Captain’s Guide to USTA
Jr. Team Tennis & TennisLink
Leagues cannot exist without you! Thank you for volunteering.
League Responsibilities of a Jr. Team Tennis Captain
1. Read and know the rules of the league in which the team is competing. The captain is responsible for the team to play and act in accordance to the rules and code.
2. Let the Jr. Team Tennis Local League Coordinator (JTT LLC) know that your contact information.
3. Register your team and make sure your team members register themselves using the team id you have provided.
4. Make sure that all members of the team are eligible to play in the level registered (i.e. age, ranking, or level of play). If a player has 200 or more ranking points, they must play the Advanced level.
5. Report scores on TennisLink within 48 hours of completed match. Home team records match
scores.
6. Keep in contact with the Jr. Team Tennis Local League Coordinator (JTT LLC). If there is any doubt of a match time or schedule question, the captain must contact the JTT LLC and should not wait for the coordinator to contact the captain.
Team Responsibilities of a Captain
1. Provide players with the team # to register on TennisLink. 2. Act as liaison between parents, players, and the JTT LLC. Please let the JTT LLC know if there are
any facility issues. 3. Advise players when their matches are scheduled, what the lineup is, and whether they need to
bring balls. 4. Captain must communicate with the opposing captain prior to the match if there are not going
to be enough players to facilitate the match. The match can be rescheduled if both the coaches and the JTT LLC are in agreement (this prevents kids and parents from traveling to a match only to have to default a team match).
5. Print a scorecard from TennisLink and bring to team match. 6. Team captain checks at facility for the team 15 minutes prior to match. Court assignments may
be given at that time. 7. Exchange the team lineup with the opposing captain before each match. Talk with opposing
captain to try and match the players with similar ability for a fair match. Remember this is team tennis. We want the kids to have the best match possible and above all, HAVE FUN.
8. Coaching during a team match is allowed by the team captain only. Coaching is allowed on the changeovers only. Please encourage your players to be good sports. Remind parents to adhere to the dos and don’ts conduct.
9. Make arrangements for the team to attend the end of season party. For additional help with TennisLink, USTA has a national learning center with online tutorials. Go to www.usta.com/lrc and register to view tutorials for team tennis.
Some things captains do, but are not required…
Schedule and conduct team practices.
Buy balls for team matches (after collecting money from players).
Send email updates and reminders to the team.
Organize the team to travel to the USTA Jr. Team Tennis Sectional
Championships following the season. All teams are invited.
Make a schedule of play based on availability.
Compile a team contact list so that parents and players all know the best way to
contact one another.
Appoint a co-captain so you don’t have to be at every match.
Rules & Regulations for USTA Jr. Team Tennis local league **Jr. Team Tennis Local League Coordinator may have rules in addition to these
rules. League Fee: $35.00 per player Requires USTA membership. http://usta.com/membership
League fee includes: Nike Dri-fit Jersey, TennisLink fee, Awards for 1st & 2nd place, and
league party.
FORMAT OF PLAY: The following is a general format of play. Your JTT LLC will inform you of the local league format of play. When the captain prints out the scorecard the format is on the card. For the 12u, 14u, 18u Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced divisions, World Team Tennis, which is co-
ed, is the format of play at the 2009 Section Championships. This format is as follows.
1. One male doubles match 4. One male singles match 2. One female doubles match 5. One female singles match 3. One mixed doubles match
The JTT LLC has the flexibility to set up the playing and scoring format that best suits its needs. A local
league can offer as little as 2 singles and 1 doubles position and not be gender specific. There are
multiple scoring formats in which to choose from, however, a 6 or 8 game pro-set (regular or no-ad
scoring) using a set tiebreaker at 5 or 7 games all is what is normally used at the Section
championship. Local league scoring usually depends on time constraints and/or court availability.
QuickStart Tennis Division, 8 & under and 10 & under, features age appropriate equipment, smaller
court sizes, and modified scoring. One volunteer per court is needed to assist this division. Scoring is as
follows:
8 & Under ---Best of 3 games, first to 7 points. 10 & Under – Best of 3 sets, first to 4 games with 3rd set—first to 7 points. What if a team doesn’t have the required number of players? Ideally if a team doesn’t have enough players for the match, the captain of the team would contact the opposing captain to let them know. In the event that it does happen, play as many matches possible with the players available. A player may play multiple times to complete the match in local league play. Teams Standings: Will be determined by total games won or winning percentage. With both criteria EVERY GAME COUNTS! Standings can be viewed at: http://teamtennis.usta.com
Rain: If you think there may be rain, please call the tennis center you are scheduled to
play. Decisions related to playable courts are the facility’s responsibility. Note: clay courts can withstand rain and still be playable. Don’t assume that it is raining everywhere!!!
Check in: Captains or one designated person should only check in for the team match.
You will then be assigned your courts. Tardiness: A tardiness penalty will be in effect. -Captain must notify opposing team if players will be late -If team captain is not notified, the following penalties will go into effect: 1-5 minutes late: Loss of: toss, 5 minute warm-up 5-10 minutes late: Loss of: toss, 5 minute warm-up, one game 11-15 minutes late: Loss of: toss, 5 minute warm-up, two games 15:01+ minutes late: default Captains have the responsibility to enforce the penalty system.
It is recognized that emergencies do occur. If a team captain is notified in a timely manner that there will not be enough players to field the team, then good faith effort must be made to reschedule the match.
If teams cannot agree on a reschedule date, the matches must be recorded as defaults in TennisLink. If running late—call opposing team captain to allow flexibility with tardiness.
Line up: Captains in all divisions are required to communicate prior to match, their
team’s “order of strength” to the opposing captain to allow for the best match ups between players. Players who are not on the scorecard and are not registered in TennisLink are NOT allowed to play.
Linesman: Prior to the match, both captains should consult who will be calling the lines. In
the Intermediate and Advance divisions, players should be capable of calling their own lines. If both captains want to assist with line calls, assistant coaches or parents may be appointed to be the official linesman of the game. Coaches, parents and players are NOT allowed to argue with the linesman, should one be appointed. If a misunderstanding does occur on court, please allow players to attempt to resolve on their own. Captains should always consult each other prior to intervening.
Coaching: Coaching will be allowed only during the change over after odd games. The
captain should encourage the player to stay positive and offer encouraging words to the players. No coaching is allowed during a tie-break.
Match: When the match is complete, each player must come to the net and shake
hands to congratulate the opponent. It is important that captains convey the message of good sportsmanship through their actions and the directions given to the players.
Tie-break Game
During a tie-break game, points are scored “Zero”,“1”, “2”, “3”, etc. The first player/team to win seven points wins the “Game” and “Set”, provided there is a margin of two points over the opponent(s). If necessary, the tie-break game shall continue until this margin is achieved. The player whose turn it is to serve shall serve the first point of the tie-break game. The following two points shall be served by the opponent(s) (in doubles, the player of the opposing team due to serve next). After this, each player/team shall serve alternately for two consecutive points until the end of the tie-break game (in doubles, the rotation of service within each team shall continue in the same order as during that set).
When do the players change ends? Players change ends after every six points and at the end of the Tiebreak. They must change sides during the Tiebreak without any break or delay.

Only coaches and captains or coordinators can enter scores. Sign into the system by entering your registration ID number (USTA membership number or TennisLink Team Tennis ID number). Then follow the link on the left side, “Score Entry,” which can also be found on the homepage under “My Options.” You will be asked to enter the match number, which should have been supplied to you by your area league coordinator. Follow the screens to enter all of the information. It is a good idea to have a copy of the scorecard with the correct match scores and players in front of you prior to beginning the entry process. What should I do if I make a mistake after I have confirmed my scorecard? Contact your Area League Coordinator to report the error. A person authorized to change scores will make the correction.

General Characteristics of Various NTRP Playing Levels
1.5 - Beginner You have limited experience and are working primarily on getting the ball in play.
2.0 - Beginner You lack court experience and your strokes need developing. You are familiar with the basic positions for singles and
doubles play.
2.5 - Beginner You are learning to judge where the ball is going, although your court coverage is limited. You can sustain a short rally of
slow pace with other players of the same ability.
3.0 - Intermediate
You are fairly consistent when hitting medium-paced shots, but are not comfortable with all strokes and lack execution
when trying for directional control, depth, or power. Your most common doubles formation is one-up, one-back.
3.5 - Advanced You have achieved improved stroke dependability with directional control on moderate shots, but need to develop depth
and variety. You exhibit more aggressive net play, have improved court coverage and are developing teamwork in
doubles.
4.0 - Advanced You have dependable strokes, including directional control and depth on both forehand and backhand sides on moderate-
paced shots. You can use lobs, overheads, approach shots and volleys with some success and occasionally force errors
when serving. Rallies may be lost due to impatience. Teamwork in doubles is evident.
4.5 - Advanced You have developed your use of power and spin and can handle pace. You have sound footwork, can control depth of
shots, and attempt to vary game plan according to your opponents. You can hit first serves with power and accuracy and
place the second serve. You tend to over hit on difficult shots. Aggressive net play is common in doubles.
5.0 - Advanced You have good shot anticipation and frequently have an outstanding shot or attribute around which a game may be
structured. You can regularly hit winners or force errors off of short balls and can put away volleys. You can
successfully execute lobs, drop shots, half volleys, overhead smashes, and have good depth and spin on most second
serves.
5.5 - Advanced You have mastered power and/or consistency as a major weapon. You can vary strategies and styles of play in a
competitive situation and hit dependable shots in a stress situation.
6.0 to 7.0 - Advanced You have had intensive training for national tournament competition at the junior and collegiate levels and have obtained
a sectional and/or national ranking.

Dos and Don’ts for Parents and Spectators
The parents’ role is the toughest -- it’s not easy to watch your kids play.
DO’S
1. Do treat the child the same whether he or she wins or loses.
2. Do try to have fun and enjoy the events and the travel. Your unhappiness can breed a child’s guilt.
3. Do look relaxed, calm, positive and energized on the sidelines. Your attitude will help the child play
better.
4. Do make friends with other parents at the event. Socializing can make the event more fun.
5. Do get involved if the child’s behavior is unacceptable during match play.
6. Do let the coach do the coaching. Too much input can confuse the child.
7. Do understand that the child needs a break from tennis occasionally. It doesn’t mean the child is
quitting or burning out.
8. Do be there when the child loses or gets discouraged. Be an understanding listener, not a fixer.
9. Do, at the same time, give the child some space when he or she loses. Your youngster will want to be
alone for awhile, and then he/she will be okay.
10. Do keep your sense of humor. When you laugh and have fun, your child’s stress level will big drop.
11. Do be tough on your player where sportsmanship and cheating are concerned -- nobody wants to be
saddled with the label poor sport or cheater. Stop it now.
12. Do support your child emotionally, financially, and logistically.
You have three roles as a parent 1) support 2) support 3) support.
DON’TS
1. Don’t say, “We’re playing today.” Instead, say “You’re playing today.” This is your child’s match; help
them learn how to be responsible for preparing to play (registration, match check-in).
2. Don’t turn away when the child behaves in an unsportsmanlike manner on or off the court.
3. Don’t tell the child what he or she did wrong or right after a tough match.
4. Don’t ask the child to talk to you immediately after a loss.
5. Don’t make enemies with your child’s opponent’s parents during the match.
6. Don’t act negatively and angrily on the sidelines unless your child is acting in an unsportsmanlike
manner; they’ll pick up on it in a heartbeat.
7. Don’t make your life your child’s tennis - Don’t live out your own dreams through your child’s tennis.
8. Don’t make your child feel guilty for all the time, money, and sacrifices you’re making for his/her tennis.
9. Don’t think of your child’s tennis as an investment for which you expect a return.
10. Don’t compare your child’s progress with that of other children.
11. Don’t badger, harass, or use sarcasm to motivate your child.
12. Don’t talk about us (coaches, staff) talk to us, if you have comments or suggestions.
13. No coaching from the side (serve and volley, hit to the backhand).
DON’T EQUATE WINNING WITH LOVE!!
This is probably the absolute most important thing NOT to do. You must have unconditional love for your
child.
This is a great game. You and your kids will have fun, grow and make great friends - everyone can be a
winner.
