With the restructuring of health care in the United States, one of the major changes in patient care has been a shift from subspecialty care to primary care. In addition, cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death and disability in the U.S. As a result, much of the burden of caring for patients with cardiovascular disease will fall on primary care physicians. This meeting is designed to provide an update in the diagnosis and management of cardiovascular disease for primary care providers. At the Cardiology in Primary Care Conference, you will hear from nationally renowned speakers on a wide variety of topics. Areas of focus include stress testing, heart disease in women, lipid-lowering therapy, atrial fibrillation, post-hospital discharge cardiac care, peripheral vascular disease and many others. Case discussions with expert panels will also highlight key concepts in cardiovascular disease. CORE COMPETENCIES Patient Care & Medical Knowledge COURSE OBJECTIVES After attending this meeting, participants should be able to: Utilize the electrocardiogram to better diagnose cardiovascular disease Recognize some of the challenges in assessing cardiovascular risk in women Recognize the targets of lipid-lowering therapy Identify some of the new therapies for atrial fibrillation Understand some of the novel therapies for resistant hypertension Identify the management options for patients with peripheral vascular disease Understand how an ICD works and identify when it may be malfunctioning Better appreciate the challenges of caring for elderly patients with cardiovascular disease Better understand how to manage congestive heart failure in an outpatient setting TARGET AUDIENCE Family Practice, General Practice, Internal Medicine, Cardiology and Cardiovascular physicians. TUITION / CANCELLATION The tuition charges of $595 for physicians and $425 for non-physicians include continental breakfasts, refreshment breaks, luncheons, course syllabus and other amenities involved in a rewarding learning experience. Written cancellations prior to September 12, 2012 will be refunded less a $75 administrative fee. There are no refunds after September 13, 2012. CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDIT The Emory University School of Medicine designates this live activity for a maximum of 17.25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits TM .
