Dr. Jeremy Fox earned an A.A. degree from The School for Music Vocations in 1996, then a B.M. degree in Piano Jazz Studies from Western Michigan University. He later received his Masters degree and DMA n Studio Jazz Writing from the University of Miami. For 8 years, Jeremy was an instructor at the School for Music Vocations. Jeremy just earned a Grammy® nomination for his arranging, and has received 10 awards from Downbeat magazine, including ones for: Jazz Song, Jazz Arrangement, Studio Engineering, and for his vocal jazz groups. Jeremy’s charts are published with UNC Jazz Press, Sound Music Publications, and Foxtrot Publishing. Jeremy annually co-conducts a workshop designed for music directors called The Jazz Harmony Retreat (www.TheJazzHarmonyRetreat.com).

Lucas Mattson has taught at The School for Music Vocations since 2001, becoming a vital part of the faculty. Before he began teaching in Creston, he received his B.M. in piano from the University of Northern Arizona. In addition to teaching applied classical piano, he also teaches classes in Vocal Arranging, Jazz Keyboard, Solo Jazz Literature, and 19th & 20th Century Theory. Throughout his

career, he has directed instrumental and vocal groups. Lucas is active as a pianist, clinician and arranger; he tours each year with his vocal jazz group, Harmonic Convergence.

Jason Smith is a graduate of Gonzaga University (B.A. in Vocal Performance). As a faculty member at The School for Music Vocations, Jason teaches Baroque music theory/composition, four levels of jazz piano classes, vocal arranging, conducting and rehearsal techniques. He also does the bulk

of the writing for his vocal jazz ensemble, Audio Radiance. As a member of the Grammy-nominated P.M. Singers, he shared the bill with artists such as Bobby McFerrin, Richie Cole, and Rob McConnell & The Boss Brass. His professional a cappella group Corner Market toured with George Benson. Jason is active throughout the year with vocal jazz clinics across the country.

John Knutson is Director of Choral Studies at Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo, CA. He is also a member of the professional vocal jazz ensemble Vocalogy, formed by Phil Mattson in 1998. John directed the California All-State Vocal Jazz Choir in 2006, and in May 2009 John was named Cuesta College’s Teacher of the Year. His ensembles have performed at the American Choral Directors Association National Convention, the Montreux Jazz Festival, and the International Association for Jazz Education Convention. John holds a Masters in Conducting degree from Northern Arizona University and a Bachelors in Piano Performance from the University of Minnesota, and was both a student at the School for Music Vocations and later a teacher there. *San Jose camp

Cynthia Wahl is a graduate of the University of Regina, holding a Bachelors degree in Music Ed. She later received a diploma in Jazz Studies with a vocal emphasis from Grant MacEwan College in Edmonton. She currently teaches vocal jazz and choir at Daniel McIntyre Collegiate Institute, and directs the jazz choir Wholly Jazz at the Canadian Mennonite University. At DMCI, her jazz choir DMCice has been a featured performer at festivals including Choralfest Manitoba, has opened for Cadence and m-pact, and received a Gold Award at MusicFest Canada. Cynthia performs regularly as a vocalist and a flautist, and adjudicates and guest conducts around Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

Ryan Howe is a graduate of Mansfield University, where he received a B.A. in Vocal Performance. After his time at Mansfield, he studied at Southwestern Community College for a year before joining the faculty in 2009. While studying at at SWCC, Ryan was a member of Audio Radiance and First Take, headlined the Brandon Jazz Festival and shared the stage with the Real Group, M-Pact, and Rajaton. At The School for Music Vocations, Ryan directs the Concert Choir and teaches music theory, recording studio, aural skills, and jazz improvisation. He was Executive Director of SWCC’s 2-day Fox Fest Vocal Jazz Festival. *Creston and Winnipeg camps

Harmonic Convergence is Lucas Mattson’s elite six-member ensemble from The School for Music Vocations. The group sings a variety of musical styles, including jazz, latin, r & b, and a cappella music. Harmonic Convergence performs & tours nationally and internationally, and co-hosts the SMV Vocal Jazz Fest each spring (www.VocalJazzFest.com). At the camps, the ensemble performs and gives demonstrations, coaches solo singing and teaches theory. Credit: 1-3 hours of Undergraduate Credit is available (for an added fee) at the Iowa and San Jose camps through Southwestern Community College. Grad Credit is available at the U.S. camps – contact Dr. Jeremy Fox for info. Accommodations: At the Iowa camp, air-conditioned dorm rooms are available on the campus of Southwestern Community College at a cost of $15 per day, or at nearby motels. At all other camps, the possibility exists for shared accommodations or billeting. If you contact the camp coordinator, every effort will be made to assist. Meals: are available at nearby restaurants, or by “brown bagging.” Rideshares will be available by responsible adults.

The Creston & San Jose camps begin with registration the first day at 8:30 AM – opening session promptly at 9:15. The Winnipeg camps begins with registration at 1:00 PM on the first day.

Each camp concludes with a Final Concert on Friday at 7:00 P.M. which is open to the public.

More about the SMV Vocal Jazz Camp… 1. Enrollment is limited to the first 45 participants, on a first-come first-served basis – so early registration is encouraged. All registrations will be acknowledged upon receipt.

2. To register, send a $150 deposit with the registration form to the coordinator of the camp. Deposits are refundable up to 30 days before each workshop begins. For the Winnipeg camp, all payments can be in Canadian funds.

3. Music to be studied in depth at the camp, both ensemble and solo charts, will be sent to each participant in advance. Participants should plan to prepare this music before arriving at the camp, which will make possible a higher level artistic experience for everyone.

4. All participants are placed in classes appropriate to their specific level of musical understanding. All levels are welcome from beginner to advanced!
