TheJadeBurnerfromHoneywellUOPCallidus

isthefirstultra-lowNOxtailgasthermaloxidizer

burnerdesignedandbuiltspecificallytodeliver

ultra-lowNOxemissionswithnospecialphysical

oroperationalrequirements.Inmanycases,

incorporatingtheJadeburnerintoathermal

oxidizerresultsinthelowestnitrousoxides(NOx)

andcarbonmonoxide(CO)emissionsathermal

oxidizercanproduce.

Thepurposeofathermaloxidizeristocombust

(oxidize)variousorganicorinorganiccompounds

fromotherprocessingunits.Wastestreamsmay

becomprisedofacombinationofmaterials.

Tailgasfromasulfurrecoveryunit,fluegasfrom

anFCCunit,andsimilarlowcalorificcontent

wastegasstreamsareusuallycomprisedof

largeproportionsofinertconstituentssuchas:

nitrogen,carbondioxideandwatervapor.Alow

calorificvaluegasstreamcanbeusedtolowera

burner’sflametemperaturebymixingthewaste

gasstreamwithaportionofthefuelgas(staged

gas)priortocombustion.

Loweringtheburner’sflametemperatureand

“inserting”thefuelstreamreducesoverall

NOxemissions.

Introducing Balanced Staging TheJadeburnerusespatentpendingbalanced

stagingtoreduceoreliminatemanyofthe

limitationsofprevioustechnologies.While

othershaveconsideredvariousmethodsand

locationsofwasteorfuelgasstaging,theJade’s

balancedstagingutilizesacombinationofthese

tooptimizecombustionandloweremissions.

TheJadeburnersplitsthewastegasstreaminto

twoportions,deliveringthegasinanannulargas

attheperipheryoftheburnerandthroughthe

centeroftheburner.

Byinjectingaportionofthewastegasintothe

throatoftheburnerandpremixingitwiththe

combustionair,theJadeeffectivelyreducesthe

oxidationofnitrogeninallprincipalNOxforming

mechanisms:thermal,promptandfuel.This

methodoftailgasstagingislargelyuniquetothe

Jade.TheJadeburneralsostagestheassistfuel

tocreateprimaryandsecondaryflamezones.

AnothercharacteristicoftheJade’sbalanced

stagingisthecustomizedpositioningofthe

stagedfuelgastipsrelativetothecentral

airstreamandtheouterwastegasstream.

Thestagedtipsmaybeplacedanywhere,

fromoutsidetheburnerwithintheoncoming

externallystagedwastegasstreamtoinsidethe

burnerwithintheinternalcombustionairstream.

Thedesignistunedtoeachcustomer’sspecific

requirements.TheJadeburnerminimizesNOx

emissionswithoutcausingincreasedemissions

ofCO,UBHCorVOC.TheJadeisfactory-setby

Callidusanddoesnotneedfieldadjustmentor

specialoperatingpractices.

TheJadeburnerincorporatesalobedgastip

tointroducethewastestreamintothecentral

airstreamandtooptimizerapidmixingand

emissionsreduction.Asimplergastipdesign

canbeusedwhenslowermixingisdesired.

Variationsofthesedesignsareconsideredwhen

optimizingthetipforspecificcases.Mixingrates

andmeansofachievingthoseratesarecustom

designconsiderationsthatarecriticaltoproper

performance.Whileburnersnottunedbythis

strictdesigncriteriamayfunction,theyarelikely

notoptimalforagivenwastegascomposition,

flowrateandtemperature.

Bybeingspecificallydesignedforthermaloxidizer

service,theJadeavoidspotentialpitfallsofusing

burnerdesignsintendedforotherservicesin

thermaloxidizers.Onepotentialpitfallisthat

whilewastegascanbelowincalorificvalue,itis

notfluegas.Burnersthatrelysolelyonhighlevels

offluegasrecirculationmaydeliververylowNOx

whenawastegassuchastailgasissubstituted

forfluegas.However,thesameburnersmay

produceexcessCO,UBHCorVOCemissions

unlesstheresidencetime(sizeofthecombustor)

isgreatlyincreased–anoutcomepredictedby

simulationandconfirmedbytherigorousJade

testingprogram.InordertocontroltheCO,UBHC

andVOCemissionsfrommisappliedburners

inthermaloxidizerservice,itmaybenecessary

tomodifytheburnerinwaysthatdiminishthe

burner’slowNOxperformance.

TheJadedesignaddressestheselimitations

throughthetechnicalinnovationsofbalanced

stagingandlobedmixing.AJadeburnerperforms

inastableandrobustmanneroverthebroadest

rangeofoperatingconditionsandefficientlyat

lowexcessairlevels.
