In 2016, the world’s most advanced economies continued to show lackluster growth. We’ve seen huge political shakeups - such as the United Kingdom’s decision to leave the European Union - directly impact the global economy and foster uncertainty for the future. But despite these dark times, Talent and Careers rose to the challenge of generating opportunities for IE students around the world.

At IE Business School, we are proud of our achievements. Our dedicated team of industry experts have strengthened the core career content in the program curricula, continued to provide sector-specific career advice for every student and attracted more interest from international recruiters than ever before. As a result, 89% of our 2015-2016 graduates secured a job within three months of graduation, most notably in the technology industry.

In keeping with trends, approximately 38% of the class joined companies in consulting and financial services. However, we saw a dramatic upsurge in placements in the technology industry - 25% compared to 16% last year - as innovations in the sector consistently generate new roles and functions. More students are securing work as marketing/sales professionals than in previous years

with 38% landing jobs, while a growing number accepted a position in consulting (18%) and finance/accounting (16%).

Despite political ambiguity in the region, 42% of our graduates decided to work in Europe and 25% settled in Latin America. We also saw an increase in placements throughout North America and Asia. In terms of career changes, 59% of our students chose to work in a different job function, 34% moved to a new country and 29% decided on both a change in function and country.

These new graduates joined the ranks of more than 55,000 IE alumni based in more than 100 countries in both the public and private sectors. This continued success demonstrates our commitment to limiting time away from the workplace while providing a complete International MBA experience far beyond just academic achievement. It’s our focus on real-world projects and leadership initiatives that attracts big companies like Microsoft, Amazon and Deloitte: industry giants that value candidates with “intrapreneurial” skills and the power to change a company from the inside.

We can’t wait to build on this success in 2017 as we dig deeper to bring out our students’ fullest potential and create value for all types of industries and communities across the globe.

Career management courses are embedded into the IMBA program. Coupled with career advice, these courses help students identify their professional goals and develop a strategy to achieve them.

II. career choIces

The diversity of our student body sees job placements in all types of companies across a wide range of industries, be they multinationals, SMEs, private or public sector. This poses a number of challenges for Talent and Careers but it also allows us to serve a range of recruiters worldwide, making sure they always find a pool of qualified candidates among our students.

For the first year, technology is the number one industry of choice, representing 25% of placements as growing trends in big data, augmented reality and cloud migration continue to generate fresh opportunities for our students. More traditional sectors of financial services and consulting still rank highly, each making up 19% of all placements, while interest in consumer goods has dropped slightly to 10%.

Marketing and sales roles continue to show impressive growth, now making up 38% of all placements compared to 29% the previous year. Consulting and finance/accounting still contribute to the top three, with 18% and 16% respectively.

IE Business School’s commitment to growing businesses on an international level is reflected in the number of students placed in Europe (42%), Latin America (25%) and North America (11%), as well as significant representation in Asia, the Middle East and Africa. This is in no small part thanks to our growing relationships with international recruiters and a more diverse class profile, cultivated by our network of 30 IE representative offices on all continents.

A large number of our students come to IE with the aim of making a change in function or region. MBA’s are a great tool for students who look for changes in their professional career as international exposure can help open opportunities in other areas or other countries. Although in some regions, such as Europe, this is becoming more difficult due to visa regulations.

A large number of companies, organizations and executive search firms come to IE Business School year after year in search of top professionals, attracted by the quality and diversity of our students and graduates.

We partner with companies across all industries and regions to help them identify the talent they need to succeed in today’s complex and competitive business environment, adapting to their needs and recruitment cycles.

Talent and Careers helps companies recruit for all aspects of their business, from junior professionals and middle managers to senior executives. Through on- and off-campus methods, companies acquire talent from both our full-time and part-time programs, as well as our expansive alumni network.

Over 100 companies attended the IE Talent Forum organized on the IE campus and more than 115 offered on-campus presentations. HR representatives from local and international companies had the opportunity to meet our students, leading to interviews and selection processes both on- and off-campus. Other companies chose to conduct on-campus presentations or post their job opportunities on our online job board. Besides making these opportunities available to our students, we urge them to take responsibility in managing their careers and make the most of all the activities we organize to bring them in contact with recruiters at early stages of the MBA.
