HERE’S WHAT’S HAPPENING AT ST. CHRISTOPHER IN THE WEEK AHEAD:

“Notes” from Phil & Amy, Continuing Our Overviews of Lent

Once again, a year has gone by and I hear myself again saying “it’s time to try and clear the

clutter.” Ash Wednesday’s readings offer good instruction for the 40 Days of Lent. Clearing one’s heart and mind, and arranging quietness, stillness, and extra prayer time. That theme continued right into Sunday’s Readings with paying extra attention to the Holy Spirit taking Jesus to the desert and knowing that the Holy Spirit should be with each of us as well on our journey to the desert. Well I got to morning Mass at the beginning of the 1st Week of Lent and heard Fr. Kris reflect on being focused in on one thing in particular to improve in your life rather than a whole list of things for Lent, that it can be a good approach; it was comforting to hear that. Our family also does the 3 minute Lenten Reflections with Matthew Kelly of Dynamic Catholic and low and behold, Tuesday’s reflection was on the topic of “when you’re too busy”, busy all the time, that the busier you get, the harder it can be to be a great Christian. It’s all great advice so I simply pass the thoughts on to whoever takes it in finding it can be beneficial to your Lenten efforts as well. It’s making me take a breath before the article and trying to simplify things a bit and focus, use the notepad and outline tools better and maybe not miss some things right in front of you. Well today is the story of the Transfiguration of Jesus. Ancient traditions say that this custom of celebration may have come in history from the Transfiguration of Jesus taking place 40 days before Good Friday. Jesus, completely radiating with pure light, transfigured must have been an amazing sight, out of this world, and in the face of Glory. Like Peter we have to ask, how often is God right in front of us, showing us divinity and a plan for our life, and we focus on so many other preoccupations? Jesus’ words are the wake-up call today, “Rise, and do not be afraid.” They prompt us to refocus on what’s important: not worldly considerations but an attentive ear and an open heart to his ever-living word, calling each of us to be examples of heaven here on earth. A favorite music line of this day to me is “This is the Time of Fulfillment, the Reign of God Is At Hand.” Spot on, Lent heralds a call to conversion, Lent begins with an invitation from the Lord to “Come Home.” In this season we are called to repentance individually and as an assembly of the people of God. During the 40 days we fast by responding to the need of others (thank you Deacon Mike for highlighting Rice Bowl and all the good works of the U.S. Church throughout the world). Our spiritual community is strengthened by fasting and sharing. Christ did not exclude anyone from His love, nor should we. Our musical intentions (as music ministers) is to assist the tone of the liturgy in emphasizing our need to grow together as an assembly of the people of God. Enjoy vibrant history chanting the Agnus Dei this Lenten season and at some Masses the Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus (Holy, Holy, Holy) as well. Enjoy the Lenten song and hymn selections and also the spaces of silence, enjoy the chanted response to our Prayers of the Faithful, our Kyrie and all our Mass parts. Be attentive to the words of the songs. These songs as part of our Mass lead us to our holiest Days of the Year in the Triduum, the conclusion of Lent. As we move deeper into Lent we can tell you that few if any hymns capture the entire story of the torture, passion, crucifixion and dying of the Hero of Calvary as does a classic hymn known as “Were You There”; verses so simple and stark, verses so profound and powerful, poignant and haunting lines that insist we spend 40 days to ponder the verse, the story. The hymn is an inescapable portal to Lent. We mention this because in addition to so many good Parish opportunities for growth, prayer and charity during Lent, we will also offer a 3pm Sunday afternoon Cantata “We Were There” on March 29th to help prepare us for Holy Week and Triduum. There” a Lenten Cantata by Pepper Choplin. A cantata is a vocal composition with an instrumental accompaniment (our Chamber Orchestra), typically in several movements, often involving a choir. Religious Education News Thank you to our Religious Ed Families, Catechists, Aides, Children’s Choir and Fr. Kris for the beautiful Lenten Mass we celebrated together this past Tuesday. Thank you to our School and Religious Ed grade 2 families who met to discuss the next steps of preparation as we get closer to celebrating their First Holy Communion coming up on May 2! If you were unable to attend the meeting, please call the RE Office for a recap. We look ahead to this Tuesday, March 10th when grades 2 through 8 and the Sacraments Class along with their families will come together in the Church at 6 PM for Lenten Reconciliation. As we journey closer to Easter it is important to prepare our hearts and trust in God’s mercy. Grade 1 students will meet for class on March 10 in the school at their normal time, 4:30 PM – 5:45 PM. Dismissal will take place in the school lobby. We continue to look to see Lent in 20/20 through our actions. This week we… PRAY… each time you hear an emergency siren this week… pray for those afflicted with illness or effected by disaster…as well as for those who help them. FAST…from social media, video games, or both for one day. GIVE…your time and do a chore that you don’t normally do without being asked. Have a blessed week! We are raising money to send care packages to military personnel overseas or deployed in harms way. Everyone is welcome. We will be at the St. Chris’s gym on Friday, March 13th, between 5 and 9 PM. Stop by the Boy Scout Fish fry and then come shoot free throws. Let them know that you are shooting in the Free Throw competition and they will take a dollar off your fish fry price. For all those out there that like a little competition there are four divisions-Men’s/Lady’s over 50, Men’s/Lady’s under 50, (lol…. Hey, I’m not asking for proof of age). Remember “granny” shots [ala Rick Berry] count too!! Let’s have some fun and help raise a little money to help our friends and fellow parishioners. The cost to join in the fun is $5.00 per shooter. Let’s get back to the fundamentals; charity, unity, fraternity and patriotism. For us Knights it’s our standard.

6th Grade Science News

The 6th students recently learned about many different energy sources in science class. As a culminating activity, the students

learned more about solar and wind energy in a hands-on lab exploration. Wind energy studies explored the different amounts of energy produced by changing

the number of turbine blades, and the angles of those blades. Solar studies explored the energy produced by solar panels, solar heating, and ultraviolet radiation. We also had the opportunity to build

and use a hydropower car!
