Dear Camp J Families,

Look, up at the J…It’s a new friend! It’s a field trip! It’s “Super Summer at Camp J!”

The non-stop excitement returns to JCC summer camps in 2014. From adventurous field trips to incredible specialty classes, campers will be kept engaged and enriched all summer long, and create life-long memories. Campers will participate in themed programming and activities, learn about different cultures, and welcome Shabbat in a music-filled, friendly atmosphere.

Our camp staff are specially trained to work with various age groups and meet the needs of all children. We offer high staff-to-camper ratios and each child is provided with individualized attention. We are the only day camp in Tucson accredited by the prestigious American Camping Association, which ensures delivery of the highest standards in the camping industry.

Camp programming is designed so that families receive the high-quality care and value they deserve. Campers enjoy the use of the JCC’s beautiful state-of-the-art 100,000-square-foot facility, including a pool, Splash Park, full-size gym, outdoor fields, tennis courts, playgrounds, computer lab, art studio, dance room, music room, youth lounge, and more! Children are provided with a camping experience that is rich in arts, culture, athletics, swimming, and education. Travel camps enjoy cool, air-conditioned busses and luxury coaches. As a member of the JCC, you and your family will also appreciate and enjoy membership benefits which include our fitness facility, family programs, special events and so much more.

Camp J Scott Zorn, 9th year JCC Director of Children, Youth and Camping Services: Scott has a master’s degree in counseling psychology and several years of experience in counseling children, youth programming, music and Judaics. Scott and his wife Julie run music programs for children at the JCC and other community programs. They are the proud parents of two camp age children.

Aimee Gillard, Assistant Camp J Director: Aimee has a B.A. in family studies and human development from the U of A. She has experience as a teacher in early childhood programs, and in after-school and gymnastic programs. She enjoys exercise, sports and spending time with family. Aimee is excited for summer adventures at the J and meeting all the cool campers.

Lindsay Migdal, Assistant Camp J Director: Lindsay has a B.A.from MSU, and was a JCC camper in Ohio from pre-school through the teenage years. She has been a counselor and Unit Supervisor at JCC’s Camp Wise. She loves youth group, traveling, musical theatre, and camp. Lindsay looks forward to fun times and meeting all the campers this summer.

Early Childhood EducationAmy DeWitt, Early Childhood Education Co-Director. Amy has a master’s degree in early childhood education. She has been a teacher of children, kindergarten through third grade, and an instructional coach for elementary school. She truly enjoys spending time in the company of children.

Wendy Edmonds, Early Childhood Education Co-Director: Wendy has worked at the JCC for 17 years and has a bachelor’s degree in social work and psychology. She has spent most of her career working with young children and their families.

Special Needs ServicesKristin Taft, JCC Special Needs Services Director: Kristin has a master’s degree in education human relations. She is experienced in leading, supervising, and supporting programs for young people

with special needs. Kristin matches inclusion campers and their staff/advocates, educates all staff, and supervises Taglit programs at the JCC.

Stacy Sickels, Special Needs Services Coordinator: Stacy has several years of experience in the human services field. She provides support to all Taglit programs, including inclusion camp, through the coordination of activities, schedules, and direct support for campers and their advocates.

Additional Staff Camp Unit Heads oversee all aspects of their respective camps. Unit Head staff have experience as summer camp counselors and experience/education in working with children and in the camping industry. They supervise counselors and provide top quality, safety-first and age appropriate programming to all of camp, including the planning, implementation, and supervision of themed activities.

ECE Teachers and Counselors utilize their year round Early Childhood professionals who are experts in working with these age groups.

Camp Medical Assistant is educated and experienced in providing minor medical attention and first aid, education, medication disbursement and other services related to the health needs of our campers and staff.

Camp Administrator is responsible for the daily administration and communications of camp.

Camp J Counselors and Specialists are supervised by their respective Camp Directors. They are caring educators who are carefully screened, highly skilled, and trained to work with our diverse camp family. Specialists include swim instructors, lifeguards, arts & crafts, music, theater, sports, cooking, science, cultural programming, and leadership training. Schlichim (counselors from Israel) provide campers the spirit of Israel.

ECE Camps by AgeChildren two and older enrolled in our 12-month contract are automatically enrolled in all camp sessions. Children age 5 as of June 1 have the option of ECE’s Camp Megalim or Camp Shalom in the big Camp J.

Camp K’TonTon (Little Ones)2 years old by Sept. 1, 2014Our youngest campers begin to experience camp with age-appropriate activities. Our low camper-to-counselor ratio allows our staff to give your child the time and attention that the busy twos demand.

Camp Yeladim (Children)3 years old by Sept. 1, 2014Our three-year-old campers begin the full program, loaded with fun, new activities. Counselors guide campers through days of adventure and exploration based on each theme.

Visual Arts Camp Grades K-3Instructor: Gerrie Young, M.A.Join us for fun and creative activities with arts & crafts projects, clay and more. Camp takes place in our spacious art studio under the guidance of our professional Visual Arts instructor and includes plenty of take-home projects! Each day will include swim time and active play. Camp fee includes all supplies.

Clay CampGrades 2-6At Clay Camp, children will develop pottery techniques and experiment as they hand-build clay creations. Children will learn how to design pottery with glaze and practice throwing a pot using the wheel. Throughout this class children create many art pieces to take home and cherish for a lifetime. Ultimate Sports CampGrades 2-5 (must be 7 years old as of June 1, 2014)Ultimate Sports Camp is your destination for summer action and fun! Campers learn teamwork, sportsmanship, nutrition, and healthy habits. Each week focuses on a new sport including: basketball, baseball, flag football, hockey, soccer, obstacle courses, and swim time. Staff is experienced in leading and teaching athletic programs. Enjoy local sports-related field trips, sporting events, and a Diamondbacks Game. Campers also participate in all-camp closings, Maccabiah games, as well as late night and overnight events!

Camp Tiyul (Trip)Grades 6-9Tiyul campers will have an unforgettable summer as they visit sights in Tucson and Southern Arizona. They participate in outdoor adventures, field trips, sports programs, art enrichment, team building/friendship projects, and weekly themed activities. The coolest lair in town—the JCC Youth Lounge—is home base with billiards, darts, pinball, hi-tech gaming, and more. Campers also participate in Mitzvah (good deed) projects that give back to the community. Camp Tiyul follows all-camp themes, but with its own age-appropriate twist.

Mondays: OUTSIDE ADVENTURES Monday adventures focus on team building and includes outings to places like Mt. Lemmon, Sabino Canyon, and other popular Tucson destinations to hike, play and more!

Tuesdays: BE A HERO SERVICE DAY Field trips include places that help our community and others, including the Food Bank, Humane Society, and Ben’s Bells.

Wednesdays: BE A SPORT DAY Excursions to keep us active, such as Batting Cages, Challenge Course, Bowling, Roller Skating, and more.

Thursdays: TO TUCSON AND BEYOND! Spectacular quests to Phoenix, Tombstone, Bisbee, and other places outside of Tucson. Campers return by 5 p.m.

Dive ‘N Dine Saturdays: June 14 & July 12, 6:30–9:15 p.m.JCC Pool Deck All are welcome!Enjoy a movie, dinner and night of swimming with family and friends at the beautiful outdoor pool area of the JCC. Dive ‘n Dine has become a summer tradition at the J. Host A Shaliach!Interested in knowing more about Israel? Host a Shaliach for the summer. Shlichim are talented college-aged youth from Israel who go through an intensive screening process in preparation for spending the summer as a camp counselor and building a cultural bridge to Israel. Guaranteed RegistrationRegistrations received by March 31 must be complete and include all appropriate deposits by members with no outstanding balances. Applications received after March 31 will be accepted based on space availability.

How to Register, Membership Options and Enrollment FeesRegistration is accepted through online registration, mail, fax or in person at the JCC. A separate form must be completed for each child. A JCC family membership is required for all Early Childhood Education Camps and most Children & Youth Camps. Shorter-term “flex” membership options are available. Please contact our membership office for details and options. A one-time, non-refundable $25 administrative enrollment fee is required for all campers (except for pre- and post-camps, travel camps and School Days Out programs). Pre-/Post- Camps and Travel Camps are open to members and non-members.

Deposits and Payment OptionsA non-refundable deposit for each child, and payment selection (credit card, check, electronic funds transfer or cash) must be submitted with registration. The deposit is $25 for each child for the enrollment fee, plus $25 for each child for each two week session of camp (will apply to camp fee). Payments in person will be accepted at the JCC Welcome Desk. Payments by mail must be postmarked or received by March 31 in order to receive the early bird registration savings. Camp registrations will not be processed if there are any past due balances owed to the JCC. Current JCC membership must be maintained for participation in most camps (excludes Pre-Camps, Post-Camps and Travel Camps). Members who have questions about their camp payment schedule should contact the JCC Accounting department prior to registration.

Adds/Drops/TransfersThe Tucson JCC provides camp for over 650 children each summer. Recognizing that families may want to add, drop or change options, the following procedures are in place to

ensure that your needs are met. Members must complete, sign and deliver (mail, fax or e-mail to camp administrator) the Add/Drop request. The form is available through the Camp Registrar or Camp Secretary. Verbal requests in person or over the phone cannot be accepted. Additions or changes after March 31 will require payment at the post-March 31 rates. All fees must accompany the Add/Drop form. Transfers from one camp to another with less than two-week notice may incur a $25 processing fee.

Splitting SessionsWe do not offer split sessions at JCC camps. However, if a child’s school begins or ends in the middle of a session, we will pro-rate the week or session. Special circumstances may be considered at the Camp Director’s discretion, and will incur up to a $75 fee. Please speak with the Camp Director or Registrar for more information.

Cancellation/Refund PolicyCamp deposits are non-refundable but may be transferred to another camp balance. Refunds or cancellations of scheduled payments above deposit will only be given if written notice of cancellation is given a minimum of two weeks prior to camp date. It is your responsibility to cancel a session. All cancellations and changes must be by e-mail to [email protected]. Verbal cancellations and changes will not be accepted.

Early Bird Receive the early bird rate by signing up on or before March 31.

Credits for Siblings and Multiple Sessions A credit is given for additional children from the same family when enrolled in the same camp session. Credit applies to the lower camp fee. Camps signing up for 8 weeks or more may take advantage of multiple session credit. At the conclusion of summer camp, multiple session and sibling credits will be applied to your JCC account. These credits can be used for any JCC weekday child care, camp, or School Days Out programs through August 2015.

Scholarships Financial assistance for both membership and camp is available for member families who qualify. Funds will be distributed based on need and on a first-come, first-served basis. Requests are confidential and must be substantiated by approved documentation. Applications are available at the JCC Welcome Desk and must be turned in no later than March 31 with the accompanying Camp application form.

Camp J Camp HoursFull-day camps run from 9 a.m.–4 p.m., Monday–Friday (excluding May 26, June 4 and July 4). Half-Day and Extended Day options are available for Early Childhood Education Camps at an additional cost per session. Extended day rates are available for Camp J on a non-reservation per day basis: 7–9 a.m. at $10/day and 4–6 p.m. at $10/day.

Parent HandbookBeginning May 1, 2014, parents will receive a summer camp manual that includes information such as activity calendars, kosher lunch suggestions, Café @ the J lunch order forms, clothing requirements, overnight camping details and program specifics. It will also include the required Arizona Emergency Card, as well as immunization records, for our files.

LunchesUnless otherwise stated, all campers must bring a dairy sack lunch or have a lunch pre-ordered from the Café @ the J every day excluding Fridays when we provide lunches. Drinks and snacks are provided for all campers throughout the day. Campers are not permitted to purchase from the Café during the day while enrolled in Camp. NOTE: Campers who do not have lunch arrangements may be provided a Café @ the J lunch, or similar for a cost of $10 charged to your account.

Camp with FriendsPart of the fun of Camp is making lots of new friends! However, if your camper has a friend placement request, please note the other camper’s name on the registration and intake forms. Where space permits, we will do our best to accommodate these requests.

Camp T-ShirtsAll campers will receive a commemorative camp T-shirt. Please provide your desired size on the registration page.

A multiple session and sibling credit will be applied to your JCC account. Credits are: $100 for 4 sessions per child, $125 for 5 sessions per child, and 5% sibling discount for additional child-same sessions. This credit can be used for any JCC child care or camp (including school days out) through August 2015.
