Today’s Gospel invites us to review our sufferings in Christ’s presence. Which of our sufferings, loneliness, loss, failure, illness, anxiety, frustration, have we not yet brought to Jesus? We bring them to Christ so Christ can pour out his grace on us and transform us to a deeper relationship with Himself precisely through them. Maybe it’s time to do that through the Sacrament of Reconciliation that we will celebrate this Sunday immediately after the 11am Mass. We will have a few additional priests who will hear confessions. Jesus explained to Nicodemus the necessity of his impending crucifixion and resurrection by analogy with Moses and the bronze serpent in the desert. The bronze serpent points to the cross of Christ which defeats sin and death and obtains everlasting life for those who believe in Jesus and in his victory on the cross. “We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you, because by your Cross you have redeemed the world…”

LENT

STATIONS OF THE CROSS

Will you come with us as we walk together and pray the Stations of the Cross? We as Catholics consider this a time of fasting and prayer. We sometimes try to give up some favorite food or pastime and try to sacrifice in remembrance of Jesus as he approached his ultimate sacrifice for us in dying on the cross. Some try to do something extra during this time to remind them of the poor, needy, and homeless, all those that Christ suffered and died for. Maybe serving at a shelter, donating to a charity, giving in the Rice Bowl that benefits people around the world. Others may spend extra time at Church during the hour of Adoration in the mornings, stopping by church during the day and praying, attending morning Mass. All things to remind them that Jesus suffered and died for us and opened the gates of heaven for us. Praying the Stations of the Cross on Friday evenings at 6:30pm in church helps us to remember the sacrifice that Jesus gave freely for us and, as a community, we join together in prayer. Why not join us and bring your children so that they may witness your commitment to your faith and love of Christ. Friday’s March 16th & 23rd at 6:30pm in church.

HERE’S WHAT’S HAPPENING AT ST. CHRISTOPHER IN THE WEEK AHEAD:

“Notes” from Phil & Amy Spiritual Thoughts of “Twos” (Part 3 of 5 Lenten Articles)

So again in continuing on, these are thoughts that were written down from the Holy

Spirit during the night, one night after Ash Wednesday. This is already for the 4th Week of Lent and I know that this Sunday is about light and joy amidst the solemn time of Lent. I kept hearing “write down spiritual things about two’s; and so I scribbled 2 tablets and 2 great commandments – Love God and, Love Your Neighbor as Yourself. The only thing that I could think of at that moment as to why this was a thought was thinking back to our Christmas Concert with the St. Christopher and St. Emeric’s combined Music Ministry efforts. We titled that concert “On the Fourth Night of Christmas” and our booklet had a brief explanation of the hidden Catholic Code of “The Twelve Days of Christmas” We noted that there were two levels of meaning in the song. The “True Love” you hear over and over was not as on the surface of a smitten boy or girl-friend but rather Jesus Christ, because truly love was born on Christmas Day. The two turtle doves represent the Old and New Testament. (You can check out the Catholic Code online “The History of the 12 Days of Christmas”.) I also wrote down “Twosies, Twosies” which is a reference to the Noah and the Ark reading we hear (heard) on the 1st Sunday of Lent and a song we teach the children’s choir. They’ll have sung the verse of “Rise and Shine” with 7 or 8 children’s duets. The story of Noah is mindful of God’s covenant; the Lord promises never to destroy creation again by floodwaters. God’s patience with the building of the ark has a few people (8) saved through water. This story prefigured baptism, which saves us now. “Two” makes me think of the bow (rainbow) and sometimes we even see a double rainbow, but the vision is that through the Resurrection of Jesus Christ (who went to the heavens) we are always connected with Him. I suddenly found myself writing down more pairs of words; divinity and humanity, and for some reason I always remember hearing Cardinal George’s voice using this combo of words saying that Jesus is of both words to the very fullest. I wrote – Jesus’ life and Jesus’ death, and realized that Jesus wasn’t supposed to be killed as a baby and was so often fleeing from danger so I take that as we’re supposed to pay attention to his life (that’s the New Testament) as much as his death. I wrote Christmas and Easter and love and joy. I also remembered a quote from John Paul II saying “we have to somewhere along the line think – why was Love nailed to the Cross?” I wrote Bible – Old and New Testaments. I wrote Joseph and Joseph – I had just seen the play of “Joseph” and I am learning of the great importance our patron saint, only second to Mary, husband of Mary and father figure to a world that so badly needs fathers, family and church; we’re in crisis with this in our world and Joseph has been there all the time but how often have I, we pray to him? One Joseph is found in the Old Testament and other in the New. Interestingly both have a father named Jacob. I jotted devotional and liturgical, that’s time alone and time for us to be gathered. I wrote – Center of the Universe - and how long does it take each of us to realize we’re not; and then a realization that the life of love that Jesus shares is in service to others. We learn this at home and then in our communities and only successfully through God’s guidance. Without guidance, some people never get past the attitude of

FOURTH WEEK OF LENT ENCOUNTER ANDRISE We encounter Andrise, a teacher in Hai who knows the importance of forming young people who will give back to the community—and their country. Reflect on the role teachers have played in bringing you closer to God and your community. How can you support those, worldwide, who are forced to flee their homes to find safety or be er opportuni es? Visit crsricebowl.org for more.

“Notes” from Phil & Amy, (continued) being the center of attention, and then will lack in humble service. Lastly, I wrote blind and sight – there’s new sight in Jesus Christ. I mentioned after the Epiphany that it made sense to me to prepare for and anticipate Lent and now in Lent I feel I’m anticipating and preparing for Triduum and Eastertime. Next week I’ll share some more of my nighttime visit notes. Simple Joy is found with Peace and Trust, Follow a Light that helps us to see, Phil & Amy Here’s a look at next week’s scripture readings….The First Reading from Jeremiah 31: The days are coming when I will make a new covenant with Israel and I will forgive their iniquity. The Responsorial Psalm 51: A pure heart, create for me, O God. The Second Reading from Hebrews 5: He learned to obey and became for all the source of eternal salvation. The Gospel Acclamation: If you serve me, follow me, says the Lord, and where I am, my servant will also be. The Gospel from John 12: If a grain of wheat falls on the ground and dies it yields a rich harvest.
