29th Annual Law Enforcement

Torch Run Phoenix Police Depart-

ment;

The mission of the Arizona Law

Enforcement Torch Run is to

raise funds and awareness for

Special Olympics Ar izona

statewide. We carry the Torch

representing the Flame of Hope

and dedicate ourselves to helping

Special Olympics Ar izona

throughout the state.

Special thanks to all department

employees who helped make the

Phoenix Police Department’s

participation in the Law Enforce-

ment Torch Run a huge success.

All precincts and bureaus were

well represented as we ran in

three separate “legs” of the Law

Enforcement Torch Run which

originated simultaneously in

Kingman, Page and Yuma. Cac-

tus Park Precinct coordinated a

“bike run” with some participants

biking in from as far away as

Morristown. In Wittmann

Phoenix PD and Maricopa County employees share

the 11 mile leg. They jointly hand the “torch of

hope” to Surprise PD. As has happened in the past,

Phoenix Police Office Dave Tovar handed the torch

to his brother Surprise Police Officer Chris Tovar.

This year’s Torch participants ran/biked on Thurs-

day. On Friday the opening ceremony started down-

town at Wesley Bolin Plaza. Runners carried the

“Torch of Hope” into the main sports arena at Grand

Canyon University to a very jubilant and enthusiastic

crowd. The competition was scheduled to be week-

long where athletes compete in a variety of events.

Cinnabar Block Watch Places Flags in Every Yard

The Memorial Day weekend

marked the first of an annual

event for the Cinnabar Neigh-

borhood community. Every one

of the residents decided to

place full size flags in their front

yards. Members gathered to

install 100 in-ground placement

anchors and fabricated flag

poles with full size American

flags, to be placed on Memorial

Day.

At 4:15 in the morning on Me-

morial Day, approximately 25

residents assembled for the

hour long placement by walking

around putting flags in every

yard. The idea was born from

Block Watch President Trish

Brewer’s two sons. They are

both serving in the US Army and

came up with the idea. Trish

reached out to her community

and organized the program,

gaining both financial support

and manpower from each of

her neighbors in the Cinnabar

neighborhood.

She then invited all the news

channels to attend the event,

most of which arrived and aired

the event on their respective

news programs.

Trish said she wanted to show

the community, especially the

children, what Memorial Day was

all about, and at the same time,

bring the community together-

this could not have been a better

way. The flags were taken down

at dusk, folded and stored.

There are plans to place them

during the Independence Day

celebration as well.

“Movie in the Park” on three separate nights

Friday nights, at 7 p.m.

On April 26th, The

active members of the

Phoenix Neighborhood

Patrol were honored

for donating their time, and for being “Eyes and Ears”, patrolling their own

neighborhoods. The annual event was held at the North Hills Church in

Phoenix. Assistant Chief Joseph Yahner praised the members for their

hard work and diligent accomplishments during 2013. The Explorer Honor

Guard conducted opening ceremonies for the 220 guests. The precinct

PNP coordinators, along with resource squad members from various pre-

cincts, served up a Bar-B-Q buffet style lunch with cake and whipped

cream for dessert.

Cactus Park Precinct Indoor Range Gets a Face Lift

Officers assigned to the Cactus Park Precinct donated their time and

effort to paint and make improvements to the indoor range used for

quarterly fire-arms and tactical confrontation training. Range master

qualified officers can alter the lighting and instruct the trainee in a

safe and controlled environment. Each precinct has their own onsite

indoor range.

Are you afraid to step into a plane and fly? Do you know someone who’s afraid to fly? Fear no more. Phoenix Sky Harbor has teamed up

with Captain Ron Nielson to offer free classes aimed at conquering the fear of flying. The classes are held almost every month at Ameri-

ca’s Friendliest Airport.

Registration for the two-and-a-half hour classes is easy. Simply go to www.fearlessflight.com and sign up for the class that is most conven-

ient for you. Captain Ron has been teaching the class for 26 years; he knows a thing or two about flying, having been a commercial airline

pilot for more than 40 years. He says there are two principal reasons why people have a fear of flying: a) they hate the feeling of being

“trapped,” and b) they can’t shake their catastrophic thought of believing that something “bad” is going to happen with their plane.

“Your odds of dying in a plane crash are 1 in 23 million,” says Captain Ron. “Today, your odds of becoming president are 1 in 22 million,

so you actually have a better chance of being elected president than experiencing something bad in a plane.” The retired pilot says he

encourages his students to bring their spouse or friend to the class, if that makes them more comfortable about attending his classes.

The next classes are listed below.
