Network’s Annual Fishing for Kids

Tournament took place on August 23-26

at the West Coast Fishing Club located in

Haida Gwaii.

Representing the Vancouver Canucks

were General Manager Jim Benning,

Head Coach Willie Desjardins, Canucks

Alumnus Kirk McLean, and Canucks

defensemen Dan Hamhuis and Frankie

Corrado. Also in attendance were CAN

Founder Paolo Aquilini, and former

Canucks Willie Mitchell and Manny

Malhotra. Of course, never missing the

opportunity to get out on the water,

Canucks Fin was in attendance as well.

This year’s event raised an incredible $1

million dollars to support children and

families living with autism in BC.

Part of being a Canuck means giving

back to the community, so during the

2015 Prospect Development Camp,

these young Canuck hopefuls did just

that.

The prospects toured around BC

Children’s Hospital handing out

autographed player cards, books, and

taking pictures with the patients and

their families. When asked his

thoughts on the visit, Canuck hopeful

Anton Cederholm, said that “For me,

it’s always been about being great on

and off the ice.” ………………..

After a busy week of intense training

schedules, the prospect visit to the

BCCH provided a perfect opportunity

for team prospects to learn what it

truly means to be a Canuck.

LAW ENFORCEMENT TORCH RUN On June 3rd, Chris Higgins traded in his ice skates for running shoes and participated in the Law Enforcement Torch Run in support of BC Special Olympics. Yielding the torch, Higgy, Fin, Special Olympic athletes, and law enforcement personnel ran one kilometre down Granville Street.

Do you know a young, local hero making a difference?

This season Dan Hamhuis is once again recognizing young people for their community efforts by bringing them and three of their guests to a Canucks home game. As part of their evening, Hammer’s Heroes are recognized on the big screen in-game to help inspire others in attendance to also give back in the community. Post-game, Dan meets with his Heroes to show his appreciation for their efforts.

TIM HORTON’S CAMP DAY

In support of Tim Horton’s Camp Day on June 3rd, an initiative where Tim Horton’s restaurant owners donate 100% of their coffee proceeds to help send kids to camp, Canucks Assistant Coach Glen Gulutzan and Fin, rolled up their sleeves to help serve customers at the Main and Terminal Tim Horton’s location.

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream! On Thursday August 13th, Canucks alumni Kirk McLean and Darcy Rota, gladly ate a blizzard and “chilled” with customers at Dairy Queen on Fraser Street in support of BC Children’s Hospital Foundation.

LAW ENFORCEMENT TORCH RUN

SILVER SKATE AWARDS

The annual Canucks Silver Skate Award is presented to BC Hockey minor hockey teams or associations in various age and skill levels that have shown team work, perseverance and hard work throughout the hockey season. This year’s awards were held at the BC Minor Hockey Annual General Meeting in SunPeaks on June 13th.

There were 21 award recipients for the 2014.15 season, including the minor hockey associations from Burnaby, Chetwynd, Chilliwack, Cranbrook, Fort St. John, Kelowna, Langley, New Westminster, Northern, North Shore, Richmond, Selkirk, South Fraser, Terrace, Tri Cities, Vancouver, Whitehorse, and Whistler. Congratulations to all of the Silver Skate Award winners!

SPORTSMANSHIP STARTS IN

THE STANDS

BC Hockey, in partnership with the Vancouver Canucks, announced the launch of a new educational program called Sportsmanship Starts in the Stands which encourages positive behaviour by hockey parents in the rink. Sportsmanship Starts in the Stands was developed to address the behaviours and attitudes that have become a negative influence in the game of hockey in BC. The intent of the program is to ensure that the environment at BC Hockey events and initiatives is positive for everyone. It was also developed to ensure the level of parent expectations was consistent across the province. “Hockey should be fun for kids and the atmosphere our parents create in the rink has a huge impact on everyone’s experience and happiness,” said Trevor Linden, Vancouver Canucks President of Hockey Operations. “The Vancouver Canucks are a huge supporter of grassroots hockey development and very proud to support the Sportsmanship Starts in the Stands program.”

TREVOR LINDEN SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS

The Trevor Linden Scholarship is an award dedicated to youth who have taken initiative to make a substantial difference in their community. For their commitment to the betterment of life that this award celebrates, the 2015 recipients, Anna Legault, Alberta Putney, Duva Karunakaran, and Alexander Hook, each received a $2,500 scholarship. PAVEL BURE AWARD WINNER

The 2015 winner Michael Warren Choi perfectly embodies the leadership values celebrated by the Pavel Bure Award. Through his dedication to his team as captain, Michael has shown himself to be an expression of teamwork, integrity, and sportsmanship. His extracurricular efforts throughout his community have also shown him to be a tireless leader, unfailingly representing the qualities that define minor hockey. On behalf of the Vancouver Canucks and BC Hockey, congratulations Michael!

CANUCKS FAMILY EDUCATION CENTRE CELEBRATION TEA

On June 10th, Canucks Family Education Centre graduates and their families attended a Celebration Tea at Rogers Arena. With the largest graduating class since its inception, 36 graduates were presented with personalized jerseys as a graduation gift. Congratulations to all the graduates!

golf tournament is a full team event supporting the Canucks for Kids Fund and

Canucks alumni charity, the BC Hockey Benevolent Association. Last year’s tournament raised over

which will include a Party on the Plaza event with games,

food, music & entertainment as well as skills and

FIN APPEARANCES On the weekend of June 19th-20th, Fin travelled to Orlando, Florida to compete in the 2015 Mascot Games benefiting New Hope for Kids. Having won the Games last year, Fin and the rest of Team Blue looked to defend their championship title. This annual sporting event tests the abilities of close to 30 mascots from sports teams across North America, with the top team walking away with a trophy and the distinction of champions of the mascot world. Having attended the past 11 Games, Fin is no stranger to the broad assortment of wild games including an obstacle course and inflatable joust. Despite a valiant effort, Fin and Team Blue were unable to walk away with the trophy succumbing to Team Green composed of STUFF from the Orlando Magic, Sebastian representing the University of Miami, Orbit from the Houston Astros, Slamson representing the Sacramento Kings, and N.J. Devil from the New Jersey Devils.

The games were an exhilarating experience for our Vancouver-based Orca, who looks forward to competing next year in an effort to win back the title.

North Saanich will host a Pre-Season Game between

Vancouver Canucks and San Jose Sharks. In its ninth

season, Kraft Hockeyville remains committed to investing in community arenas to help keep the

game alive from coast-to-coast and engage fans.
