In 2018, the CA Women’s Committee of ICAP took the initiative of publishing a directory of women members in order to encourage and highlight talent of female chartered accountants in leadership roles by virtue of their eligibility as independent directors on the Boards of public interest entities. Thus, CA Women Directory of Eligible Independent Directors came into being.

This Directory was aimed to benefit the entire corporate sector in Pakistan to select professional women for leadership positions and will save quality time and resources.

This year, the Directory features a total of 61 of members come from diverse backgrounds with rich experience in financial services, textiles, hospitality, audit and assurance, academia and training or health services. The Directory is going to greatly benefit the companies by providing them a pool of highly competent and experienced professionals to select the independent director for their boards.

The Directory has two sections as follows:

• Section A presents the profiles of senior female chartered accountants with atleast 5years of membership who have given their consent to be nominated on the boards of listed companies.

• Section B presents the names of all female chartered accountants who have 5 years of ICAP membership. Such females can be contacted through the CA Women Committee, if needed.

The Third Edition of the CA Women Directory will be available on www.icapcawc.com. The Directory will be continuously updated and the profiles of more women CAs fulfilling the experience criterion will be added in the future editions.

It is truly commendable that CA Women’s Committee has undertaken this initiative of compiling an independent Directory of CA Women. The compilation of such a Directory was much needed to support listed companies in nominating independent women directors on their boards. It is also a testimony of Institute’s commitment to public interest.

The CA profession is marked with achievements and legacies of many outstanding CA women who have served at C-suite positions in their organisations due to their brilliance and continuous hard work. The pool of such talented professionals provides a distinct opportunity to organisations to get true benefit of gender diversity on their boards in public interest.

I would like to congratulate the CA Women’s Committee on the publication of the Directory, which has been managed in a very short time. This initiative will help our CA Women to prove their potential and leadership capabilities on corporate boards. Research shows that companies with at least one female director on their boards have better financial performance. An aspect to be looked at, is the influence of "female economy". According to a study commissioned by the Global Banking Alliance for Women, and supported by McKinsey & Co., women as a population segment could be called the "biggest emerging market" in the world, surpassing India and China combined. In the U.S., women comprise about half of the workforce, hold half of all management positions, and account for 10 million majority-owned, privately-held firms.

It is because of the above critical positions held by women in an economy that most of the developed and developing countries alike are emphasizing on increasing the participation of women in corporate leadership positions. The CA Women Committee strongly believes in gender parity and diversification that brings value in organizational as well as social context.

The CA Women Directory is an initiative to showcase eligibility and professional achievements of CA Women to the corporate world. It aims to achieve enhanced gender balance through government policy recalibration, raise awareness and expand the discussion on board diversity to ensure that more companies attract and retain experienced and qualified women to serve on their boards. We hope with this initiative; our female members will get the opportunity to be in corporate board rooms of listed companies thereby shaping gender balanced leadership into prominence across the country.

I am highly grateful to the Chairman, the Board & management of Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) for launching of CA Women Directory 2020 at PSX and promoting women inclusion on the Boards of public interest entities listed on the Pakistan Stock Exchange. I extend my heartiest congratulations to The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Pakistan (ICAP), particularly the Chartered Accountants (CA) Women Committee, for launching the CA Women on Board Directory 2020. This directory is a vital source of information listing all qualified women who are Chartered Accountants and can serve as board members on different companies.

The CA Women on Board Directory is an important and useful compilation of all the lady Chartered Accountants who meet or qualify the criteria for independent Directors of companies as outlined by the regulations of the Securities & Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP). These Chartered Accountants have the full potential to be Directors in any company of the corporate, private or public sector of Pakistan.

Society cannot progress economically without the participation of women alongside men in the economic activities. It is imperative that women must come forward and play their due role in society for economic progress. A major reason that the economies of Europe, North America and Japan have progressed tremendously over the last century is not only because of their technological advancements, but also because the women there have participated wholeheartedly in the development & progress of their societies.

PSX, as a frontline regulator, along with the SECP as the apex regulator, advocates the inclusion of women, minorities and the marginalised members of our society in the companies and organisations. This is also in line with the aims, objectives and efforts of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, of which Pakistan is a signatory, as it encourages the participation of women in all economic spheres of society.

I felicitate and commend this step by ICAP as it is right step forward in promoting gender equality.

It gives me immense pleasure to congratulate the CA Women Committee of Institute of Chartered Accountant of Pakistan (ICAP) for taking the initiative of compiling an information repository of qualified women chartered accountants for prospective role on boards of companies. I am optimism that, through their knowledge and experience, these female professionals shall add value and contribute to development of diverse and inclusive boards.

Inclusive leadership and gender parity has taken center stage in sustainable economic development. Companies that recognize and exhibit positive environment, sustainability and governance (ESG) metrics are increasingly drawing interest of international investors. For SECP, since 2002, corporate governance framework remains a priority that required a progressive, inclusive and diverse board encouraging female representation. However, it was in 2017 that SECP provided major impetus by mandating public interest companies to include at least one female director on their respective boards. It would not be out of place to mention here that most recently, by embracing comply or explain approach, boards of listed companies are being held accountable by mandating explicit disclosure, in their report to shareholders, the reason for non-inclusion of female directors. I expect that the regulatory umbrella nurturing female representation shall build the required momentum for diversity in thought, vibrancy in decision making and greater transparency in board rooms.

In a broader prospective, enforcing quota can only act as a catalyst for change. Therefore, inducting qualified professionals in leadership positions and as female directors as a source of growth, competitive advantage and even as an enabler of business strategy shall build a more sustainable business case for companies. I would encourage female professionals already serving on boards to continue to mentor young female professionals aspiring for leadership positions on boards of companies.

I am confident that the launch of “CA Women Directory, 2020”, with the able efforts of CA Women Committee of the ICAP, shall provide companies the needed impetus and access to the talent pool of female professionals eligible to join boardrooms. The initiative of engagement and promotion of female professionals on boards by ICAP is impressive and important to SECP.

I look forward to a promising future of CA women professionals as vibrant and proactive leaders strengthening corporate sector and in alignment with the principles of gender parity across all spheres of economic activities in Pakistan.

It is a pleasure that CA Women Committee is publishing the 3rd edition of CA Women Directory of eligible independent directors in Pakistan.

It is indeed a commendable initiative of the CA Women Committee to develop a directory and database of female Chartered Accountants who identified themselves as “Board Ready” having basic skillsets, prior board experience, areas of interest and contact information.

Diversity on board of directors of a company is critical to sustaining performance. Further in view of the mandatory requirement in the Companies Act 2017 to include at least one female director on the boards of all public interest entities, the directory would be very helpful for the corporate sector to search the prospective independent directors on the boards of listed companies.

I hope listed companies and public interest companies would use this directory to appoint independent directors on their Boards. Qualified Chartered Accountants would be able to contribute at Board level as they have the requisite skill set for the same.

The Code was implemented by Qatari Regulatory Authority and was based on International Best practice. She developed the Code of Corporate Governance for UAE Real Estate Developers. This code is the first code of Corporate Governance developed for Real Estate Developers.She led the process of Dubai Parks and Resorts, winning of 2016 Ethical Board Room Corporate Governance Award, and positioning the Company as the market leader. She ensured that all Corporate Governance related policies and procedures were in place prior to participating in these awards.
