    What are the jobs on a ship?

    The person in charge on a Merchant Shipis know as the Master, or the Captain.

    Under him or her, there are Officers,Petty Officers and Ratings

    officers have responsibility for a widerange of tasks and may control the work ofjunior officers and ratings

    petty officers come between officers andratings

    ratings perform a wide range of technicaland non-technical jobs

    Deck Department

    Deck Officershave responsibility for controlling the navigation the ship

    loading and discharging the cargo

    some other shipboard operations

    Deck ratingshave many tasks such as

    steering the ship operating machinery

    carrying out maintenance tasks

    Master

    addressed as the Captain.

    overall command of the ship and is effectivelyher responsible for the safe navigation andoperation of the ship.

    keeps no regular watches but when the ship isin pilotage or close waters or in particularlybad weather or when conditions dictate wouldclosely oversee the navigation of the ship.

    owner's representative and deals withcharterers, port agents and cargo formalities.

    Holds a Master Unlimited Certificate.

    Chief Officer

    Often known as and addressed as theChief Mate

    is responsible for the day to dayworking of the deck crew and for thestowage, loading, carriage anddischarge of the cargo with particularattention to the ships stability.

    At sea he keeps the morning andevening bridge watches. Holds a Class1 or 2 Certificate.

    Second Officer

    Often known as the Second Mate.Is the ships navigator with a prime

    responsibility for the upkeep of charts

    and passage planning.At sea he keeps the 124 watches and inport shares cargo watches with the Third

    Mate.He is often the ships medical officer.

    Third Officer

    The Third Mate holds a Class 4 (OOWDeck) Certificate and assists both theMate and Second Mate,

    keeps the morning and evening 8-12watches at sea and shares cargowatches with the Second Mate in port.

    He is also responsible for the shipslifesaving and fire-fighting equipment.

    Engine Department

    Engineer Officershave responsibility for: main propulsion systems

    auxiliary machinery in the engine room

    deck machinery like winches and cranes

    Engine ratingshave many tasks such as:

    Chief Engineer Officer

    The Chief Engineer is effectively theships technical manager and is

    responsible for the operation and

    upkeep of all machinery, engineeringsystems and the structural integrity ofthe ship.

    The Chief Engineer holds a Class 1certificate.

    Second Engineer Officer

    The Second Engineer is responsible forthe day to day management of theEngineers and engine-room crew.

    He has a prime responsibility for themain engines as well as spare gear andstores.

    Holds a Class 1 or Class 2 certificate.

    Third Engineer Officer

    The Third Engineer works closely withthe Second Engineer and often hasprime responsibility for the shipselectrical plant (alternators).

    He also assists with any main engineupkeep.

    In the absence of a dedicatedElectrician or Electro-Technical Officerhe would also be responsible for theships 'electrics'.

    Fourth Engineer Officer

    The Fourth Engineer holds a minimumof a Class 4 Engineering Officer of theWatch certificate and assists with all

    aspects of machinery upkeep.

    He is usually responsible for fuellingand daily monitoring of fuel supplies.

    Cadet

    Both Deck & Engineer Cadets follow astructured training programme withacademic studies ashore coupled withpractical experience afloat.

    Whilst onboard they are required tocomplete various assignments towardstheir first 'OOW' Deck or EngineerCertificate and both assist andunderstudy the ships officers in their

    duties.

    ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

    Age between 17 to 21 years old.

    Possess SPM (Grade 1 or 2) or equivalentwith(i) a pass in English Language and

    (ii) a strong credit in Mathematics, Physicsor General Science and(iii) a pass in Bahasa Malaysia (for SPMcandidates)

    Have normal eyesight without aids andnormal colour vision.

    Physically and medically fit.

    The course in three phases

    Phase 1 at Academy -12 months

    Phase 2 at Sea Minimum 12 monthsPhase 3 at Academy preparatory moduleand modular courses (12 months)

    EXAMINATION ANDCERTIFICATION

    Certificate in Nautical Studies on successfulcompletion of Phase 1 training.

    Diploma in Nautical Studies on successful

    completion of phase 3 training (student must havea pass in all subjects from Phase1 to Phase 3).

    Upon completion of required sea service, Cert./Dipholder can sit for Watch keeper (at operation level)Certificate of Competency Oral Examinationconducted by Marine Department.
