Historical Development
Before 10,000 B.C. nomadic
societies needed to continually
hunt and gather for survival.
Following a successful hunt, tribemembers would walk up to 20
miles to visit and celebrate with a
neighboring tribe.
After the town of Marathon was
invaded in 5th century B.C. a
messenger was sent to Athens to
inform people of the good news. After running the 26 miles to get there the
messenger died. Despite the
controversy surrounding the tale,
many exercises physiology professors
use it to explain the importance of
cool down after aerobic activity.
The first modern
treadmill grew out of
England’s Prison
Reform Act of 1779.Which ordered
prisoners to
establish a servile
work program that
required little
intelligence.
