FormanyyearsIhavededicatedmytimetoworkingwithandforneighborhoodandcommunityorganizations.InCincinnati,IservedastheBoardChairmanoftheHomeownershipCenterofGreaterCincinnati–anon-profitagencydedicatedtostrengtheningneighborhoodsthroughavarietyofhomeownershipservices.Ihavealsoservedasavolunteerattorneyforlowincomeclientsindomesticviolenceandconsumerprotectionmatters.InJapanandintheUnitedStates,IhaveservedasareligiouseducationinstructorforGrade4and5students.Myfavoritehobbyisrunningandracing,butIalsoenjoycookingandeating.IamhappytobeanewmemberoftheBoardofTrusteesandamveryexcitedaboutservingourschoolcommunityinthiscapacity.Matthew Fitzpatrick

IreceivedaB.S.degreeinsociologyfromBrandeisUniversityinBoston,Massachusettes.IamfluentinJapanese,KoreanandEnglish.Iworkwithmyfamily’srealestatecompanyinJapanandKorea.IalsoserveasavolunteermemberofShinhanBank.

CA Welcomes Eighteenth Head of School: David J. CondonIampleasedtohavethisopportunitytotellyoualittleaboutmyselfandmyvisionforCA’sfuture.OriginallyfromGreenBay,Wisconsin,IfirstmovedtoAsiain1982asanexchangestudentattheChineseUniversityofHongKong,whereIstudiedChinesephilosophyandliterature.AftergraduatingsummacumlaudewithadegreeinEnglishliteraturefromtheUniversityofMinnesota,Iembarkedonacareerineducation,teachingandworkingasanadministratorinsuchplacesasTaiwan,Florida,theNetherlands,MyanmarandHongKong.MostrecentlyIservedastheHeadofSchoolatHongKongInternationalSchool.IconsideritanhonortojointheCanadianAcademycommunityastheschool’snewheadmaster.

CurrentlyIamfinishingaDoctorateinEducationalPolicyandAdministrationattheUniversityofMinnesota.Mydissertationfocusesoninternationalschoolcommunitymembers’interpretationsoftheconceptofinternational-mindednessandwhatinternationalschoolsdotopromoteit.

Mywife,Catherine,andIhavethreegrownchildren.Catherineisateacherandanaccomplishedartist.Ourdaughter,Anya,isagraduatestudentatBrownUniversity.Ourson,Louis,recentlyservedinthePeaceCorpsinGansuProvince,China,andisnowinlawschoolattheUniversityofWisconsin-Madisonwhilehistwinbrother,Miles,isadoctoralstudentinpsychologyatTexasTech.Anavidfitnessswimmer,bicyclist,readerandreflectivejournaler,IenjoyspendingmysummersatourhomeonLowerClearLakeinnorthcentralWisconsin.

ClosertohomehereonRokkoIsland,IbelieveeveryoneisawarethatJapan,liketherestoftheworld,faceseconomicchallenges.Oneofourimmediategoals,therefore,hastobeensuringthelong-termfinancialhealthoftheschool.Consequently,inthemonthstocome,Iwillbesolicitingideasonhowwecangainoperationalefficiencies,explorepotentialnewrevenuestreams,andpromoteourschooladvancementwork,

includingfund-raising. Beyondthesemoreimmediateconcerns,Iwouldliketo

devotemyattentiontoCanadianAcademybeingknownas“apremierinternationalschoollearningcommunitydevotedtoinnovation,excellence,andthetransformativegrowthofallitsmembers.”Thisstatementarticulatesmyvisionofanidealschool—aninclusivelearningorganizationthatisabletotakereasonablerisksandlearnfromitsownexperiencesinordertoachieveoutstandingstudentlearningresults.Alongtheway,allcommunitystakeholders,notjuststudents,willbenefitfromtheirassociationwiththeschool.

Inthemonthstocome,IlookforwardtoservingtheCAcommunityandgettingtoknowitsmembers.Workingtogether,wecanhelpeachstudentrealizehisorherfullestpotentialwhileexperiencingthejoyoflearning.Nowthatisexciting!

Challenging experiences are opportunities for learning and growth

byNobuyaTsubosaka(CAFaculty2006-2010)Aroundfouro’clockinthemorningonMay26th,Iwaspassingthe8600meterpointonmywayupMt.Everest.Ihadspent15hourswalkingwithoutanysleeptogettothispoint.Theweatherconditionswereterrible.Astrongwindcameupandmademyfingersnumb.Snowblockedmyvisibility.MySherpaindicatedthatthetemperaturewasaround-50Cdegrees.FivepartiesincludingmypartyweretryingtoreachthetopofMt.Everestonthatday.Fourofthepartieshadgivenupanddescendedearlyduetotheriskyconditions.ThiswasmysecondattemptonMt.Everest’speakinmy40dayexpedition.ThefirstattemptwaspreventedbyaragingstormaweekearlierandthemonsoonseasonwasabouttoarriveintheHimalayas.Therefore,thisattackbecamemylastchancetoreachEverest’speak.ThisseasontheHimalayashadunusualweather.Toomuchsnowgaveclimbersahardtime,andthebadweatherstoppedthemmovingaheadseveraltimes.Itwasalmostimpossibletopredicttheweather.

TheusualrouteupMt.Everestwasnottechnicallyhardforme.Visiblecrevassesandicefallsinaglacierwerepredictable.However,atthealtitudeof8000metersandbeyond,theeffectofthethinoxygensupplyuponmewasverysevere.Thedensityofoxygenover8000metersisonlyone-thirdofgroundlevel.Isufferedfromdiarrheaandconstantcoughing.Thismountainshowednomercy.First,oneofmyyaksfellintoacrevasse.Thentheleaderinmypartylefttheclimbbecauseofaleginjury,andanothermemberpulledoutbecauseofexhaustion.Afterthat,oneoftheSherpaslosthissight.Isawdeadbodieslyingonthegroundalongthetrail.AfamousJapaneseclimberandtwootherEuropeanclimberswhohadreachedthesame8000metermarkhaddiedduetohypothermiaandaltitudesickness.ItwasclearthatIwasdefinitelyinadeathzone.“Imaydie.”Thisthoughtcrossedmymindmanytimes.

At8750metersinablizzard,IlookeduptothetopofMt.Everestat8848meters.Itwasonly100metersawayvertically.However,theweatherconditionsworsened.Thewindbecametoopowerfulanddangeroustocontinuetheclimb.Ithadenough

powertoblowmeofftheridge.Besides,partofmyfacehadquicklyturnedblack,andeveryonewasfightingagainstthecoldandterrifiedatthefearoffrostbite.Iwaitedforanhourforthewindtostop,butitneverdid.Ihadenoughenergyleft,andeveryoneinmypartywaskeentocontinuetothepeak.Yet,weknewthatwecouldlosepartsofourbodyduetofrostbite,andsomeofuscoulddiefromhypothermiaifwecontinued.Therefore,Imadethebigdecisiontodescend.Itwasahard,butcrucialdecision.IknewIwasstillphysicallyandmentally

fit,butIbelievethatitwastherightdecisionforeveryone.

OnthewaytoCamp3Istoppedandlookedattheviewbeneathmyfeet.Itwasjustspectacular.Thecloudsweredriftingupthegrandvalleyofice.IfeltlikeIwasstandingonacloud.

Unfortunately,IcouldnotreachthepeakofMt.Everest.However,Iwasfortunatetohaveagreatexperienceunderextremeconditionsandinnerfear.Thisexperiencedefinitelyexpandedmycapacityformountainclimbing,andIamsurethatitwillhelpmewhenIattemptmynextchallenge.Finally,IwouldliketothanktheCA

staff,studentsandparentsfortheirencouragement.Itgeneratedanenormousamountofextraenergyandstrongmotivationundertheextremeconditionsonthemountain,andIlearnedthatIwassupportedbymanypeoplealthoughIclimbedbymyself.TomakethisattemptonMt.Everest,IhadtoleaveCA.ItwasthehardestdecisionIhadevermade.However,thejourneyIamnowonwillmakemeamoreinterestingperson.

whenIstudiedpipeorganonesummerwithGeorgeKresel.HehadcomehometoRensselaerfromvacationatDePauwUniversityinGreencastle,IndianawherehewascompletingaMasterofMusicdegree.ThisledtoourmarriageatDepauwUniversityonMarch14,1953.WereceivedscholarshipmoneyforcontinuedstudyatButlerUniversityin1956.GeorgereceivedaBachelorofDivinity,andIcompletedcoursesforanelementaryschoolteachinglicensethatprovidedyearlyclassroomemploymentforme.WethenmovedtoBostonUniversity

forGeorge’sstudywherehereceivedhisDoctorateofTheologyin1961.Hisfirstteachingpositionasaprofessorwasat

GeorgeandIretiredfromemploymentinJapanin1997andreturnedtoMorocco.Weboughtanoldhousethathadbelongedtohisancestors.ToaccommodatethetwoantiqueorgansGeorgewantedtopurchase,hehadonelargeroomaddedtothehouse.HeimmediatelybecamethelocalUnitedMethodistChurch’sorganistandalsoassistedatthetownfuneralhomeasorganist.Iworkedwiththechurch’sSundaySchoolclassesforchildren.Webothwereenjoyingbeingapartofthecommunity.Currently,IhavememoriesofGeorge

playingthosetwoorgansinourMoroccohome,evenwhenhewasveryill.HepassedawayonNovember5,2004,havingbeenillforanumberofyears,yetwasleadinganexemplarylifeandhadabrilliantmindtotheveryend.HisfuneralwasattheLangFuneralHome,nowtheSteinkeFuneralHome,inMoroccowithintermentatRussellChapelCemetery.InApril2006,Isoldtheoldhouse

andheldanauctionofthecontents.TheSteinkeFuneralHomesofMoroccoandRensselaerpurchasedthetwoorgans.Oneofwhichdatedbackto1899.ThefuneralhomealsohasaframedphotoofGeorgeabovetheorgancabinetwaitingasiftoplayitforyou.

AlanRichardKawasjeewascalledbyGodonApril3,2011.Hepassedawayinthearmsofhislovingwife,Masako,andhisdaughter,Janette.

HiswakeandfuneralserviceswereheldinAshiyaattheCatholicChurch,bothwerebrilliantsunnydayswiththefullbloomofcherryblossoms.

Thechapelwasfilledwithwarmth,loveandfriendship.SurroundingAlanwereflowersandthespiritsoftheattendantsthatgatheredtoshareunforgettablememories.

Alanhadbeenoneofthegood-oldtimersofKobe,andheusedtobeanactivememberoftheKobeClubandtheKobeRegattaandAthleticClub(KR&AC)inhisyouth,justashisparentshadbeen.AnincredibleathleteonthesportsgroundofCA,hewasknownforhismiraculous“dunkshot”onthevarsitybasketballteam.Also,asfarasweremember,hestillholdstherecordforhighjump.

AftergraduatingfromtheUniversityofMichiganandlivingafewyearsinNewYork,AlanservedinthemilitaryasanMP.HethenworkedfortheFordMotorCompanyformanyyears,bothinTokyoandKobe.Laterinlife,heenjoyedworkingasatechnicalwriterforanelectriccompany.

Onaprivatenotehelovedjazz,especiallythesoundofGlennMillerandNatKingCole.Infact,hecarriedandtreasuredthewholecollectionofNatKingCole’srecords.Get your kicks on Route 66wasalwayshisfavoritelullaby,andsoitwasours!

Hewasamanofdignity,reverence,andcharm;someonewhotaughtusthatwewereborntoloveandtobeloved.We

cherishhimforhisgentleness,pureheartedness,andthesenseofhumorthatalwaysbroughtlaughtertothosearoundhim.Wemisshimsomuchforhissweetsmiles,hugs,andkisses.

WeraiseatoasttoAlan’s90yearsofhiswonderfullifefilledwithsmiles,laughter,tears,andaboveall,LOVE.

Wewillneverforgetthededicationandcommitmenthehadmadethroughouthislife,andhewillberememberedwithloveandrespectbyallwhoseliveshetouched.

ThesoundofRawhideweplayedattheservicesstilllingersinourhearts.

Frances Jo Bishop (1915-2009)CA 1954-1964

Edmonton,Alberta,CanadawasthesiteofasmallCanadianAcademyreunionasseveralformerteachersandalumnigatheredtopaytheirlastrespectstoJoBishop,wifeofformerCAprincipalDougBishop(CAFaculty1954-1964).ShepassedawayonDecember9,2009,butbecauseoftheextremelycoldweatheratthetime,itwasdecidedthattherewouldbeamemorialserviceonJune19,2010,onwhatwouldhavebeenher95thbirthday.Forthatreason,formerCAfriendswereabletoattendandtoreminisce.

Jowasa“peopleperson”allofherlife,whichwasdemonstratedoftenatCAassheentertainedtheteachers.Shetookmanyofthenewteachersunderhermotheringwingtohelpthemadjusttotheirnewcircumstances.WhenGeorgeSamuelgotmarriedin1960,JoandDougwereveryhappytorepresentSaku’sparents.

Alwaysreadytohelpout,whilethenewgirl’sdormwasbeingbuiltJowillinglytookintoherhomesomeofthegirlsandevenayoungerboywhowasextremelyhomesick.Asalvecreatedinthelate1800sbyhergrandfatherwassuccessfulinhelpingsomeboysinthedormbyhealingwoundsandboilsthatshewouldlance.Shehelpedoutonanotheroccasionwhenthegrade12classneededacoupleofextrasintheirdrama The Henpecked Husband.JoandMaryMiharafilledinquitewellandbroughtthehousedownwiththeirperformanceastwooldbusybodies.

Jo’sdeathattheageof94wasacompletesurprisetoherfamilyassheappearedtobeinmarveloushealthandcontinuedtodrivehercar!Shehadalongandwonderfullife,alwaysenjoyingmakingnewfriendsandkeepingtrackofthoseshehadmadeovertheyears.
