Shmini%Atzeres%is%really%an%independent%holiday%celebrated%on%the%22nd%of%Tishrei.%Outside%of%Israel,%the%holiday%is%

celebrated%for%two%days%like%all%the%other%Jewish%festivals.%The%second%day%of%Shmini%Atzeres%is%called%Simchas%Torah.%

In%Israel,%however,%Shmini%Atzeres%is%only%one%day%and%that%is%when%they%celebrate%Simchas%Torah.%The%Gemara%

ANOTHER DEFINITION FOR עצרת

Sifsei Chaim (p. 339)

In the Aramaic translation, the word “עצרת” is defined as “כנישין,” meaning gathering or collecting together. This reflects what the Zohar says that on the joyous day of the King everyone gathers together with him to celebrate. However, there is another way to understand the translation of “Atzeres” meaning gathering: to gather all that we have acquired throughout the High Holiday season. The Sfas Emes comments on the verse "והיית אך שמח"- that “21 =) ”אך in gematria) corresponds to the 21 days of serving Hashem from Rosh Hashana to Shmini Atzeres; from the fruits of our labor over these 21 days comes a tremendous joy; thus, the Torah calls Shmini Atzeres a “gathering” because on this day we bring together all the lessons we have learned over the prior 21 days so that their influence and impact will continue throughout the rest of the year.

Magged Yosef (p. 54)

Targum Yonasan translates “עצרת” as “to gather/enter/bring in” from the sukkah back into the house. The name of the holiday is meant to demonstrate its essence, so what then is significant about leaving the sukkah and returning to our houses that this should be the deeper message of Shmini Atzeres? We dwell in the sukkah seven days and then we must take the lessons we have gained from Sukkos, that this world is only temporary and a preparation for the Next World, and imbue those ideas into our lives in our permanent brick homes. Thus, G-d gave use Shmini Atzeres to be able to solidify the lessons of Sukkos in our minds and hearts before we return to the grind of our day to day lives.
