA’s new Sylvia Park Campus took centre stage at the New Zealand Property

Council’s Rider Levett Bucknall awards on Friday night.

Held at the Viaduct Events Centre, the ceremony celebrates the best of the country’s

property sector. NZMA was amongst the chosen few, earning an Award of Excellence

in the Coffey Education and Arts Property category, competing against big players

such as Victoria University and AUT.

NZMA’s Chief Executive Rosanne Graham was thrilled that NZMA is not only leading

the way in the cookery, hospitality and education sectors, but is also gaining recogni-

tion in the fields of architecture and design.

“This is a wonderful achievement, and really highlights the leading-edge facilities we

offer our cookery and hospitality students,” she said.

The new campus – previously an industrial space – was designed by Matthew God-

ward, from Godward Design Space.

Students declared bankrupt after

their rental property burns down

Four students who were

sharing a flat decided to

go to the pub. The fifth

student stayed behind.

They left a pot on the

stove and fell asleep.

Although they woke

soon after, the fire was

well established and not

able to be put out. 3

minutes later, the stu-

dent watched from the

front lawn as the flat

burned down.

Damage to rental prop-

erty is the responsibility

of the tenant.

All 5 students were

equally liable for the

damages because they

were all named on the

residential tenancy

agreement they signed

when moving into the

house.

If the tenants had per-

sonal liability insurance

the cost to them could

have been $500 rather

than $500,000.

Speak to insurance com-

panies for details on

their policies. For tenan-

cy information visit
