    race and peace unto you!

"Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the worldgives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid." - John 14:27

In the midst of our abundant lives, there may come a time when the balance of peace

shifts. We're unable to rest and enjoy life's joy. We feel burdened down with worry.

We become detached from family, friends, work and church. Our peace of mind seems

to be jeopardized by overwhelming feelings of stress and inner turmoil.

When we're confronted with threats to our inner peace, know that God will be there

for us. He is bigger than all problems. The peace of God will keep our hearts and

minds. We are promised this peace as long as we trust in Him. He is God, we are not.

With God involved in our lives, we can rest easy. He brings us to the end of our

burdens. We will not be left alone to deal with it because peace in God conquers our

fears and anxieties. Faith in God gives us a steadfast mind to overcome the

circumstances in our lives. When we pray more, we worry less.

Don't get separated from God because life will not work without Him. We must keepour minds on God and He will keep us in perfect peace. No matter our burdens, God

makes it available to us. His presence gives peace and strength to all.

Let's continue to covet peace as if our lives thrive on it.

    Stay Strong!

50 Years Later, We Still Have A Dream"I have a dream that one day this nation

will rise up and live out the true meaning of

its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident; that all men are created equal."-

    Martin Luther King, Jr.

The March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom onAugust 28, 1963 became the catalyst in America forequality in human rights. Most of the issues that plagued

black Americans then, still remain as a painful reminder of

the long and difficult road still ahead. Dr. King's "I Have A

Dream" speech given from the steps of the LincolnMemorial has constantly been the barometer for measuring

    the progress of racial equality.

Fast forward 50 years later, on August 24, 2013,

Christopher Bullock, Pastor of Canaan Baptist Church and

President of the New Castle County Council, led fivechartered buses of parishioners and community members to

march in honor of the historic event. They joined tens ofthousands of people gathered for a prelude rally on the

National Mall observing the 50th anniversary date of the

March of 1963. This event provided the crowds with

noteworthy speeches of a plea to not give up by John

Lewis (the only surviving speaker from the first march)and Martin Luther King, III's message embracing hisfather's famous speech. It was sponsored by Rev. Al

Sharpton's National Action Network and the NAACP.Afterwards, the crowds marched from the Lincoln

Memorial to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial.

Lastly, in observance of the actual anniversary date of thehistoric March of 1963, crowds gathered again to

commemorate and celebrate the continued quest of racialequality for all Americans. The celebratory event

showcased prominent speakers including President Obama

with his reflections of racial progress over the past 50years, and the need to continue the progression.

Canaan is a church that has attractedmasses of people coming from the tri-

state area, and within these masses is a

diverse age group. However, as a church

Canaan has adopted ministries for every

age whether old or young. This month wehighlight two ministries which cater to both the mature

    and youthful members of Canaan.

First, there is the Rites of Passage Ministry led byBrother Ty Knight; a ministry that specifically targets the

young men of Canaan. With the help of leading men of

the church, the Rites of Passage Ministry attempts to

guide young men through the trials and tribulations ofadolescence. In this ministry young men establish goals

and are taught how to map out plans which will help

them achieve their goals. Not only are Canaans young

men encouraged to partake in this ministry but also the

many other ministries. During adolescence there aremany things which can trip up or even derail young men

and this ministry attempts to keep young men on trackand often employs many methods to do so. More

importantly, the Rites of Passage Ministry keeps

Canaans young men close to the Word for Romans 12:2

says: Do not be conformed to this world, but betransformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing

you may discern what is the will of God, what is good

and acceptable and perfect. In keeping young men close

to the Word, the Rites of Passage ministry teaches them

how to live in the world but not be of it.

This months second ministry highlight belongs to a

ministry which celebrates those mature members of

Canaan, keeping them active and informed. The formerlytitled Seasoned Saints Ministry has changed its name in

honor of Ernest and Yolanda Purnell for their sacrifice

and service in the Church. The newly titled DeaconsErnest and Yolanda Purnell Senior Ministry is one whichprovides for the mature members of Canaan in many

    important ways.

On September 26th this ministry held an event to informmembers of Canaan about Alzheimers disease entitled

Know the 10 Signs; Early Detection Matters.
