Highland Park United Methodist Church August 20, 2017 9 AM Connection Welcome to Highland Park. Whoever you are, wherever you are, whatever is going on in your life, you are welcome here and loved by God and God’s people! We are excited you came to worship with us this morning. For those who have little ones, our nursery is available and any usher will be glad to point you in the right direction. The mission of Highland Park United Methodist Church is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. On July 12, 1957 a brave group of Christians met with the Rev. James Trammell, District Superintendent of the Lake City District to discuss and pray about start- ing a church on Second Loop Road. A little more than four and half acres of prime farmland was sold by the Lazar family for $10,000 to begin the new church. The Rev. George Fields was appointed pastor of this church-to-be, and he began meeting with people, praying and working with them to start this new ministry. The first service was held August 11, 1957, and Highland Park was chartered two weeks later on August 25. There are still five members of High- land Park who were there that day- William Lancaster (who lives in Charlotte), Margaret Shirlaw, Lib Dickens, Clyde Nance, and Billy Jarrell (who was confirmed on that day). Services were held at Briggs Elementary, and later at Delmae Ele- mentary Schools. The first church building was completed in May 1959. Addi- tional educational facilities were built in 1961 and 1969, and the current sanctu- ary was built in 1994. There are many ways of looking at the history of Highland Park United Method- ist Church. One is to look at it through its record of serving others in the name of Christ. Jesus said, “By this will all people know that you are my disciples- that you love one another.” (John 13:35) He also said, “Whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.” (Matthew 16:25) Highland Park began with reaching out to the community in service. A Boy Scout troop was formed that is still in existence today (one of the oldest in the re- gion). Youth and children’s recreational programs were developed to reach the growing young adult population of the area. The Women’s and Men’s ministries both found ways to be in service to the local community and to the world around us. Highland Park became involved in the Pee Dee Regional Nutrition program, started a clothes closet for needy children, helped initiate a crisis home for battered families, and became one of the founding churches of Light- house Ministries. Through the years it has sent hundreds of youth and adults to serve in Salke- hatchie Summer Service Camps, sent mission teams to Central America and Af- rica, and been the center of relief for those in the Pee Dee affected by the hurri- canes and floodings. Highland Park helped start the Parking Lot Ministry, started the area’s only ministry to homeless families- Family Promise- and became a partner with Mercy Medicine Clinic, a free medical clinic for those in need. High- land Park has become one of the leading churches in supporting Epworth Chil- dren’s Home. Though our “Hands and Feet of Christ” ministries, we have part- nered with dozens of agencies in the area to help God’s children in need. Perhaps the most telling part of this story is that, because of our commitment to following Christ and being his hands and feet, each year we have the joy of welcoming dozens of new believers as they have come to faith by joining us as we answer the first call of Jesus, “Follow me.” We do not know exactly where Jesus will lead us in the future. But wherever he leads, we will follow. We are Highland Park. We are the hands and feet of Jesus. Diamond Anniversary Celebration Highland Park celebrates its Diamond Anniversary today! We officially chartered on August 25, 1957. There are five charter members still with us today- Lib Dickens, Margaret Shirlaw, Clyde Nance, William Lancaster (who lives in Charlotte), and Billy Jarrell (who was our first confirmand- confirmed on that day!). We are celebrating 60 years of loving God and serving others in Christ’s name. We have a display of photos and mementos from the last six decades in the narthex. We encourage families to make a “Diamond Anniversary” donation of at least $60 per family above and beyond our regular giving. These funds will go towards our future building and ministry plans. EPWORTH IS OUR MINISTRY! Where do children go when DSS has taken them from their families because of abuse or neglect? What about when a mother is struggling with addiction and is neglecting her children? Last year 181 of these children found refuge in the ministry we share as United Methodists in SC. Epworth Children’s Home has been welcoming children in Christ’s name for 120 years through the generous support of churches like ours! We will participate in the annual Work Day Offering on Sunday, September 10th, to benefit the children who call Epworth home. Please be in prayerful consideration of what God is calling you to give to this valuable and life changing ministry. For more information about Epworth Children’s Home, you can visit them on the web at www.epworthchildrenshome.org or find them on Facebook.
