Key into Advising….Unlock your Potential!

Academic advisement is an essential component to the success of your educational experience at

California State University Channel Islands (CSUCI).

Informed academic advising is critical to your success as a student. A cooperative student/advisor relationship allows you to select an academic program and the ap-propriate curriculum to best serve your individual needs and talents.

Academic Advisement is much more than selecting courses for your next semester. Effective academic advisement includes meeting with an advisor and devel-oping an academic program of study that meets your educational and career goals.

When and how often should I meet with an advisor?

Academic advising is a continuous process that supports

you throughout your time at the University. You are

encouraged to make contact early and maintain regular

contact with academic advisors.

Advisors are available to assist you with a variety

of advising issues. Each student is unique and the

advising center staff strive to develop advising ses-

sions that meet the needs of each individual student.

Seek out assistance whenever needed. Walk-in and

scheduled appointments (recommended) are avail-

able throughout the academic year. Refer to the fol-

lowing guide that describes services available.

What types of advising services are available at the Advising Center?

The following will serve as a guide to advising issues gen-

erally discussed in one hour advising appointments. To

streamline the advising process, ask for these services by name:

Student Advising Review (STAR) — You are encouraged

to make a one-on-one appointment sometime during

your first semester. This appointment will provide the

framework for your educational plan. You will:

have an opportunity to get to know your advisor

review all graduation requirements

set some short and long term academic goals

Degree Progress Update — After you have completed

your STAR appointment you are encouraged to continue

to meet with advisors on a regular basis. Advisors will

continue to monitor your progress and to assist you with

any academic concerns.

Exploring Majors — Not sure which major to choose?

During this session, advisors will provide you with infor-

mation and resources to help guide you along the path

of selecting a major.

Academic Probation/Disqualification — Students on

academic probation are required to meet with an advisor

prior to registering for any new semester. Advisors can

assist you with developing an action plan designed to

help you return to good academic standing.

Grad Pak — Schedule a preliminary graduation evalu-

ation with an academic advisor approximately two se-

mesters prior to your anticipated graduation date. Your

advisor will complete a preliminary graduation evalua-

tion of all of your remaining courses needed to graduate.

Many advising issues and concerns can be handled in

shorter 15—30 minute appointments.

Express Appointments:

Drop/Add questions

Assistance with various forms such as: Extra Unit

Authorization and Change of Major

Assistance with completing academic petitions or

course substitution forms

Selection of courses for next semester

Grad Pak Update—(GRAD PAK completed

previously) quick questions regarding clarification

of remaining graduation requirements; change of

graduation date or final plan

Clarification of University policies and procedures

CSUCI on-line report clarification
